White House aides are floating two names to replace aging Chief Justice William Rehnquist: Associate Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia.
Top Bushies say the conservative Scalia has the edge but not to count Thomas out-even though Dems still try and tag him as Anita Hill's sexual harasser.
Bush, however, has been told that Justice Thomas isn't keen on going through the meat grinder again.

Good to get this done now so that the Dims can't appoint Bill Clinton as chief justice under Hilllary

Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia are both great guys and seeing either one of them on the Chief Justice's bench would make my day.

Clarence Thomas as Chief Justice? Yes, yes, and a thousand times yes! He's understated, analytical but practical, precise, careful, and would make a great Chief Justice!

I would love to see Joe Biden's evilly grinning teeth fall out of his mouth and clatter all over the Senate floor, in some sort of hyper-allergic shock reaction to a committee vote getting Thomas out to the floor.

I had the honor of eating breakfast with Justice Thomas and he is a great guy.
I didn't even know that he did the honors at Rush's wedding!

Bush, however, has been told that Justice Thomas isn't keen on going through the meat grinder again.Well, I think Clarence Thomas should go for it anyhow. He would make a fine Chief Justice. Screw the meat grinder. The 'Rats already took their best shot and with the Republicans in control, it will be a relative shoo-in. Let the 'Rats lose more support with the black voters by trying to smear Thomas once again.

I've always thought that Scalia is the heir-apprarent to Rehnquist. I was so disappointed that Souter turned out to be a liberal, especially since Bush 41 appointed him. I don't think W will make that same mistake. Probably Gonzales will get the nod as the next Justice.

Which Justices are leaving?

I would almost want to see the floor debate on a Thomas nomination, it would be easier to paint the liberals as extremists.
This must be some brilliant Rove strategery...

I would LOVE watching the demonRATs try pulling Anita Hill out of her hole again after 8 years of defending the rapist in chief. I can understand Thomas not wanting to go through that again but I sure hope Bush picks him and he accepts the challenge.

I love Justice Thomas, but IMO, Scalia is THE MAN for the job.

According to White House aides O'Connor, Rehnquist, and Stevens are leaving.

All Conservatives please note: The correct title is "Chief Justice of the United States," not "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court." It would be nice if the right side in the forthcoming bloodbath would get that consistently correct.

It will be interesting to hear what Joe Biden and Ted Kennedy have to say about a Thomas nomination.
