A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day - Weekend....12-21,22-02

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

To Our FReeper FRiends: We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our spotlight on various FReepers. We thought we'd kick back on the weekends and simply review those who've been featured during the week. If you missed seeing them and want to say hello to them now, feel free to click on the link to that particular thread. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today and tomorrow, please feel free to do that also. One of us will always be around to see the welcome mat is still out, and maybe even put fresh flowers on the table. :)

If your husband requests broccoli casserole, it must really be great! What a compliment! My mom makes the bests fresh broccoli salad with crunchy bacon, diced onions, raisins and a light sweet mayonnaise dressing. Amazing how people love their vegetables! LOL

Mama_Bear you were on Guam? My father was there during WWII fighting for freedom as a U.S. Marine in the 40's. I went over there during "the bust" in the 80's from Alaska. Lived up above Tumon Bay and tourrist row. Used to walk up from Tahiti Rama'a to the condo. What a cool little place in the Pacific for a working vacation. Spent over six months there, and had a great time - even learned what deer tastes like from up by Anderson!

Your Moms recipe sounds delicious.
Actually one of the Fireman told him that I need to make the brocolli casserole. I usually make the sweet potato casserole but I guess I'll make my Aunt Louise's famous brocolli casserole this time which I've never made before.
Here's the recipe:

Broccoli Casserole
cook 2 packs chopped broccoli
2 beaten eggs
1/4 cup onion chopped fine
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup mayo
1 cup grated cheddar cheese

Drain cooked broccoli, salt and pepper. Mix all ingredients. Put grated cheddar cheese on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes uncovered.

Another "quake survivor"! We were in Anchorage out at Sand Lake during the earthquake. We were sitting in cardboard boxes watching XL-5 or the Flintstones when the TV went off and Mom grabbed us and said "kids let's get out of her!" Five minutes of watching tree tops try to touch the ground and saucer eyed - it finally quit.

I remember it like it was yesterday, WOW!

Quite tolerable, Amy, thanks.

Sunshine and 55 degrees, headed for 65 today.

In this westerly section of South Carolina (40 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia), we miss nearly all the weather extremes, and I already have some Spring bulbs leafing up!
The delicate white flowers emerge in late January-early February, before the daffodils.

Thanks for the ping to the Fairbanks Camera.

We visited only the southern coast area of Alaska....Sitka, Juneau & Glacier Bay....hope to return to see more of that magnificant state one day!

Wishing you & yours a Joyous Christmas & Happy New Year!

(I loved this graphic so much...I asked Billie if I could 'borrow' it!)

Mornin' MB. It's 45 degrees and the rain has stopped for the time being up the road from you.

I had to venture out in the rain yesterday and on Thursday night. Brrrr!

Have a good weekend everyone.

My sons were then nearly 9 & 10, playing out in the mounds of snow in the back yard, so they were 'on their own' for the duration.

I can only imagine the jolt you experienced, but I was 300 miles north and the entire house (2-story with basement) was tilting a full 20 degrees in both directions!

AWESOME power !!!

How about the aftershocks, though - worse, because you didn't know if the next one would be a bigger quake?!
The bad part was all our families in the Lower 48 who had no idea how we were affected, communications cut for four days to the area.

I-king, once when I described this on a thread, a fellow who had been at the University of Nebraska at that time related the following:
Said he was, at the time it struck, standing next to their seismograph.
He and his companion were in utter disbelief when the needle suddenly wildly swung from one extreme side of the graph paper to the other.

In Fairbanks, the University records an average of 20 shocks daily, most not felt.
The stronger ones do get your attention - LOL!

Julie, here is how the area being recorded looked in 2001:

And here is the most recent view:

9:41:11 a.m., and it will be another hour before the sun comes out for 3 hours and 45 minutes!
