I agree that the scenario you came up with, would have been much better than what he did say.

The fact is, it was a light hearted party for the old man, and not the floor of the Senate. The critical appraisal of the changes in the south would have had no place at a birthday event.

This thing has gotten way too much attention for what it was not.

It was not a endorsement of segregation. A past reality that has been or should be all but forgotten.

Segregation has not been a political issue since the 60s. Lott simply forgot that someone might dredge it up as a issue. That is all there is to it!

Clearly, Trent Lott must go.

 

Two weeks ago Lott was merely feckless and vaguely racially retrograde. Today, thanks to his own stupidity and/or latent racism, he is the Republican white male bigot poster boy for the democrats to whip out at will.

 

BTW, Sean Hannity misses the point when he attempts to justify retaining Lott by pointing to the racial double standard, i.e., clinton honoring the racist, segregationist Democrat, Senator Fulbright...or the leadership role granted by the Democrats to the racist, segregationist, former KKK member, Democrat, Senator Byrd.

 

The racial double standard is relevant only insofar as retaining Lott reinforces it. The double standard is rooted in entrenched perception...and in politics, perception is reality.

 

The immediate problem facing the GOP is that Lott is a liability, not that it is unfair that he is a liability.

 

For the good of the party, for the good of the country, please ask the Senate to replace Trent Lott.

Rove has had good instincts so far, if he thinks Lott is a liability than Trent should be a patriot and let someone else lead. The rest of the GOP Senate should decide, I said that from the get go. My script wasn't critical, and Thurmond is known to bask in such praise. He's disavowed his Dixiecrat past often and for decades. There is no sting there for him.

I agree that Lott is now damaged goods. It would be my preference that he resign on his own and at the time of his choosing. I do not believe he should be insulted and maligned by his own party to do so. This would likely cause him to resign in anger and disgrace. He would then upset the balance of power again in the senate. He would be trapped in a corner and would have no choice, if only to show that he is no man's whipping boy.

I think Lott should just blatently fess up and say he 'is' predjudiced against the black progressive leftist communistic caucus in which the Clinton's have made of the VERY HARD LEFT, democratic party.

This way they have to shut up and then the leftist communists in the media and politics and Hollywood can scream how right winger he is. THEN he is only guilty of being an extremist right winger not a racist. And then with class he can then say that he will 'consult with his fellow republicans, and see if any voting considerations are at hand for the ML role. And make clear he will remain in the senate.

Then the dems will be back in the spotlight (where they belong) as they have NO ISSUES but to bash and call names) and deal with the judicial nominees and other pertinent issues they can no longer try to stop.

I don't think it will help to criticize the black caucus unless there is a issue worth fighting over. Lott respects differences of opinion, so he would be lying if he said what you suggested.
