In perilous times such as these, filled with Breaking News on practically an hourly basis, words of war, debate about the war, an upcoming election, and scandal after scandal foisted upon this country, it is time that we FR "regulars" share helpful hints and recipes to get us through these busy days and nights ahead, logged on to FR continuously, all the while trying to maintain a "real life" -- or, at the very least, trying to maintain the appearance of one!
Please use this thread to share your experiences -- "what worked for you," if you will -- of past elections and breaking news cycles, in order to help our newest forum members understand what is coming their way -- and the preparations they must make in order to survive and still have somewhat of a life (not to mention brain) in tact after November 5th and the days that follow.
Realizing that new blood brings fresh ideas, us "old-timers" are open to any and all suggestions from any current Freepers who may have a better idea!
This IS the thread for
"Food for Breaking News"
and
"Helpful Household Tips to Free Up Time to Freep."

I'm wondering if we shouldn't go ahead and just put up the Christmas decorations while we're still lucid.

I was working at the County Courthouse, helping count votes, absentee ballots, etc. When I finally got home, I could not believe what I saw on TV. It was around midnight! I stayed up until Fox called Florida for Bush. You can imagine how I felt the next morning. This time I am teaching, so I can be home to watch Fox and be on FR.

Ha, I have you beat! Because I have one of those large Dept. 56 villages, I put it up in the basement rec room (where a lot of my family goes on Christmas Eve). Most of the year we don't use the room for anything except rainy-day play for the grandkids, SO I LEFT THE VILLAGE UP AND THREW A SHEET OVER THE WHOLE THING!!! I thought this was such a good idea that I ALSO THREW A SHEET OVER THE ARTIFICIAL TREE DOWNSTAIRS! Bwahahahaha!! I am 1/3 decorated before Thanksgiving!

Just so you know--this is a double for us in Green Bay. Not only do we have the Packer game tonight (I'm sure they're playing some team, but it doesn't matter) with all the pols showing up at Lambeau (except for the Green candidate--one hit of the bratwurst fumes & he'd be on the tarmac twitching with meat fits), AND a very very close Governor's race to watch locally on Tuesday PLUS all the other races.
HELLLLLO, crockpot!

My advice is to vote, and then tune it out as far as possible until it's over. Work the polls or get out the vote if you can, but leave the TV off and read the postmortem the next day.
Like a football game, the outcome will not be influenced by wringing your hands, yelling at the TV screen, or wishing. Unlike a football game, the struggle is not entertaining, and only the final result matters.

I told my boss I have to take tomorrow off. When He asked why....I told him I was a member of the
Free Republic Emergency Response Team...and I was just called up to be on standby.
He bought it.
It helps if you print up and laminate a card with F.R.E.R.T printed in bold. Just don't use bazooka typface....doesn't look real enough.

I just registered and am ready for what may come.

"Get to ToysRUs and buy one of those stand-up balloons...just in case!" I have a good punch line about old Marines and blowup dolls but, for the sake of tranquility, I shall pass on it this time.

Kick all toys, dirty socks, and junk under the beds and couch. Instead of air freshener, spray orange oil furniture polish and windex into the air. You can follow with air freshener if you have time.
Wash needed number of pork chops, throw into a baking dish, cover with a mixture of 1 can of cream of celery, or cream of mushroom soup and 1 can of water, (can watch tv while mixing water and soup) sprinkle pre-grated cheddar cheese over the top (check tv). Bake in 350 oven for 35 mins.(35 min tv opportunity) Open oven door, cover contents of baking dish with French onion rings, cook until browned, (must pay attention to food here). Serve with rice and ice tea.
Reassure family that the kitchen is not on fire, you are merely screaming at the tv set.

LOL....I took Wednesday off...I told my boss last week that I would be sick on Nov 6th., but your plan is good for those who do not have such an understanding boss....I feel feverish!

Here's something that the RNC sent to me that you can send to your entire address book. It's really cute.

LOL! My family is actually quite supportive of this obsession -- especially considering that it's far superior to an obsession with, say, pro wrestling, gangsta rap, etc.
Actually, my dad was the one who got me interested in politics when I was *very* young, so he's in no position to complain now. :D

Mmmm...sounds delicious. I figure on getting the crockpot going before work: 15-bean soup with a nice big ham hock, then some crusty French bread along with a salad.
I'll be cubicle-bound all day tomorrow, so I'll be counting on my Fellow Freepers as much as I can and trying to listen to Rush via Windows Media Player (Geez, I hope I don't keep getting a lot of annyoying interruptions with people wanting me to do some actual work for the Company ;-(
