Man Arrested In Sniper Case Attended School in Fort Myers (Pic of House)

The younger of two men arrested Thursday morning in connection with the Washington, D.C.-area sniper shootings is believed to have attended public school last year in south Fort Myers.

John Lee Malvo, 17, was arrested at a rest stop in Frederick County, Md., and is one of two suspects in recent sniper attacks that have left 10 individuals dead and three wounded. Lee County school officials confirm that a teenager named Lee Boyd Malvo attended Cypress Lake High from Aug. 13 to Oct. 16, 2001, and authorities presume that individual is the same person arrested Thursday.

Police also arrested John Allen Muhammed, 41, and have said he too is linked to the sniper attacks. Authorities believe the pair may both have lived in central Fort Myers.

"We have been contacted by a law enforcement agency for information and files on this former student," said John Dattola, director of public information and community relations for the School District. "We will comply with this request and give them the information."

Dattola later said the agency was the FBI, which will review cumulative information about Malvo's course selections, grades and other academic material.

A guidance counselor at Cypress Lake High recognized the student's name from morning news reports, then contacted Principal Nancy Graham, who in turn notified district officials. Graham would not release the counselor's name, and several staff members contacted late Thursday declined to comment.

Malvo and Muhammed are believed to have rented a home at 2510 Broadway in Fort Myers from owner Antoine Eveque. Through a Creole/English translator, a woman who answered the telephone at Eveque's home said he was not available to answer questions.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office street index showed one call to 2510 Broadway since 1999. Deputies were called to the house on March 2001 but law enforcement took no action against anyone.

Betty Page moved into 2510 Broadway in October 2001, likely renting the home right after Malvo and Muhammed left. She never knew the men or whomever rented the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home before her, but her residence garnered much media attention Thursday and stirred emotions in the neighborhood.

"I said, 'Wow, it's a small world,' "Page said about her connection to Malvo and Muhammed.

"This is crazy because they lived kitty-corner from me, but I have never had trouble with my neighbors," said Veda Fremou, 47, who has lived across the street from 2510 Broadway for five years.

Fremou said people would come in and out of the house last year, around September, [ - that's September 2001 - ] at all times of the night. However, Fremou said they weren't loud and she didn't necessarily suspect anything suspicious happening there. She did recall a semi-truck parked at the house sometime last year.

By late morning Thursday, school officials still were uncertain whether the John Lee Malvo who was arrested is the same person as Lee Boyd Malvo. Dattola said much of the district's doubt was eliminated by the late afternoon, but he would not elaborate on what information led officials to believe Lee Boyd Malvo is indeed John Lee Malvo. The FBI telephoned the district around 3 p.m. with its request for student records.

At about the same time, Graham was prepping her school's roughly 1,900 students by announcing over the intercom system that an individual arrested in connection with the sniper shootings likely attended class there. Few teenagers knew Malvo because he only attended class for 39 days, but word traveled quickly as students exited class to a throng of media contingents. ...snip...

I knew that Malvo and his mother may have lived in Florida, but this was the first I'd seen that Muhammed did also. I'm wondering if all the press reports would add up to all the places he lived at different times.....

Re the undercover car bit, I read somewhere that that is what kind of cars the lot sold.

I am having trouble with the pix of Mohammad.In the color shot with Malvo, he dosnt look like the horrible black and white pix that the taskforce put out.

Anybody but me wonder if a DNA check on the two perps is needed to prove who they really are?

Someone posted up the restraining order from 2000 and it listed him as John Mohammed (sp?) and the wife and children's name were also Mohammed, so I think it had to be before that.

THERE was speculation yesterday whether stolen or fraudulent birth certificates, including one belonging to an Antiguan woman, may have been used by US sniper suspect, John Allen Muhammad, to obtain an Antiguan passport, officials in the eastern Caribbean island said yesterday.

Muhammad, believed to have been behind the killing of 10 persons in the Washington area, was christened John Allen Williams, the name in which he was issued an Antigua & Barbuda passport -- number 0118115 -- on July 4, 2000. The passport was to expire in 2010.

Williams had changed his surname to Muhammad after converting to Islam years before applying for the Antiguan passport.

Muhammad, had in support of his application for an Antiguan passport, presented the authorities in St John's, the Antiguan capital, with a birth certificate, ostensibly of his mother, showing that she was an Antiguan, Eva Ferris, born in St John's on November 12, 1929.

However, the family of an Antiguan woman named Eva Ferris, who lives in Connecticut in the USA, insisted that she has no son. They suggested that her birth certificate -- whose information seemed to match precisely that of Muhammad's mother -- may have been stolen from a daughter who teaches at the Greenville Primary School in Rose Street, Ottos, where Muhammad's three children went to school between mid-2001 and 2002. He had spirited them out of the United States after the break-up of his second marriage.

No other Eva Ferris could be traced in Antigua yesterday, except one who the authorities said was dead.

Muhammad's (Williams') own birth certificate, showed that the was born is New Orleans, on December 31, 1960, and that his mother was Eva Feris, who was born in Antigua. However, on the Williams birth certificate, Feris is spelt with a single "r".

Ironically, although Muhammad applied for an Antiguan passport in 2000, the island's chief immigration officer, Col Clyde Walker said records they discovered show that he arrived in Antigua on May 20, 2001 and stayed at Pineapple Beach Hotel for one month.

"For this year I've not recovered any documentation on him ... but we are still looking for that," Walker said.

The Antiguan authorities have sent copies of the birth certificate to the United States Embassy in Barbados for forwarding to US investigators probing the sniper killings.

Yesterday Ena Thomas, head of the Antiguan foreign ministry division that issues passports, said that the birth certificate for Eva Ferris presented by Muhammad was a genuine document in that it would have come out of the official records.

"This is valid certificate," she said. "It has the seal of the Registrar General and it was extracted on June 6, 2000."

However, there was the possibility of the document being fraudulently issued, she suggested.

"We would also ask the police to investigate," Thomas said. "There have been recent isolated cases of people using fraudulent documents."

The Ferrises have retained the services of Antigua lawyer, Harold Lovell, who called for a full inquiry by the Antiguan authorities.

"I feel that there is need for the local passport authorities to engage in a serious investigation to determine how this individual could acquire a false passport under false pretence and to determine how this could be prevented in the future," Lovell said.

This part doesn't add up either because there was a report that his mother went to WA to get her son and the INS got involved in some kind of custody dispute with her and Muhammad

Also Michelle Malkin said the mother was found working at a restaurant, a Red Robbin, I think. She had to pay a fine of $1500.00 and the boy, Malvo was allowed out on his own recognizance, to return for deportation on a certain date. Something definately not adding up. It's time to send a few INS workers packing.

I'm hoping that the laptop computer found in the Chevy Caprice (confirmed to be part of evidence inventory by Fox News) might shed some light on all this. When Muhommed was questioned by a policeman on Oct 8 in Baltimore, he was apparently making use of that laptop for some purpose. Some store clerks who were closing up remember seeing the glow of the laptop in the car when they encountered him. The incident in Baltimore gives a rare glimpse into the lifestyle that police believe Muhammad and his companion, Lee Boyd Malvo, led on the road: sleeping in cars, eating fast food on the run, checking into cheap motel rooms, and circulating anonymously through back streets, gas station parking lots and rest areas.

It was about 9 p.m. on a Monday when Thompson and Ruby encountered the man - "nice and proper," Thompson said.

The man they identified yesterday as Muhammad told the women he was from out of town, planning to drive all night and just wanted to rest in his car. He asked whether they would mind. He stood barefoot, wearing shorts and a T-shirt, outside a car Thompson described as cluttered, as if he was living in it.

By chance, he had chosen a sandwich shop next to the Donut Connection, just off the Jones Falls Expressway - a few blocks from the offices of the city police warrant apprehension task force.

Thompson recalled a laptop computer, its screen glowing blue, on the car passenger seat. She also remembered the New Jersey plate. Neither saw any sign of a traveling companion.

This DC sniper's background seems to have an erry pattern of links to last year's anthrax mailings. Hope FBI is noticing these links.

If these perps passed unchallenged in the DC area crawling with cops looking for a white guy in a white van, maybe they missed these guys dropping Anthrax letters into mailboxes in Western New Jersey. They should check to see if this dead Ferris woman lived near that woman in Connecticut that was killed by Anthrax.

I wonder if the Ferris woman was killed under mysterious circumstances? Could it be that the Muhammad character assumed an identity and used this dead Ferris woman as a cover? It would be interesting to see if she was a character witness for him when he filled to change his name?
