 1) Click on the graphic to open the Calendar. 2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up. 3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit. 4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it. 5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me an FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~ Mixer |

Why do we wear poppies of all things to commemorate those who died in battle?
Well, the poppy has quite a history of growing up in places where blood has been shed and lives have been lost in battle. This phenomenon was first noted during the Napoleonic Wars when the blood-red flower bloomed around the fresh graves of fallen soldiers. Then, during the First World War, poppies again rose up around soldiers' graves as they had a century earlier.
The scientific explanation for this symbolic recurrence is that poppies tend to flourish in soil that has been turned up and that is rich in lime. What does this have to do with war? Well, when land mines and bombs explode they tend to not only churn up the ground but they also create a lot of rubble as buildings and structures are destroyed and collapse (limestone used to be a very common building material as well as a common gravestone). Marry limestone to the earth in this manner and voila - poppies.
It was Canadian Dr. Lt.-Col. John McCrae who initially brought the symbolic significance of this flower to the world's attention after WWI when he wrote his enduring poem "In Flander's Fields".
Guess we've been pretty good kids lately, huh? LOL
