Your post 2040 is correct. LEOs weren't the only ones told however.

That was my understanding as well, from what my coworker said. Media has been aware of the contents of the letter for some time but has been told, either unofficially or through a gag order, not to release the information.

If the National Guard is called out....what exactly are they supposed to do?....Escort children into school, pump gas, escort people in and out of stores?...will they be armed?....to me they will be more targets.

Question wrt the money that the sniper is supposedly asking for...I know some people have said that AQ doesn't ask for money, but didn't the AQ members who kidnapped and murdered Daniel Pearl ask for ransom money? I seem to remember them asking for money even though they'd probably already killed him at that point.

NewsMax (I know, not always reliable) is reporting the letter from the sniper threatened extreme violence and WUSA-TV's reporter David Statter says "the genie is out of the bottle".

What an incredibly poor choice of words.

I am not lacking faith in the LEAs. And I have tried to qualify most of my posts (but I must admit, at my age, I cannot remember everything I have posted, pretty sad actually) with "if what we know is all they have" or some such statement, or "assuming the LEAs have more info" (not exact quotes). I agree, we don't know everything. I was speaking in terms of "the sniper demanded they read that part of the letter" stuff. I agree, the LEAs are walking a fine line. But, I just feel that they are showing an extreme weakness. They are showing that they have no real clue. Maybe they do have a clue. Maybe they are not extremely weak. If so, why are they showing that. They are not instilling a lot of confidence in this one simpleton, yours truely. I don't feel what I felt when a day or two after the 9/11 horror, when President Bush took the floor of the House Chambers and said, we won't rest, and neither will you. We are coming after you, and you will pay. I just don't feel that. I want to feel that. I want that confidence. I want to hear the coach say, "we are going to win. The chips may seem down, but we will win." I don't want to hear the coach say, "I hope we win."

Perception is reality. Like it or not, (and I hope none will take offense at this, please understand the context) this is a game. This guy is playing us. A game for our lives, mind you, but still a game. Perception is reality. Instill confidence. Get one for the Gipper.

I know; the money angle has got me, too. I don't remember if Daniel Pearl's captors did ask for ransom before he was killed. Obviously they knew they would never get it. Then why ask? And why ask now? Is this in some handbook and they can't skip "Rule Number 7?" There is no way we are giving them the money. Although if the killers are stupid enough there may be a way for LE to try to flush them out somehow?

Do you recall how long ago the ME type deported or what typ activity caused him to be deported ? In what capacity was he employed ? Civil Engineer ? Architect ? Contractor ?
