As a child of the 80s and one who use to spin the turntables, hearing of the passing of Jam Master Jay this week hit home hard. As a dj in the 80s I and my brother both looked up to Run DMC for they were the first band to really utilize the Dj. Jam Master Jay and all of run DMC were a band that never let there music be negative. They always Rapped about positive things. Like the having fun and going to school. As the pioneers of Rap music and all the rock nowadays that uses Djs in there music,{LIMP BIZQIUT, Lincoln PARK} they never fell the the level that rap turned out to be. Now we have Nothing but thugs and gangsters running the rap industry. That is why people that would otherwise be upset with a Star being killed are numb to it cause they look no further then the Eminems and Snoop Dogs and mostly TUPAC and Biggy Smalls two people that in all aspects may have deserved to die...But not JMJ he was clean his music was clean RUN DMC were good people Run is a ordained minister and DMC is a Family man Cleaned himself up after years of Drinking. And Jam Master Jay was a producer trying to help get new talent from his old neighborhood on the scene.. So as i sit here and ponder All i can say is for once one of the good ones are taken from us. We all know he is in heaven spinning the Twelve hundreds makeing god and angels smile. God bless him.

While I can't say I follow the rap scene, I've been a longtime fan of Run-DMC. They were clever and catchy without being overly crude or losing their sense of humor. I was shocked when I heard Jam Master Jay was assassinated.

We be illin'.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

My only familiarity with Run-DMC is their "Christmas In Hollis" recording from a Christmas album I own. Not a bad song at all, so far as rap goes.

Thanks for the post. I just figured he was just another gangstah rappah. I am glad to be wrong, and sad to have lost a good one.

I don't like rap or hip hop. Never could stand it. And I thought the Run DMC remake of "Walk this way" was something which I thought I would only hear as a joke.

However, I can't say anything bad about the artists themselves. One can not have a taste for a persons music and respect the person who performs. Jay was OK.

What really frosts me is that hip hop has been taken over by the thugs. Yes, there are sane artists performing; good men and women who care about the right kind of things, family, god, their community, obeying the law and living a right kind of life. The press, the fame, the money seems to go to the thugs like Tupac and Smalls and those examples also seem to be paraded to the world as the model for young blacks.

I know there are better models for young blacks, and I don't just mean clones of white people who'se skin is black. Decent, upstanding African Americans who don't want to sell drugs, call women "Hos" and "cap" a cop (would they want to cap Chief Moose?). Jay fit that example better than he fit the current ideal of the hip hop star and we are the worse for his departure. I just hope that when we find out who was responsible, and it will come out, that it does not reflect even more this cult of violence which seems to prevail in the hip hop culture.

My two cents, for what its worth.

Too bad your narrow mindedness blinds you to another culture's idea of "music." Run DMC were pioneers and always trying to make their community better. You may not appreciate the music, but this man had a wife and family. Whether somebody has "found Christ" or not as your badge of approval sounds racist to me. As a white, Lutheran, accountant with an MBA who grew up on Run DMC in the 80's you are lumping everyone who listens to that "jig*b** music" in the same boat. This was a prominent black artist that influenced thousands of kids now in their late 20's to mid 30's. A shame and God Bless his family.

i can only say that i feel the same about rap now adays cause the way it is all the same. And is all thugs and gangstas...Run Dmc were like the fat boys some of the first Rap artist on movies...Tougher then leather. Not an Acadamy Award winning movie by far but still a movie that brought rap to the main stream... And it is sad that people just discount it as another Black Rapper Dead..He was not another black rapper he was a human being.. That was the King of rap along with Run and DMC. So Stop ya illin.
RIP JMJ
OH i am not the best writer but wanted to say from my heart how i feel about his passing.

said it elsewhere, will repeat it here.

my appreciation for rap is finite, but I have heard nothing but good about and from JMJ and RUN DMC.
They are pioneers in hiphop, hip-hop/rock synergy, and hip-hop movie collaborations.
Lest anyone forget, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler credited RUN DMC with jumpstarting his band's faltering career.
They were always fun and upbeat.
Though I hardly knew him, I respect JMJ and regret his passing.

I'm not much of a rap fan but this death seems to be especially tragic because Run DMC had a cleaner image than many of the acts that followed them. RIP Jam Master Jay.

Isn't it funny that the killers were "buzzed" up, (as if they knew them) and that while Jay was shot execution-style, the survivor was only shot in the leg? Seems strage to me...
