Truthfully - I think we all could use a good, hearty laugh right now.
Whole lotta wooded area from Maryland to southern Virginia. Even if you took care only to post people in sections off major highways, there probably aren't enough cops in the region to do such a thing. Besides, if you staked out THIS type of area or THAT type of area, the shooter would just change his MO. Sitting around waiting for the guy and hoping that you've anticipated where, in his very broad range, he'll hit next is a useless reactive tactic, IMO.

Growing Up In The 50's
Were you a kid in the Fifties or earlier? Everybody makes fun of our childhood! Comedians joke. Grandkids snicker. Twenty-somethings shudder and say "Eeeew!" But was our childhood really all that bad?
Judge for yourself:
In 1953:
The US population was less than 150 million - yet you knew more people then, and knew them better.
And that was good.
The average annual salary was under $3,000 - yet our parents could put some of it away for a rainy day and still live a decent life.
And that was good.
A loaf of bread cost about 15 cents - but it was safe for a five-year-old to skate to the store and buy one.
And that was good
. Prime time meant I Love Lucy, Ozzie and Harriett, and Lassie - so nobody'd ever heard of ratings or filters.
And that was good.
We didn't have air-conditioning - so the windows stayed up and half a dozen mothers ran outside when you fell off your bike.
And that was good.
Your teacher was either Miss Matthews or Mrs. Logan or Mr. Adkins - but not Ms. Becky or Mr. Dan.
And that was good.
The only hazardous material you knew about - was a patch of grassburrs around the light pole at the corner.
And that was good.
Most families needed only one job - meaning Mom was home when school let out.
And that was good.
You loved to climb into a fresh bed - because sheets were dried on the clothesline.
And that was good.
The 50's People generally lived in the same hometown with their relatives -so "child care" meant grandparents or aunts and uncles.
And that was good.
TV was in black-and-white, but all outdoors was in glorious color.
And that was certainly good.
Your Dad knew how to adjust everybody's carburetor - and the Dad next door knew how to adjust all the TV knobs.
And that was very good.
Your grandma grew snap beans in the back yard and chickens behind the garage.
And that was definitely good.
And just when you were about to do something really bad, chances were you'd run into your Dad's high school coach, or the nosy old lady from up the street, or your little sister's piano teacher, or somebody from church. ALL of whom knew your parents' phone number And YOUR first name.
And even THAT was good!

We pray the madness stops...we pray we can give our kids and grandkids the childhood alot of us had. We pray we remain strong. We are grateful that we can remember a safer time.....
Fortunately, I work at home and I'm supposed to be in front of the computer all day long! :)
But I will be going through withdrawal as I travel all day tomorrow.
Old Rules. That doctrine was developed before body armor became so cheap and readily available. The cops may be living in the past but you don't kill bad guys any more with body shots from a handgun--the round is too slow to penatrate. For self defense, you either have a 12 guage and shoot for the body mass or if you have a handgun, you have enough practice to put the round in his left eyeball.
I am even coming around to the view that my Ruger .22 is the most effective handgun I own--I can knock the head off a fast moving mouse with a single shot at 25 feet every time. If forced to choose between a body shot with a .357 and the eyeball with the .22, the .22 might be a better choice if the bad guy is wearing body armor.
I also think it's very telling that he attacked someone on a bus. He's already managed to shut down the schools, empty out shopping centers. Is he sending a message that commuters are next? Is he trying to frighten the public so they'll be afraid to venture out to work on buses and trains? Afraid to leave their children? I keep thinking about that tarot card that surfaced in the arab newspaper last week -- the one with the words "curfew" written out in bullets.

I must be sick!! LOL
On 9-11, ALL of my "kids" (my niece, my nephew, and my two stepdaughters) called me by 10 A.M. and wanted to know EVERYTHING I knew about the entire world in ten minutes.
Now they don't think I'm a nut; however, my nephew has said on numerous occasions that he will have a computer monitor at my funeral so "all your friends can be there." :-)
