A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....11-22-02

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

Welcome to Maine
the way life should be

home of one of fr's finest

SheLion
Freeper since 7-28-01

SheLion and her husband, FReeper MaineRebel, hail from Ohio.
So how did they end up in the beautiful state of Maine?

As noted below, MaineRebel served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1968. Upon discharge, he and SheLion were married. He got the "itch" to go back into the military and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1970. MaineRebel became a career military man and SheLion, a military wife.
After much traveling, including a five year tour-of-duty in Germany, they received orders to Loring Air Force Base, Maine, in 1983. They packed up their van with their little daughter, two cats and a Doberman and off they went. Loring is between Limestone and Caribou. WAY up north. In fact, Caribou is the most northeastern city in the U.S. It is a three and one-half hour drive north of Bangor, a six hour drive north of Portland and a ten hour drive north of Boston.
They purchased a home right off base in 1984 and settled in. SheLion obtained civilian employent at Loring Air Force Base and was there until the base closure in 1994. MaineRebel retired from the military in 1992 and has been a Government civilian employee with DFAS (Defense Finance Agency Service) on Loring since 1996.
In SheLion's Words:

"What with the world situation, I am very thankful to have remained this far out of the mainstream of the crazy world we live in. We could never go back to living in a big city again. Can we say Window Bars? Heh!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"MaineRebel"
MaineRebel was Active Duty Military for a total of 26 years. He was in the U.S. Army from 1964-1968, serving in VietNam from June 66 until July 67 (6BN 27th Artillary). He received, not one but, two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained while serving in VietNam. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1970 and retired in 1992.
Thank you for your Service, MaineRebel, and WELCOME HOME!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SheLion's political views are best expressed in her words:
"I was never political until the Clinton years. I hate to say this, but I was registered DemocRAT. Ugh! But I would split my ticket a lot. Well, during Clintoon’s area, I switched pretty quick".

"During the Presidential Election, during all that Florida debunkel, I was literally on my KNEES! I know we have some RINO’S in office, but I would vote for a trained monkey if he was Republican over a DemocRAT any day. This might not be smart. I am sure there are some good Democrats. Hope you understand what I mean. We have some Maine Republicans who sit on the fence and are, IMHO, RINO’s. I fight with them a lot."
"Maine is very liberal. Desperately liberal. With the Internet, we are trying very hard to get the word out to the Maine Freepers and to have them spread the word as well. Maine has to pull out from under this deep dark funk we are in. What with Independent Gov. King for 8 years, and now DemocRAT Baldacci taking office as our next Governor, it’s not going to go well the next four years. But, sad to say, hitting rock bottom is what Mainer’s need to maybe wake them up. Baldacci has been marching in lock step with Clinton for so long, that he could care less about Maine. He just wants that seat to sit in power and control over a whole state."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SheLion is an advocate of the freedom of choice to smoke. Once again, in her own words:
"Ah! Smoker’s Rights Advocate. Well, sometimes it’s hard to talk about, because smokers have been made to be the most evil people on earth. And I am working very hard, along with many others, to bring it back around to where we AREN’T the devil’s children. I have been fighting for Freedom of Choice since 1990. In early 2001, I found web sites of like-minded people and was pointed to Forces International. I started corresponding with the leaders, and in August of 2001, I became Forces Maine. My Forces Maine site is posted on my about me (Profile Page) at Free Republic."
"When I was on my own, all I could do was write letters to newspapers and the lawmakers and just rant. But, after much research and countless hours of searching the Net for information, and through Forces, I now have the facts to stand behind me. What with all the bans across the United States, it is now becoming a private property rights issue. The Government wants our money, as you can see by the high taxes imposed upon us, but they are now restricting us, controlling us and banning us. Well, like we say, if tobacco is that deadly, why don’t they just ban the darn stuff. Nope! It’s about control and it’s about the money."
"I have a cartoon showing Uncle Sam sitting on a milking stool milking a cow with one hand, and his hand on the rope to release the guillotine with the other. The poor cow is saying, 'I wish he would make up his mind.' Very sad. Very true."
I got those fun facts from the Web page of one of your RINO senators, The Honorable Olympia Snow....However, there was one fact that I did not print because it was not what I found...
Eastport is the most eastern city in the United States, receiving the first rays of the morning.
I read all over the place that Caribou was the most NorthEastern city in the USA...Which is correct?
I guess we don't have to remind you to get your Pet Photos to Billie by Dec. 10. I am sure your Gizmo has it marked on his calendar...lol.
Hmm, cigar smoking...I have always wanted to smoke a cigar but do not know how to do this. Any suggestions? Should I start with a mild one or try to find an export?
The key is make sure the meat is room temp. So, at least a few hours before cooking, take it out of the fridge, out of its wrapper, pat dry, oil and spice as you like and place it on a clean platter, pan, plate, whatever, and just cover it with plastic.
This holds true for any meat/chicken/fish cooking. Ya, I know, the health limpwrist were're all going to die pseudoNazis are all against it, but unless you're some no wash slum gullion, nose digging welefare lowlife your hands and kitchen is clean.
Lastly, it's as good as it reads.
I have a poignant (to my family anyway) lobster story.
When my dear departed Mom was in her 80s, she received an unexpected check (tax refund or something) for a couple of hundred bucks. I asked what she was going to do with the money and she said she wanted to go out for a lobster dinner. She said she had never had lobster and it was something she wanted to have before her life on Earth was over.
Well, we went to a fine restaurant but I was afraid she would be disappointed in the lobster (many folks are, especially their first time to have it) so I ordered something else so she could trade with me if she was unhappy with her lobster (I LOVE lobster). She ended up eating the whole thing and enjoyed it immensely while I sat there chagrinned and drooling....It is a favorite memory I have of my Mom.
I did not mean to confuse you with my statement "Maine is no longer in the Republican column." Was not referring to Freepers from Maine at all. Guess I just thought that Maine used to be solid Republican but with those two squishy Senators and your Dem governor, it does not seem like it is to me. But, hey, you know more about Maine politics than me, for sure.
Caribou is called The Crown of Maine. We are the largest city in the north. We are 10 minutes from the Grand Falls, Canadian border and the Transatlantic Highway.
Much to our displeasure, and the displeasure of truckers, Highway 95 ends in Houlton, then we take a twisting, winding two lane road the rest of the way up here. Takes about an hour.
You get up to speed 55mph, then every 10 minutes, you have to drop back down to 35mph, because of all the little bergs. It's a nightmare. Yet, Maine will not complete that interstate the rest of the way up here. Maine is now talking about building an east/west interstate in southern Maine, which really upsets me. When you hear about 2 Maines, that is where this comes from. Southern Maine could care less about us up here.
Thanks for that tip, Leisler. Mr. D. always takes our steaks out and gets them to room temperature before he grills them. I used to nag him and harass him about this but we have never had any ill effects from this and he has been doing it for years and years.
