With Bush gone, the Texas Dems figured the natural order would be restored. Instead, on Tuesday they were trounced up and down the ticket: the Senator, Governor and Lieutenant-Governor are all Republican, the Grand Old Party strengthened its grip on the state Senate and took control of the House away from the Democrats for the first time since 1873.
That's to say, Bush effected real, long-term political change in Texas. On Tuesday, he did the same across America. In the next couple of months, he'll make it a hat-trick in Iraq.
Viva!!!
Two-Gun Tex didn't have to fire a shot, merely stand back and let his opponents shoot themselves in the foot - or possibly a little higher up.
LOL, that's so true.
The result is that the judiciary committee is now back in Republican hands, and Senator Leahy's got a one-way ticket on the oblivion express. Mr Bush has destroyed the guy without ever having to say a word about him. Meanwhile, all the states the Dems specifically targeted - from Florida to New Hampshire - are more Republican than ever. I was wrong. The Bush way is more effective.
Agreed. I love this guy! Thanks for the ping, Habs.
Pokey, there's still a boatload of people on this board that don't get it.
Only time I have campaigned for someone by telling people that the candidate had the potential to be a great President. I was lucky to learn about him early from my brother who lives in Texas.
The more I learned about him, the more I believed he was going to be touched by destiny.
Like you, my husband and I knew there were a lot of dangerous Clinton chickens that were going to come home to roost. And great Presidents are those who grasp a great dilemma and solve it, and don't pass the buck to the next President.
Buchanan faced the same problems that Lincoln did. But Buchanan passed the buck, and Lincoln is remembered as one of our great Presidents, even though our Civil War was the worst time in our history.
The Louisiana run-off is in December, and I am asking for support for our last "man" at bat, Suzanne Haik Terrell.
Suzanne Haik Terrell, graduate of Loyola University Law School, former New Orleans City Council member, first Republican woman to hold statewide office (as Elections Commissioner.) Since taking office in 2000 she has achieved many of her goals, cutting the bloated Department's budget by canceling contracts, streamlining operations, and downsizing the Department's spending practices and personnel.
"We will never create a culture in this country that honors life until we have a pro-life woman making the case every day from the Senate floor. Today there are no pro-life women in the Senate. That must change. Louisiana can change it."--Suzanne Haik Terrell

You have made a wonderful point. I would like to add the words to the hymn from which President Bush took the title of his book, A Charge to Keep. This is an old hymn by John Wesley.
A charge to keep I have,
A God to glorify,
A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky.
To serve the present age,
My calling to fulfill:
O may it all my powers engage
To do my Masters will!
Arm me with jealous care,
As in Thy sight to live;
And O Thy servant, Lord, prepare
A strict account to give!
Help me to watch and pray,
And on Thyself rely,
Assured, if I my trust betray,
I shall for ever die.
I may disagree on a policy matter, as we all will. I know that President Bush will always do what he believes is best for the country.
An excellent piece by Mr Steyn with whom I do not always agree. I would change only one word: the President's political moves were deft, not sly. More akin the style of chess player than a down-home Texas cowboy.
One more note: A great big Texas "Howdy, Ma'm" to Ms. Pelosi. I'm sure the administration is just tickled that you're in town. A hefty dose of San Francisco liberal politics is just what the DNC needs to get the party faithful back on course! Yes, that's exactly the way to recapture Georgia, Texas, Florida, Missouri, etc, etc.
Yes, it is a Methodist hymn. It is one not used as much in the church as some of Wesley's more famous ones, but it is in the Methodist hymnal.
Say, that would make a good song lyric. ;-)
Pinging Arkansas.
Told ya' so, remember?
;-)
