SEVEN MORE 'CATHOLIC' UNIVERSITIES FOUND PROMOTING PLANNED PARENTHOOD

Cardinal Newman Society head calls such promotion “a scandal and a terrible crime”

CHICAGO, December 9, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) - LifeSite has learned of seven more 'Catholic' universities and colleges in the United States which promote Planned Parenthood on their websites. In light of San Francisco University’s recent removal (at least temporarily) of links to the pro-abortion organization from its website, LifeSite hopes that this latest expose will shine a needed cleansing light.

DePaul University in Chicago, founded in 1898 by the Vincentians boasts of being "The largest Catholic university in the nation." However, DePaul not only links to the pro-abortion Planned Parenthood but goes even further offering its students internships with the pro-abortion organization.

Georgetown University in the nation's capital pride itself on being "founded in 1789” and “the nation's oldest Catholic and Jesuit university." Nonetheless, the Georgetown website offers a "sexual health & safety" page which would make even insensitive Catholics blush with embarrassment with its encouragement of the use of sexual aids including "dental dams" and "latex gloves" for "safer sex". Not only does Georgetown link to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, it also suggests the use of the abortifacient morning after pill in case of rape.

Loyola University in Chicago is one of the largest of the 28 Jesuit universities and colleges in the United States. Besides linking to Planned Parenthood, the university's women's studies website links to the pro-abortion lobby group National Organization of Women.

Santa Clara University in California which was founded in 1851 by the Society of Jesus not only links to Planned Parenthood on its Medical Assistance website, but explains clearly that " Planned Parenthood provides services including family planning, pregnancy testing, prenatal care, cancer screening, surgical sterilization, abortion."

Seaattle University in Washington claims "The Gospel vision of the human person in society, as understood and developed by our Catholic and Jesuit tradition, is the wellspring of our educational values and hence our educational mission." But on a university website, besides linking to Planned Parenthood for "wellness" services, the students are urged to "activism" with groups such as "National Organization for Women" and "National Gay and Lesbian Task Force".

Two other Catholic institutions, Boston College and John Carroll University in Cleveland also offer their students links to Planned Parenthood offices from the university websites.

LifeSite sought a comment on the findings from Patrick J. Reilly, President & CEO of the Cardinal Newman Society which was established in 1993 and dedicated to the renewal of Catholic identity in Catholic higher education. The Society, which is backed by ten U.S. bishops and archbishops and counts among its spiritual advisers, Rev. Benedict Groeschel, and Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, works towards the faithful implementation of Pope John Paul II's 1990 constitution Ex Corde Ecclesae "On Catholic Universities".

"In Ex Corde Ecclesiae, one of the requirements of a Catholic university is that all official actions and commitments must be in accord with the university's Catholic identity," said Reilly. "Anything that would appear or be announced or promoted by the university's website or professors is an official action. By promoting Planned Parenthood or taking any step that might drive students towards Planned Parenthood for an abortion is not only a violation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae but a scandal and a terrible crime against these young women."

How could any Catholic University forget the beauty of a Mother and Child?

Ignatius Press' Faith and Life, is a good starting point for Catholic Catechisis. It is well written, & beautiful, and yet, if you teach catechism everyday of the week the Faith and Life series would fall short of material, you still would have to supplement it with another series.

I do not think I said everything post VII needs to be dumped, however, there are many innovations which have been carried out since VII which have definetely not helped the Faith. To begin one must recognize that VII was not a dogmatic council, it was pastoral. I am not bound to go along with anything in it, since it did not carry the weight of infallibility or official Church
Dogma.

Many of the wreckovations that have been carried out in the name of VII have been actually carried out because progressives and modernists wished to do so, found themselves in positions where they could do so, and as you say, since many of the faithful were either not paying atttention or did not know better, or thought they had to be obedient, then the innovations got passed off as done deals.

I don't attend a Latin Mass either, I did not grow up with one, I have only ever attended, that I know of, one Latin Mass, so I do not know how my 'prayerful experiences', would be better with a Latin Mass. I do not receive Communion in the hand, nor am I a lay minister because I believe the handling of the Body of Christ is a privilege of the ordained. I do not think any less of a person attempting to live sincere, holy, Catholic lives but who also receives communion in the hand. I personally have come to
believe it is not right. Maybe one day you will too. I think Communion under both species should be administered by the priest, I think a priest can do this using special chalice and it is what is called intinction. I am not sure of the term. However, self administered reception of the Blood of Christ I think falls into the same category as receiving in the hand.

I think the practice of receiving in the hand has led many to lessen the belief of the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. I think this was done on purpose and has lessened the Sacramental aspect in people's minds. I agree, those who do not believe in the True Presence, also don't care a fig whether Mass is in the local language or Latin. Yes, God bless them for at least showing up to Mass, at least they still attend Mass, bc they know that to not attend on Sunday is a sin. I also think as you say the newer priests in some cases are more conservative, may be this will also lead them to teaching the truth from the pulpit, because yes, the average Catholic has not been well taught. I think though that this ties in with the role of lay persons
distributing communion. It is a privilege of the ordained, too many priestly duties are being coopted by those outside the priesthood, and priests have been emasculated.

The case of poor catechesis brings us both to homeschooling. My objection to Hahn/Hasson is their work in NACHE which
promotes guidelines for homeschoolers which push homeschoolers into the poor parish catechetical programs which are ommitting knowledge of the Faith which should be passed on, while at the same time in many cases pushing sex ed right in the religion books. These things are wrong, there are encyclicals, canon laws, and papers from Rome which point out that it is the parents duty to teach the children sex ed, or to supervise the content of the program. Time and again you have a Cardinal, a Bishop in a position of power in the church, diocesan priests, Church beaurocratic lay people, who deny parents this right, and
cause problems and grief. Furthermore, the people H & H work with also promote the use in Catholic homeschools of
materials which, contrary to Church teaching, are not permeated with Catholic thought. I am not talking here of a course which you may be teaching your children, which is not available within these teachings. I am talking of their book printed by Ignatius Press which makes light of the use of secular and anti Catholic material, while at the same time barely mentioning long time
Catholic homeschooling programs which are available, and further: banning solid and orthodox Catholic homeschool providers from selling their wares at NACHE curriculum fairs, because they (Hahn/Hasson) have disagreements on certain Catholic points of theology. I purchased their book: Catholic Homeschooling Homeward Bound and was supremely disappointed when I sent away for one after another of the resouces they mentioned in the book, only to find, there was not Catholic material coming homeward bound to my home. There is a lot of documentation on this by the Mother's Watch Organization http://www.motherswatch.org/

These are part of my objections to Ignatius Press materials, supporting them by purchasing a book that would be considered non objectionable, enables them to continue to sell books which are contrary to the Faith. Does not make sense to me. I don't want to be an enabler.

These colleges who want the Catholic label, don't want individuals who have read Church history or Church encyclicals, because then they would be publicly chastised as Life Site did when they engage in pro death activity. It is the same for organizations or individuals who promote non Catholic ideology or thought.

I can understand what you're saying about reception of the Holy Eucahrist in the hand possibly being a cause of the reduction in the number of folks who don't believe in the Real Presence, but I don't necessarily agree. I think it was the horrible catechetical programs over the last 30 yrs. which has done that. I had to go to a public high school because our Catholic high school closed, and thus had to attend CCD classes. I endured the 9th and 10th grade classes, and actually enjoyed the 11th grade class because the teacher was a man from the Parish who had attended the Seminary briefly in high school, and was a faithful Catholic. In the 12th gr. the class was, once again, a waste of time, so my Mama let me stop going.

I have educated myself in my adulthood about the Faith, though my basic understanding is what I learned up to the 8th gr. in Catholic School. Maybe it is a regional thing (the Northeast has some STRANGE Catholics), but I am continually having to educate my adult friends on what the Church teaches. That includes folks who went to Catholic School thru the 12 gr. and attended Catholic colleges! It is appalling!

Here's the email I sent to the newspaper, alumni orgs, and several other people at my mala mater, Boston College:

As an alumnus of Boston College (A&S '93), I recall that the university was still ostensibly Catholic when I attended, now nearly 10 years ago. Recently, I have been made aware that Boston College now provides on its web site the phone number of the local branch of Planned Parenthood. If you are incredulous about this, as I was, just have a look:

Lest we forget, Planned "Barrenhood" is that same nefarious organization that promotes such "Catholic" values as abortion, birth control, and sexual adventurism of all kinds, even among children. We should also keep in mind that this purveyor of death is a major player in the big-money abortion industry and actively supports such Culture of Death organizations as "Catholics for a Free Choice," -- an agit-prop group that is attempting to have the Vatican removed from the United Nations.

Now I ask you: why is the phone number for this horribly anti-Catholic organization being provided on the web site of an ostensibly Catholic university? It should be removed post-haste lest BC lose whatever remaining shred of credibility it has among those of us who managed to remain Catholic after passing through.
