November 10, 2002 -- Gerry Adams, the head of Sinn Fein/IRA, was around town last week - basically flipping the bird to America's war on terrorism.
Obscenely, he had a lot of help.
Thursday, he was the guest of honor at a $500-per-plate Sinn Fein fund-raiser at the Sheraton hotel in Manhattan.

Any contribtion of any kind to the IRA by a US citizen should be a federal crime.

I saw a report that not only were the IRA aiding the FARC terrorists in South America (especially in the use of mortar attack assasinations in exchange for drug money) but are also active in the middle east where they are aiding Hamas and certain PLO factions. The link in the middle east stems from the fact that in the 70s both the PLO and the IRA used to train together and hence established linkages that are being put into effect now.
Basically the IRA has become a mercenary group in the service of terrorist groups around the world (and the IRA can at the same time be called a terrorist group in its own right). And i guess it is just a matter of time before the IRA sells its services to Al Queda. After all it would be very advantageous for Islamic terrorists if they could get IRA members (who obviously are not the prime target of searches) to bring in dangerous material to the states. Especially when you consider that the IRA has for decades established very effective smuggling routes to the US (for bringing in cash and fugitives, and for taking out weapons of all sorts). It is very simple to change such channels into delivery systems for Al Queda bombs ....especially if Al Queda ever decided to engage in bombings like the ones in Israel!
And he, if the IRA is helping Hamas and the Fatwa PLO faction set up booby traps in the West Bank why not go a step further and help Al Queda bring in explosives to the US or set up mortars in the trunk of cars and aim them at US schools? It would be the next stage of a simple progression!
And many in the US used to ignore, and some even supported, IRA activities. They were in essence viewed as 'freedom fighters' and this perception was so great that they were always assured of great amounts of donations, either in cash or weapons from sympathisers in the US. I hope that assistance becomes a thing of the past and the IRA is treated as what it truly is .....a terrorist organization which poses a real threat to the United States.

If people want to make a contribution to the peace of Northern Ireland, they shouldn't give money to anyone connected to a paramilitary organisation. These organisations, including the IRA, have become the equivalent of the Mob in Northern Ireland. The IRA's political dimension includes ties with Marxists in Cuba and elsewhere.

But many Irish-Americans - some naively, some just out of romantic foolishness - tend to block out such ugliness. They blind themselves to the simple fact that Sinn Fein/IRA undertakes its "struggle" in alliance with any number of international terrorists. Indeed, PLO and Basque ETA killers are regular attendees at Sinn Fein annual party conferences. THIS never ceases to AMAZE me. A group of 'plastic' Paddies, doling out the dollars to a group of (at worst) terrorists (at best) rampant political left wing socialists. Amazes me. These third and fourth generation wearin' o' the green Paddies, who frequent the bars of New York and Boston, should spend some of their money making a trip to West Belfast and see where the IRA (and don't get me wrong the paramilitaries on the Unionist side, are equally as bad) acting as little more than mobsters, extorting protection money out of their OWN people, and administering punishment beatings (their most recent tack being NAILING people to fence posts). Nice people, eh? May they rot in hell.

BTW, I read recently that the sniper technique used by Muhammed and Malvo - shooting from the modified trunk of a car - was something originally developed by the IRA.

The situation is just a wee bit more complicated than IRA=terrorists. While that statement is not false, it is also not the end of the story. Most Irish Americans are too far away to fully understand the situation at the local level. Nonetheless you can't expect them not to support the republicans.
As a Scot with some Irish blood I can empathise, though I don't support either side in the issue. History is written by the winners and most of it is moot now, but I was told stories by my grandfather about the coffin ships (if you want to know what that is, search for scottish highland clearances). The Gaels who survived the Anglosh genocide and made it to America may not fully understand the local politics, but it's damned hard for us to simply forgive and forget the perpetrator and condemn our brethren as terrorists.
Our Anglo-American heritage damn near destroyed the country (take a look at the "Sedition Act of 1798"). If it weren't for Celtic support of Thomas Jefferson, this country probably would have fallen to tyrants before the English tried to take it back in 1812. Anway, ancient history now, but the sycophants here get extremely boring.
It's not that Irish Americans support IRA terrorism, it's a combination of ethnic heritage, religious loyalty, and anti-English simpathy which leads them to support Gerry Adams. Some suggest we need to support the British because they are our only true allies. Well, in the current battle against Islam that is true.
Personally I have to thank the English, if it weren't for them, I wouldn't be an American. Of course, there is a historical animosity but it is kind of like being a sports fan, you aren't actually enemies with a rival teams fans (well, at least not in America, the rest of the world get whacky with their soccer).
The word terrorism was chosen because it is politically correct, but make no mistake, America is at war with Islamism. North Ireland is a totally separate issue. Of course we must support the side of law and order against the side of murdering innocents. The only problem is, in the N.Ireland conflict, both sides are bathed in the blood of innocents. I would agree with a measure blocking Gerry Adams from fund raising in America, but those who would support putting Americans in jail for sending money to Sinn Fein are idiots.

THIS never ceases to AMAZE me. A group of 'plastic' Paddies, doling out the dollars to a group of (at worst) terrorists (at best) rampant political left wing socialists. Fortunately they are in a distinct minority. Wake up most Irish-Americans in the middle of the night with the phrase "IRA" and they'll assume you're talking about Individual Retirement Accounts.
This Irish-American (me, aculeus) was in his thirties before he even met a fellow Irish-American who was an anti-British fanatic.
The noisy minority, centered in Boston and fed by the odious Kennedy Klan, is just that, a minority. (But they do have entirely too much influence in the Rat Party.)

I heard a radio talk show host talking about this editorial this morning and knew when I got back from Mass that I'd have to come back and post it for you HappyGal. (I was beaten to it though)
My grandparents (all four) emigrated to Bayonne, NJ when Standard Oil was willing to "hire Irish" in the refineries there. This was the early 1900's. My parents still live there and no surprise, it's a Democratic Party stronghold. My parents haven't voted for a Democrat (when given the choice) since Ronald Reagan's first term but they are still registered as such.
When Jim McGreevey was running for governor of New Jersey, he tried his best to pander to the Irish Americans and sent special mailings to anybody with a "Mc" or and "O'" in front of their name. My mother attended a party fund raiser and was very offended by McGreevey's speech where he referenced the Irish Americans as if they were still digging ditches for the Anglo-American land barons.
McGreevey, just to get you up to speed on some NJ politics, also hired a police chief from Newark (DemocRAT stronghold) to lead the NJ state police. This in spite of the fact that the guy admitted he cheated on his taxes and beat people in the streets. He just resigned under pressure that he had organized crime connections. McGreevey also hired a "security export" for NJ. This guy was an Israeli citizen, had no experience in security and couldn't get FBI security clearance but he was the pal of McGreevey's biggest money donor. It was a 6 figure salary! He was forced to resign. There's also a poet on the state payroll who thinks Jews flew the airplanes into the World Trade Center. And on and on.
Now I've got this jerk of a governor hosting fundraisers for terrorists.
I love New Jersey but it's getting really hard to take.

Take a good look at that 2000 presidential election map, and then remember that President Bush didn't spend a single minute in New Jersey campaigning for Forrester in the month leading up to this past election.
The speculation here is that the adults in the Republican Party are treating everything east of the Delaware River as if it isn't even part of the United States anymore.

It is speciously argued that the struggle is a Catholic v Protestant thingy. In reality, it is the gross manipulation of people who have faith over whom will throw the Brits out of Ireland and declare an independant nation that will be a stepchild thereafter.
