And this same thing happens when relief is given in "humanitarian" forms. Aid supplies can be sold for cash and the cash used to procure weapons. And this has been going on in the food stamp world from the onset of the program.

"Hey, I need ten bucks to buy some liquor, can you give me the cash for this twenty dollar food stamp?"

Then the store cashes the groceries and enters a second transaction for the liquor. Simple, and done all the time.

How much money is lost each year to food stamp fraud? About $30 million, according to the best estimate provided by the Washington Department of Social and Health Services.

It's a bit hard to tell, but I believe the "Washington" referred to is the State of Washington. There's no doubt that this kind of fraud, on a national level, is orders of magnitude bigger than $30 million.

After all, the article cites ONE STORE ALONE in Ohio that had $24 million in illegal stamps.

We are talking about a multi-billion dollar national fraud!

One of the great mysteries to me is why food stamps are sold.

Here in Florida, people are given around 100 dollars worth of food stamps per month (I don't recall exactly the amount)

Since I used to spend at least 300 dollars on my groceries while I was single, I don't understand how people can afford to sell them.

By the way, a few years back while I used to do minor house repairs, I was paid several times with "foo famps."

A few years ago a Mayan tour guide provided the spouse and I with a first hand look of Mexico outside the Cancun arena. While traveling through the back roads, she introduced us to a local who made and sold hats, and proceeded to tell us that in her state, "you don't work - you don't eat." She also proudly stated, "we don't have welfare here."

If our government would remember Nancy's advice and "just say no" to ALL hand outs, terrorists and the worst of the worst would not be so hell bent on entering our borders. Perhaps the taxpayer would not be so discouraged from working, and recognize the value of being more charitable when there is just cause.

I know of healthy young adults getting HUD and food cards and free health care. The go to the welfare office and declare themselves indigent and unable to find work. They are American born and bred. The sorry fact is that our welfare system feeds on itself. The bureaucrats need clients to justify their own jobs. Handing out welfare benefits to the needy or non-needy is the same to them. The agribusiness industry benefits from the food handouts and that is why it won't be cut back or out. Welfare is so big of an industry that it cannot be eliminated. I see it as encouraging laziness in young people who don't have to work to survive and as they grow older they have no skills or experience to earn a living and thus continue on the dole. Don't have any answers but adding the foreign theives to the mix just escalates the resentment of taxpayers who foot the bill for the benevolence of our elected leaders.

Why not just give out free money? What do we expect anyway? If it can be exchanged for food, it'll be exchanged for money, for drugs, for car repairs. If we're not going to cut off the food stamps altogether, why not cut off these useless investigations and save a few taxpayer nickles there! Food stamps = free money!
