Great WWII Movies.

My wife and I just finished "Band of Brothers" and "Guns of Navarone". Two WWII movies which we both enjoyed very much. Please post any recommendations that any of you have for more movies of the same ilk. Many thanks!

Come on you guys, I would expect that The Sands of Iwojima would be listed earlier. This is the all time best war film and should be required viewing of all Americans. A few years ago I rented every WWII video that I could find and this one starring John Wayne stands out to me. The final scene is tearjerker. It will make your pride in America soar.

The movie refered to in post #39 is "The Final Cowntdown" which I thought was a really cool movie. If you can find it try "Firebase Gloria". It's a 'Nam movie starring the same guy who played the Drill Sergeant in "Full Metal Jacket". There's also a movie about some old British Spec. Ops. guys who take on one last mission into Africa starring Roger Moore. I can't thimk of the title but it's a good one. Anyone know that one? FReepmail me.

If your dad was doing convoy duty in WWII then I would highly recommend Action in the North Atlantic Also on the lidt would be Victory at Sea, The enemy below, and Sink the Bismark

If you want some additional movies that are excellent for the Pacific theater some would include The Valiant hours, Run Silent Run Deep, Midway, Guadalcnal Diary, Task Force, In Love and War, Sands of Iwo Jima, Bataan, Back to Bataan and They were Expendable

There are many others.

"Das Boot" Ah yes, good call. One of my all time favorites. It's been so long since I have seen it, it might be new all over again. Has to be the subtitled version though. I remember looking for it a few years ago at blockbuster, and all they had was the dubbed version. I didn't waste my time on that. It is a great movie -- maybe I can find it in DVD.---------

I would also strongly recommend The Valiant Hours for the same category as The Longest Day and Patton

It is about William F. halsey in the Solomon Islands campaign. One small part of his tenure as an admiral in charge of major American operations when we could have still lost the war in the pacific.

I read an article the other day saying the movie " 12 Oclock High" was probably the best movie ever made of the 8th Air Forch.

If you can, try to get and watch a movie named Objective Burma with Errol Flynn. I have been in foreign jungles during wartime. The ONLY movie I have ever seen that could actually portray jungle warfare, the desperation and the desire to overcome all and succeed. There is one particular scene where all seems to be lost. He hangs his head and has given up. But somehow he raises his head, makes his company get up and carry on. That one scene did it for me.

Battleground is severely underrated...I watch that tape about twice a year and just marvel at the way they captured the life of an infantry squad. The recent Band of Brothers series was excellent in that regard, too. Hmmmm. They were both about the 101st.

The book Enemy at the Gates was great. Unlike the movie it details the entire battle of Stalingrad. Lots of different points of view.

The Desert Fox (James Mason as Rommel), its sequel, The Desert Rats (the 9th Aussies stand tall at Tobruk), and Victory at Sea (the dramatic documentary of war in the Pacific with often riveting battle footage and a memorable original soundtrack.) Oh, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
