I wish the media would quit presenting this guy as smart. You will start to get every Kook and left wing extremist out there with a rifle trying to get themselves on the news.

The fact is this guy is more likely to have the mentality of a six year old - the age at which kids argue that "My Dad is Taller Then Your Dad" or what ever other insignifcant thing they can point out to make themselves feel superior. He's trying to prove to his EGO that he is worthy by showing his markmanship. To say he is smart - Well I have yet to hear that they found note book paper with differential equations being solved anywhere near the crime scenes!

Most of the hits were at areas of low wage clerk jobs such as gas stations and retail outlets. This guy probably worked at places like this and got fired for imcompetence at all these places. I would check to see if there were any disgruntaled or incompetent employees fired at Franks in the last year. I would also check out the local firing Ranges - this guy had to practice somewhere.

Anything's possible. A cop would have the training, and could fit right in with the investigative team without suspicion, especially since the team now includes Maryland and Virginia police. Could be a former cop, someone disciplined recently. Could just as well be someone from Quantico, military snipers are trained there and it's right in the middle of all of these hits. Conjecture can go wild at this point. Nobody knows but the shooter.

Is it legal to shoot deer in Wisconsin with a .223? Judging from the size of some I've seen up there you need at least a .25 cal to bring them down anyway. Here in VA, I believe you need at least a .23 cal, legally that is.

"...I mean, imagine a few rednecks runnin around the middle east with there cabela's camoflauge and 30-06's with permission to shoot at will. Hell, you wouldnt even have to pay them, just airdrop some ammo, budwieser, and viena sausages in to them once a week and they'd be happy. The middle east will know what terrorism truely is when its deserts are litterd with budwieser cans and old couches..."

Hey, I resemble that remark

Why would any Islamofascist need to blow himself up, when he can just leave a package and be 10 miles away when the restaurant goes boom?

True.

At 7 meters or less a sidearm is a match for a rifle especially if the person armed with a rifle is trying to exit a dented vehicle after a collision. I would even be willing to drop to prone to engage a rifleman at up to 100 meters. If I had a clear shot without him drawing a bead on me I could put a couple into his/her/their torso(s) to at least give shooter something to think abvout besides getting a clear sight picture of my person.

Stay well - Stay safe - Stay armed - Yorktown

He has to know that picking up the money would expose him to capture

Does he necessarily need to "pick up" the money? Couldn't he demand a wire transfer, possibly to an off-shore bank account?

You would think stores in the area would start selling bullet proof garments such as rain coats and head gear.

Yes, and handguns start at .357. I use my deer hunting as an opportunity to test my self defense cartridges. Although I've never lost a deer shot with a .223, but they have never been clean kills. In my experience, all that "hydrostatic shock, tumbling bullet" rhetoric is a bunch of garbage. The .223, regardless of bullet type, is not a reliable round for man sized targets. I think the D.C. area murderer is using a higher power cartridge if he is getting this kind of kill ratio without head-shots.

CNN now reporting that the letter threatens children

. Yesterday CNN reported the note didn't actually demand money but only hinted. Today it's a ransom. The police are giving CNN a lot of power. They might as well read the note to us and stop the mystery because CNN is going to tell us in a dramatic hiss one piece at a time. CD

I disagree. the .223 works just fine on humans from a killing standpoint, especially at the modest ranges involved in these shootings.

You can't draw a parallel to battlefield performance beause most ground forces are wearing helmits plus some sort of "flack-jacket" or vest protection. plus their gear and heavy field clothing. The civilian targets have no protection at all. The .223 is clearly a killing round against the targets selected.

The last few days have demonstrated that Sept. 11 was part of a larger scheme by a terrorist organization pursuing a specific goal. Many intermingling factors are at play that would become even more confused if the world were to engage in a new war. The issue cannot be looked at in isolation of what is taking place in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, as well as in Kuwait. It is not in anyone's interests to undermine the stability of the world's biggest Muslim nation (and the fourth largest nation in the world). As far as Kuwait is concerned, preliminary investigations revealed the existence of sleeper cells closely influenced by what is taking place in Palestine. Moreover, can terrorism be divorced from the internal situation in Yemen? The Americans don't have to look far to see what might happen if they insist on pursuing their vendetta against Iraq. In the very heart of their capital city, a lone sniper has been picking off people at random, sowing panic, and bringing ordinary life to a standstill. I'm basing this assertion on my own experience shooting unarmored, 150 lb deer at the same ranges. The issue we were discussing is whether the murderer is in fact using a .223 cartride. I don't think he is.

Various news reports on Monday night and Tuesday morning said the note found Saturday demanded money to stop the attacks, threatened schoolchildren and was written in poor, broken English. Other reports said the caller to police disguised his voice and spoke with an indeterminate foreign accent.

More proof that this guy is not very intelligent!

Difference is that most Israelis are armed, unlike most Americans. The bombings start when Americans start carrying

But in the case of bombs, the remains could perhaps be used to identify the perp. And then a clear target for our vengenance could be established. The sniper style attacks deny us that clear focus of our anger. There are people who insist it must be Islamic terrorists (quite possible, due to the consistency of this attack with the previously known strategy of al Qaeda as discovered from captured materials). There are just as many people (moreso, in fact, if the majority of people believe as the so-called "experts" in the media) who insist it is a white male anglo-saxon beer-drinking NRA member with an evil assault weapon who plays video games and uses ozone-destroying chemicals in his gas-guzzling SUV which he recently traded in for a white van.

The fact is, we simply don't know. There is little evidence for either extreme (since there is little evidence at all), and the evidence that is available is being horribly misinterpreted by so-called "experts" in the media that are clueless. Some claim that the Tarot card indicates a lone nut, and that a Muslim would never use the phrase "I am God" (of course, I would probably believe that too if I hadn't heard Muslims say those very same words before) or use Tarot cards (where the "experts" got that opinion, I have no clue). Others claim that terrorists always take credit for their actions (these poor souls are lost in the 1970s, and somehow seem to be unaware that the face of international terrorism has changed dramatically since then, let alone the fact that al Qaeda hasn't taken credit for any of their actions yet, not even 9/11).

The fact that there is an al Qaeda cell near where these events happened, that several members of those cells are currently missing, and that a variant of this strategy shows up in al Qaeda training manuals suggests to me that it very easily could be Islamic terrorism. That this started happening right as al Qaeda made announcements of new offensive operations increases my suspicions. But since the al Qaeda manuals also mentioned targets that aren't being hit (like golf courses), there is still a bit of doubt in my mind.

Conversely, there are no shortage of mentally deranged individuals in the United States (a glance at certain members of Congress and those who elect them pretty much proves that postulate). Some have suggested that this is a military sniper. If it is (the evation techniques suggest someone with such training), it almost certainly isn't a United States military sniper (whose rifles are zeroed for 300 meters and who are capable of consistently making shots at that range. Plus, if it was a US sniper the round being used would almost certainly be 7.62 instead of 5.56). It might be someone with European military training, however, where standards of marksmanship are less demanding.

I would almost prefer a suicide bomber. While the damage might be greater, at least we would have the knowledge that the bomber would not escape justice.

An SUV such an Escalade, Excursion, Tahoe etc would easily be sufficient to stop any such shooter inside or outside his vehicle.

These are relatively heavy and possibly more difficult to accelerate? Would a Mercedes, BMW or Volvo sedan (plus whatever the American equivalents of those are) be optimal for interception? For pure pursuit, maybe just a motorcycle...

The only real problem I have with that theory is that a Muslim fundamentalist would never say "I am God".

Sorry, but I've heard Muslims say this. In certain contexts, it is not blasphemy; no more than when a Christian might say "know that I AM the Lord your God" when quoting or paraphrasing scripture.

Odds are the guy's a home grown garden variety psychopath ...

Well, we now know the 3-page letter is 'poorly-worded' and when he called, even though he tried to disguise his voice, he spoke in 'very broken English' with an 'undetermined foreign accent.' So, there's your 'home-grown psychopath.'
