A device that can be incorporated into any type of firearm aims to make it harder for criminals to get away with murder.

Every time a weapon fitted with the device is fired, it stamps an indelible imprint of the firearm's serial number onto the bullet's shell casing.

This will never do. Each and every firearm should be equipped with a GPS/cell phone/modem that sends an email to the FBI telling them your identity and your exact location every time you squeeze the trigger.

"You don't have direct access to it with a file. In order to be able to get to it and file it off, you'd have to ruin the gun," Lizotte said

I'm trying to figure out what area of the gun I would not be able to access. If it's in the chamber, I remove the barrel or get an aftermarket added on. If it's in the breach face, a steel brush should remove any microscopic markings.

You don't even have to replace the barrel. An emery cloth, or light application of a Dremmel tools and no more markings!

It the same with rifling marks. Fire lap the barrel and no more traceable markings---all new ones!

All the more reason for collecting antique weapons that fire brass shells. .3040; .4570; are more than adequate for protection and defense.

I sure hope I didn't give some moron like Diane Feinstein or Chuckie Schumer a stupid idea. The stupider and idea, the more likely it is to become law.

And, once again, once you have the serial number you do...what? Why, you match it against a registration of owners.

All this might have a real chance if the registration of firearms hadn't been so universally and systematically abused in Australia, Britain, and Canada by those who ended up forcing the program to confiscation. If there were an iron-clad, enforceable guarantee that such a registration would never be so abused the NRA wouldn't get the traction it does. In fact, mendacity on this issue on the part of gun controllers in other countries has pretty much thwarted their counterparts' efforts in the U.S., and I'm hoping it will continue to do so.

STUPID STUPID STUPID. Duh.
I'm not a killer, but if I had to do the deed, I would first go to the police firing range at night and collect empty shell casings. Then I would use a REVOLVER which does not eject casings. Then ... you guessed it... I would toss the empty POLICE casings around the scene where I did it.

Too easy. Liberals don't understand reality. Idiots.

Good thing right wing extremists like me are not pscycho-killers. They are mostly black muslims nowadays.

What kind of morons write this stuff? Give me a device that can do that, and within minutes I can modify it to stamp garbage, or nothing on each shell casing.

Even stupid criminals are smarter than the losers making this crap up.

Obviously, these folks haven't heard of a brass catcher.

About $14.

All this crap is just so much hot air pushed by those who stand to make a buck from it. Only fools will believe this sh*t will ever solve any crime. The gun grabbers desparately want some sort of high tech or even low tech "solution" so they can get one of their big moves into law: a national GUN OWNER registry. They need such a list for the later confiscation attempt. I say attempt, because they are in for a big suprise when that day comes.

As an aside, I have to laugh at this idea of the imprinted serial number. I do a lot of reloading and pick up empty brass from many sources, including law enforcement ranges. (They don't use anything but factory for obvious reasons). After awhile, the cases I fire would have so many serial numbers on them that they would look like they'd been roughed up with sand paper! Then just multiply that by the thousands and the whole idea is just so much gibberish.

It's on the firing pin.

It can't be -- if it were, it wouldn't press the "stamp" into the casing via the pressure expansion of the case, as the manufacturer says.

Too stupid for discussion.

Why is this system running so slowly to day????

The manufacturer is developing and patenting lots of these schemes. The firing pin location is just one. They have tested the firing pin stamp through 30,000 cycles and it still looks fine.

It sounds more like they've bored a small hole through the chamber wall and then inserted a plug which has the "die" on the end. The brass case expands against the chamber wall, engraving the mark before the pressure drops and the extraction cycle commences.

IF that is what they did, they are going to end up sued into oblivion when their invention causes a catastrophic failure (KaBoom).

I don't care where they hide the thing... I can find it and obliterate the stamp. It's a foolish idea, akin to the "Safety Bullet" that was the topic of heated discussion here a month or two ago.
