Oh, but Lott was a team player...Just ask Tiny Tom...

Howlin, the President is the LEADER OF HIS PARTY. I would say he has the right to try to influence the Congressional leadership of hiw own party.
I don't always agree with Bush's choices of personnel, but you've certainly nailed it here. And I hope he does it yesterday.
To: Sabertooth
I agree that the scenario you came up with, would have been much better than what he did say.
The fact is, it was a light hearted party for the old man, and not the floor of the Senate. The critical appraisal of the changes in the south would have had no place at a birthday event.
This thing has gotten way too much attention for what it was not.
It was not a endorsement of segregation. A past reality that has been or should be all but forgotten.
Segregation has not been a political issue since the 60s. Lott simply forgot that someone might dredge it up as a issue. That is all there is to it!

BUMP!
- Dear Pres. Bush,
-
- Clearly, Trent Lott must go.
-
- Two weeks ago Lott was merely feckless and vaguely racially retrograde. Today, thanks to his own stupidity and/or latent racism, he is the Republican white male bigot poster boy for the democrats to whip out at will.
-
- BTW, Sean Hannity misses the point when he attempts to justify retaining Lott by pointing to the racial double standard, i.e., clinton honoring the racist, segregationist Democrat, Senator Fulbright...or the leadership role granted by the Democrats to the racist, segregationist, former KKK member, Democrat, Senator Byrd.
-
- The racial double standard is relevant only insofar as retaining Lott reinforces it. The double standard is rooted in entrenched perception...and in politics, perception is reality.
-
- The immediate problem facing the GOP is that Lott is a liability, not that it is unfair that he is a liability.
-
- For the good of the party, for the good of the country, please ask the Senate to replace Trent Lott.
-
- Thank you.
-
- Sincerely,
-
- Mia T

Also historian should be associated. Rove makes all of his decisions through a historical prism. It's always past, present, future. Just my conclusion from watching and listening to him.

I didn't know Rove was Skull and Bones Society at Yale, don't you have to graduate for that?

here is Jim Robinsons take on the matter.
Who cares? Mostly you have the "party of personal destruction," led by the socialist black caucus stirring the cauldron. Aided and abetted, of course,
by assorted Lott haters of the right
(of which I admit to being one, but do not join in this lynching).
This is a public hate crime in process.

Rove has had good instincts so far, if he thinks Lott is a liability than Trent should be a patriot and let someone else lead. The rest of the GOP Senate should decide, I said that from the get go. It's a lot easier to go along with the GOP senate than it is to kow-tow to Maxine Waters and Jesse Jackson.

Strom's 100th B day Party came AFTER Jefford's departure.
Lott's remarks brought to the present his on going racisim.
LOTT brought it forward a good 20 years all by his lonesome.
To: Kay Soze
The more I look at this statement:
"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either." ~Trent Lott - December, 2002
The more difficult I find it to believe that Lott doesn't harbor some genuine Dixiecrat nostalgia, or didn't at one time.
It's hard to imagine anyone who was never a segregationist ever saying such a thing.
To: ewing
I agree that Lott's performance during impeachment was severely lacking. This is not the issue here.
What is at issue is the ability of people to change the makup of the Senate via the race card and the politics of personal destruction as imagined and taught by Marxist's!

Bill Frist Voting Record No matter who the ML is the dems will gripe as they are using a stall tactic of spin. The conservative Vs. Liberal Leftist issues and judicial nominees are what concerns them,as they are so far left they are self made demons that have no issues but know what they don't want and that is conservative judges at all costs of stalling and railroading and taking the heat off themselves.

My script wasn't critical, and Thurmond is known to bask in such praise. He's disavowed his Dixiecrat past often and for decades. There is no sting there for him.
Segregation has not been a political issue since the 60s. Lott simply forgot that someone might dredge it up as a issue. That is all there is to it!
Unfortunately, it was Lott that dredged it up.

Yes, one can only imagine the horror of Hillarys reign. I can think of nothing worse for this country short of a massive Nuclear attack from Russia. Seriously.I'd prefer the nuclear attack.
To: John Lenin
I agree that Lott is now damaged goods. It would be my preference that he resign on his own and at the time of his choosing. I do not believe he should be insulted and maligned by his own party to do so. This would likely cause him to resign in anger and disgrace. He would then upset the balance of power again in the senate. He would be trapped in a corner and would have no choice, if only to show that he is no man's whipping boy.
I am sure most people would understand this.

IF LOTT WANTS TO END THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL...
I think Lott should just blatently fess up and say he 'is' predjudiced against the black progressive leftist communistic caucus in which the Clinton's have made of the VERY HARD LEFT, democratic party.
This way they have to shut up and then the leftist communists in the media and politics and Hollywood can scream how right winger he is. THEN he is only guilty of being an extremist right winger not a racist. And then with class he can then say that he will 'consult with his fellow republicans, and see if any voting considerations are at hand for the ML role. And make clear he will remain in the senate.
Then the dems will be back in the spotlight (where they belong) as they have NO ISSUES but to bash and call names) and deal with the judicial nominees and other pertinent issues they can no longer try to stop.

I don't think it will help to criticize the black caucus unless there is a issue worth fighting over. Lott respects differences of opinion, so he would be lying if he said what you suggested.
It will be interesting to hear what he has to say on BET tomorrow. I hope he does well with the expected questions and I am sure you will see what is truly in his heart.
