Interesting, does one have the right to prevent firefighters from entering one's burning home?

Thoughts on this story and the man's run-in with police?

If his permit was up-to-date and the weapons were legal, then I think he screwed up by threatening the chief.

Yes. Mr. Arford should get all his legal weapons back as soon as he is freed from prison for his crimes, assuming his state allows ex-felons to own weapons.

While a legal gun owner is no concern of mine, pointing a weapon at a fireman is a concern. Firemen are the least of anyone's worries and are the true public servants of them all.

Arford, a 59-year-old budget analyst at Fort Monmouth, then grabbed an unloaded M-1 rifle that was leaning against his bookshelf and attempted to point it at the chief, McGovern said.

That's assault.

After reading the article and all the posts I'm inclined to believe that this guy is a nut, but it wouldn't be the firt time a liberal reporter has distorted the truth to push an agenda. The article shows some pretty flimsy evidence.

How about this?

Arford, a civilian Army employee, was arrested by Patrolman John Lehnert and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, police said. Arford was being held yesterday at the Monmouth County Jail on $10,000 bail.

Now, in my best NRA voice "We don't need new 'Gun Laws'. We just need to enforce the ones we have".

If convicted of a felony, Arford could potentially lose the right to keep the weapons, police said.

He does not need to conviced of a felony to lose his right to keep his property. The local Getsapo just needs to get the Fire Department to take out a restraining order against Arford attempting to limit the FD's ability to fight fires.

"Robert Frank, a volunteer firefighter and off-duty police officer from Little Silver, grabbed Arford and the rifle before he could raise the weapon, McGovern said. "

Hmm... If I had my tinfoil hat on I would suspect that the guy didn't point the gun at anybody and the off-duty cop arrested him without provocation. I don't think there is a rule against grabbing an unloaded weapon in your own house and *not* pointing it at anybody.

""The ammo could have exploded and shot all over," McGovern said. "If it got hot enough and the gunpowder ignited, the rounds would have become projectiles shooting out of the home." "

This is baloney. A cartridge that isn't in a barrel is a soft case with a heavy bullet. The bullet won't move much. The case will rupture and go pop or the bullet will slide out of the cartridge and the gas pressure will escape in all directions, leaving the bullet nearby.

Without a barrel to hold the gas pressure and accelerate the bullet, the bullet can't gain much velocity.

It would be a 2nd amendment story if they seized the guns when he had not done anything threatening to the firemen.

The fact that he has a ton of weapons is irrelevant to the story- funny that they included it in the headline huh!

The perfect dream of a house filled with hundreds of firearms and something just had to spoil it. Imagine the smell of gun oil permeating the curtains and rugs, ahhh...Buckets of bullets just asking for you to run your fingers through them, leaving the delightful smell of brass on your hands. Waking to sun shining through the window and the sight of guns everyplace your eyes turn. Ahhhhhh....the touch and feel of cold steel contrasted with the warm wood. ahhh....

Heaven on earth. A gun nut's paradise.

When Fire Chief John Feeny ordered Arthur L. Arford to leave his smoky home in a residential area of Colonial Court about 4 p.m. to make way for firefighters, Arford told Feeny the department had no right to force him off his property, said Detective Joseph McGovern

The guy was ORDERED to leave his home, that is what set him off.

Speaking of how things OUGHT to be under the law (rather than how they may actually be in this jurisdiction), if your home is situation close enough to other homes that the fire could reasonably spread to those homes, I don't think a homeowner or resident should be able to prohibit firefighters from coming in to do their job. Likewise if there are children or disabled adults still inside, or if there is reasonable fear that loaded guns, piles of ammo, grenades, etc. may start popping off and endangering people on neighboring properties. You should have the right to prevent government employees or volunteer emergency workers from saving YOUR life and property, but you shouldn't have the right to prevent them from saving OTHER PEOPLE's lives and property.

When the DemocRATs in New Jersey finish with getting their "Smart Gun" Law approved, and their "Ballistics Fingerprinting Law" approved, you can expect them to introduce a new law banning "Personal Arsenals". A "Personal Arsenal" will probably be defined as more than one gun.

Remember you heard it here first.

Sounds to me like a pretext to violate private property rights in the name of "community safety". Look for a bill soon in NJ to place a maxiumum limit on ammo, and which allows inspections of private residences at any time.

Yeah, and I know lots of people with cars that could kill lots of people if a tire had a blowout or if the driver had a seizure. And there are an awful lot of tankers on the highway that could explode and incinerate lots of passenger vehicles if there were a mechanical failure or if the driver of the tanker had some sort of seizure, losing control of the vehicle. The level of moronic so-called thinking by people like McGovern never fails to astonish me.
