Suzie Terrell needs your help in Louisiana runoff!
Posted on 11/06/2002 5:23:32 PM PST by strick68
Suzie Terrell will face the incumbent Democrat Mary Landrieu (sp?) in a runoff for the U.S. Senate seat in Louisiana on Dec. 7th. According to Hugh Hewitt http://www.hughhewitt.com the new campaign finance laws DO NOT APPLY TO THIS RACE!!! This race will immediately become a Democrat soft money party in an effort to deny the Republicans the opportunity of padding their new lead in the Senate. We must help Suzie in whatever way we can. Her website http://www.suzieterrell.com does not accept online donations (yet) but you can call (225)218-8683 or donate by mail to: Suzanne Haik Terrell for U.S. Senate PO Box 44267 Baton Rouge, LA 70804 If she wins and the John Thune/Tim Johnson race in South Dakota breaks our way, we will have a lead of 53-47-1 over the 'RATS and Independent Jumpin' Jim Jeffords!! Let's help this good woman by donating!! And if you can, try to get down to Louisiana to walk precincts for her. Go to http://www.stomp4victory.org for information. And a special thanks to Hugh Hewitt for this information.

The d*mned Campaign Finance "Reform" law does apply to this runoff election in Louisiana. The effective date of that law was 6 November, and it has not yet been struck down by any court. So it's in effect. SEC. 402. EFFECTIVE DATES AND REGULATIONS.
(a) GENERAL EFFECTIVE DATE.
(1) IN GENERAL. Except as provided in the succeeding provisions of this section, the effective date of this Act, and the amendments made by this Act, is November 6, 2002.
(2) MODIFICATION OF CONTRIBUTION LIMITS. The amend-ments made by
(A) section 102 shall apply with respect to contributions made on or after January 1, 2003; and
(B) section 307 shall take effect as provided in sub-section (e) of such section.
(3) SEVERABILITY; EFFECTIVE DATES AND REGULATIONS; JUDICIAL REVIEW. Title IV shall take effect on the date of enactment of this Act.
(4) PROVISIONS NOT TO APPLY TO RUNOFF ELECTIONS.
Section 323(b) of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (as added by section 101(a)), section 103(a), title II, sections 304 (including section 315(j) of Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as added by section 304(a)(2)), 305 (notwithstanding subsection (c) of such section), 311, 316, 318, and 319, and title V (and the amendments made by such sections and titles) shall take effect on November 6, 2002, but shall not apply with respect to runoff elections, recounts, or election contests resulting from elections held prior to such date.

Thanks for the ping. I visited her website tonight and volunteered my services. Calcasieu Parish (my neck of the woods) gave Landrieu 55%. Of course - this part of the state is still Edwards country, so go figure.
Count me in for this fight - I'm reporting for duty!

Oh, thank you so much. I think her site is user friendly and convenient for volunteers to sign up. For starters, I'd love to see every parish covered with Terrell yard signs.

This almost makes me wish I still lived in New Orleans. I have no use for any of the Landrieus or their ilk. A contribution definitely seems in order here. I just wish I had the time to return to Louisiana for a few days and lend a hand.
Go Suzie!!!!!

I'll have to call and harangue my niece and nephew who live in New Orleans! What are the chances of the supporters of the other six candidates moving their support to Terrell? Were any of the other candidates liberals, greens, etc? I think Landrieu only got 46% of the vote, didn't she? I know Terrell only got 20 something, but with the other candidates votes, she could pull this off! I hope her voters will be motivated to come back out in Dec. to vote for her as much as I hope Landrieu's WON'T!

I don't recall any Greens on the ballot. Other than Landrieu and Terrell, there were 3 other Republicans, a Democrat, a few Independents and a Libertarian.

How hard can it be to enable online donations. Sheesh!!

I'm just guessing here, but common sense would tell me that as this is a run-off of a race that happened pre new financial reform laws, that the run-off would not be subject to the new law that began Nov. 6th, as the original race from which the run-off is spawned, was pre-Nov. 6th. Some election law jock can add to this interpretation.

More than 50% of the voters voted for 4 Republicans, I believe.

Thanks for the contact information, strick. Will definitely send Suzie a donation.
I was on the phone with my sister-in-law in Shreveport last night and her six "broken glass" Republican family members can't wait to vote for Suzie again!
