Poised to make his case tonight in a Special Prime Time Interview with Ed Gordon on Black Entertainment Cable Television [8PM EST]..
Trent Lott (R-MS) is now facing more calls to replace him as Senate Majority Leaderfrom top republicans
Lott's not fighting for his reputation. He's fighting to save his position as SML. If his stand were principled (i.e., "I'm not a racist, and anyone who says so is a malicious liar who must think the American public is stupid....") I'd support him 100%.
But Lott is now a cringing a$$ kissing fool who has destroyed any credibility he had left. Watching his performance over the past week should make it apparent to one and all that he's lower than a racist; he's a whore....
I decided to watch tonights interview on BET and see how he would handle himself. What I saw was a man who completely turned his back on several core conservative issues and it totally floored me. I can not believe that Trent Lott would say on BET that he supports "Affirmative Action" and he would reconsider his support for Judge Pickering. He knows how to argue against Affirmative Action and in his defense he did come to Pickerings defense and said he was a good man and that he would re-consider his appointment but that Pickering is a good man.
Trent Lott lost my support as the ML when he said he supported Affrimative Action. I still believe he played a key role in getting George W. Bush's proposals to become Law and I am grateful to him for that. But his refusal to stand on his principles tonight really dis-apponted me. Maybe I will have a change of heart if he can explain why he said to BET that he supports Affirmative Action I will change my mind, But what I witnessed tonight was not leadership
Lott appears to be playing right into their hands. The Dems smell a blood sacrifice in return for their stinging defeat on November 5th....and Lott seems ready to hand his own head to them on a platter.
Then throw him out over that instead of labeling him a racist(not that YOU did). I agree with you on throwing him out because he is weak. But we need to throw out a few more if that's the case. In fact, where does it stop if we must throw out all the stupid ones?
Yes, I fully understand the analogy.
BUT you missed my conclusion. This is not assisting them by having Lott step down from majority leader. They want his head on a platter (he resigns from senate) or his head on a target (he stays as majority leader). We don't.
This isn't about what James Carville, Maxine Waters, Jesse Jackson, or their ilk think. This is about what Joe Everyman, Next Year's 18-Year-Old Voter, Reagan Democrat, Wishy Washy Moderate, CEO political contributer, et al. thinks about the GOP.
If Lott cares about advancing the conservative agenda, he should do what's best to achieve that. If stepping down from ML is best, so be it. Otherwise he's selfish and cares more about saving his skin (which he's doing a piss-poor job of) than advancing the conservative agenda.
(Hmmm... You and deport both got a worse impression of his performance than I did!)
Most Lott supporters have had to preface their comments with remarks like that around here for the last few days.
You, on the other hand, are ripping and roaring over what you see to be the demise of the Republican leadership.
No, I'm ectatic over the fact tht we can finally get past the Lott era in the Senate. He's been hurting our cause for far too long.
I'm just trying to point out, who you brung to the party, and how helpful to the party, that person has been. As far as I can see, it's not too helpful. But the Keyes camp is great at sniping.
No, you have an axe to grind with Alan Keyes and with me, obviously. But I will stack Alan's contribution to our party up against yours any day.
One thing's for sure, if it had been Alan on that panel on BET tonight, he wouldn't have walked from the studio stripped of all dignity and having betrayed every Republican principle, like Trent Lott did.
In fact, the panelists would have been the whipped puppies, and the viewers would have gotten a full dose of common sense Republican solutions for the problems faced by both black AND white Americans.
Maybe if the Party leadership would embrace Dr. Keyes, as most rank and file Republicans have, instead of stiffarming him, the GOP could start to win some hearts and minds in the minority community.
It'd help if LOTT would zip his lip as well.
Yes,,,and insulting that he thought that he could doubletalk his way through the interview....
That said, there is something more than vaguely oxymoronic about denouncing segregation in a (nominally) segregated venue .
Political Correctness has made it a sin to disagree with affirmative action. Screw affirmative action and the african american term- unless everyone from now on refers to ME as an IRISH AMERICAN. Aftyer watching this interview I am a racist according to the black caucus.
Lott is doomed politically as he was set, baited , and trapped. He is politically finito.
Some people will not accept the truth....ever!
Argh! Make that Lott needs to zip his lip AND stay under the public radar for a few weeks, then come out and refuse to discuss the issue further. Odds on whether he will?
He did that?? .. dumb .. very very dumb move
The affirmative action sounds like he was pandering .. which won't go over to well either ..
Is there going to be a re-airing of this interview .. I wish I had seen it
There very series over their.
