Officials say Alabama camp not training terrorists

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Osama bin Laden is not running a training camp in Alabama, officials say.

An investigation has uncovered no evidence that a camp near Marion was used as a terrorist training facility.

ABC News reported Thursday night that the camp could have possible ties to bin Laden's terror network.

The Marion Camp, called Ground Zero USA is operated by a Tuscaloosa man.

Marion Police Chief Tony Buford said he was misquoted. Buford said the camp is used by police officers from Alabama and Louisiana for training that includes target practice.

A spokesman for Gov. Don Siegelman and Department of Public Safety officials said they are aware of the reports. But after conducting background investigations of the site they found no reason to be concerned.

Sniper Investigators Identify People of Interest

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Police investigating the Washington area sniper case were interested in talking to two people identified as John Allen Williams and John Malvo, CNN and Fox News reported on Wednesday.

Neither man was considered a suspect, the reports said. The men were connected to a 1990 Chevy Caprice bearing New Jersey license plate number NDA 21Z, according to both networks.

Williams, who is also known as Mohammad Williams, was reported to have been stationed at Fort Lewis, an Army base near Tacoma, in Washington state.

Federal and local authorities conducted a search of a backyard at a home in Tacoma on Wednesday.

Marion is about an hour's drive from here, and really in the middle of the sticks. There is a military institute there, (a boarding school for high school boys) and a bunch of country folks. I would hate to be a Muslim there tonight.
