Prayer Request for Coast Guard Rescue that is Underway in Oregon
68-69TonkinGulfYatchClub

Posted on 12/12/2002 6:43:31 PM PST by 68-69TonkinGulfYachtClub

Pray Request

This same boat, 52' Motor Lifeboat Intrepid, is right now towing a 52' sailboat back to Charleston OR.
On board are 3 of my Coast Guard Brothers and 1 Sister.
They are battling 30-40 foot waves and nearing the harbor entrance.
They have been underway since 10 AM PST and went about 15 miles out
to rescue the sailboat and the 2 people onboard.
Due to extreme bar conditions
They will have to stay outside of the bar and attempt a crossing in the morning.
The 2 47' boats will be at the bar entrance when they finally cross.
I personally know all involved (except the man and woman on the sailboat).
This is how some of my Brothers and Sisters that I work with every Thursday
are spending part of this holiday season, saving others lives.
The former CO of the base is the SAR (Search and Rescue) co-ordinator at the
13th CG District headquarters in Seattle.
Please say a prayer for the safety of all involved.
Thank You

OOPs, make that Charleston, not Coos bay. Sorry.

Thanks for posting the Navy Hymn. There is nothing more beautiful than hearing it sung in the Chapel at the U.S. Naval Academy by the Midshipmen. I can't help but cry when I hear it. The full impact of it hits there, when you realize that some of those singing it probably will perish on the sea.

Coos Bay is about in the middle of Oregon coast, a little to the south side past halfway down. Maybe 100 miles north of the CA border.

It's worth noting that those bouys are reporting about a 20 foot swell, but also about a 10 foot wind driven sea on top of that. For those unfamiliar with such things: Swells are waves coming in from somewhere else. Seas are caused by winds right where you are.

What this means is that since they are both pretty big, it makes for a very chaotic waveform. Sometimes they'll add together for the occasional 30 footer, and since they're almost always coming from different directions, they make for a nasty unpredictable monster beating on the outside of the boat.

Hang in there guys...

Thanks for the up-date. I pray they will ride this out tonight safely, under God's watch.

The man and woman on the sailboat will probably owe their lives to these brave CoastGuardsmen. (What were they doing out there, anyway?)

They're probably discussing that between themselves even as we speak. That's a safe bet. ;-)

Coast Guard Prayer
Eternal Father, Lord of Hosts,
Watch o'ver the men and women
who guard our coasts.
Protect them from the raging seas;
And give them light and life and peace.
Grant them from they great throne above;
the shield and shelter of they love.

Adding our prayers for your brothers and sister.

Experts make things LOOK easy, professionals make it look like art, USCG are both.

May the good Lord bless and keep them safe!

OK, this was the straw....finally registered after enjoying and laughing and crying at posts & articles for the last six-months.

I live in Bandon (and Bend) just S of Charleston. I know the storms they get (and the one they are being hit with now - not on generator power, yet).

68-69 TGYC - You have my prayers and the prayers of our household. To the rest of you Freepers - God Bless You Too.

A broken-glass Republican.

Our Father,

We pray together for those who are in danger upon the open sea. We ask that you will quiet the waves and calm the winds. Protect the vessels involved, and guard and fortify all equipment which is needful for the rescue and preservation of life.

Give those brave rescuers and the ones being rescued the courage, strength, and stamina to withstand this difficult night. Comfort and give strength to the friends and families of those who are on the sea this night. Hold these precious souls in your hands.

This which we call forth for them we also call forth for any and all who are in similar circumstances, for whom these prayers may apply. Adjust all of our prayers to be according to thy will. We thank you and praise you for answering our prayers and holding those who are in trouble close to you.

Amen

The Coast Guard crewmen of these little rescue vessels and the helicopters are some of the bravest and most incredible Americans we have!

They are in an awesome storm right now. I have heard of 50' maverick waves in this storm and the one coming right after this storm.

A prayer for them and those they will rescue is off from here.

God Bless them!

Prayers are the quickest and best support we can give to your CG brothers and sister right now. They've got mine that's for sure. In '66 I was on a LCM-8 from Da Nang to Dong Ha. We were hauling some trucks and supplies up to the DMZ base. The last few hours out on the ocean weren't fun. That little 130 foot boat was bouncing and rocking something terrible. Going across the bar into the Cua Viet river was .........exciting, I guess is the polite word. 30 foot waves didn't stop the coxswain from getting into the protection of the calm river. Of the 12 boats 9 of us made it across the bar safely, one was half full of water and the other two came in stern first. I sure was glad for the Mike boats that escorted us up to Dong Ha because our 4 or 5 knots didn't seem very fast to me.

Tonk, I'm back ( sort of ) from another bare metal recovery, and don't have my files available yet... run a web search for the website of John W. Rollinson and you'll find my Grandfather... he was a "lifesaver" before there was a Coast Guard.

A saying in my family? "The Sea has no mercy..."

It doesn't say whether the people are aboard the sailboat or the CG vessel. If they're in the sailboat in 40 ft. confused seas, God help them. They can get tossed around like beans inside a maracha, so I hope they're wedged inside a well-padded berth. I'll have to check, but if they abandon the sailboat, it's left out there and the CG brings in the people on board. If the boat can be salvaged later, it gets into a rather messy area of maritime law--salvage rights, and all that.
