I appreciate your kind words and those of the others who replied. The odds are remote and I'm sure his wife would have called by now if it was him. But as I said, even the slightest bit of doubt has given me a different perspective on these events. I can imagine what must flash through people's minds when their spouse goes out for groceries or they are standing there pumping gas. They are telling themselves not be paranoid and foolish, but in the back of their mind there is a little gnawing feeling.
HELP!
Are they OK
To: Miss Marple
No, what I'm angry about is that we might not solve all the problems by profiling our KNOWN enemy amongst us, but we sure as heck could start putting SEVERE pressure on THAT problem (ME Terror), even if this IS NOT ME terror...what if it IS? Any and EVERY cell needs to be sniffed out NOW so that ME types don't get carried away with similar feats all over America. Look at what's going on in America..RIGHT NOW! Look at the highways...and we don't even KNOW jack squat. AND, IF WE DID know something CONCRETE, and they CAN'T STOP HIM/THEM, then WHY IN THE WORLD DON'T THE AUTHORITIES TELL US EXACTLY WHAT IS CONCRETE SO THAT THE CITIZENS CAN TRY STOPPING THIS NUT.
The current approach is bass ackwards to everything American, besides being totally ineffective and ENCITING more of the same...

"I don't care how fast they set up a block, the killer is gone in 3-4 minutes. Forget the major high-ways. They are out the back door and gone."
That is what I'm thinking, too. He is cool and calm, knows he is going have a couple of minutes of immediate shock to take advantage of and he is long gone before they can even say roadblock.
To: McLynnan
"I happen to know that in ten minutes at 60mph you can be 60 miles away."
really? what do you think MPH stands for?

It's the prinicpal It's the wah?

Folks, don't forget the Revolutionary War was fought against a foreign enemy on our shores. Yes, after July 4, 1776 the British were foreigners.

I think ELF is a fair guess, too...
To: McLynnan
that in ten minutes at 60mph you can be 60 miles awayTry 10 miles, unless you're fleeing in a 737.
To: McLynnan
My point is that in ten minutes at a fast speed the sniper has eluded the roadblocks that came 10+ minutes later. With that I am taking my non-fuctioning brain to bed. Maybe so, maybe not. Someday the perp will run into bad luck. I do think, however the eluding massive manhunts thakes planning and organization. I think it puts the crime oustside the bounds on Columbine style kids, crazed individuals, and most other "typical" serial killers.

"I'll bet you $50 that guy on the ground was NOT cuffed because he was driving a white van." I agree. They could have found his murdered girlfriend in the back...or anything like that.

Yeah, and the innocent victims who'd be shot surely would be ok with it because it's constitutional. /sarcasm
There isn't an easy answer.

What would you do to catch the sniper? What would you do as an alternative to the car search? Some of the earlier posts said they had a tag number. Who is this tag registered to? If it's registered to Abdul, then why search granny's car?
Colonel Craig Roberts (former SWAT commander, I believe) was on the Alex Jones show the other night, and he suggested the widespread use of unmarked police vehicles (intelligently placed) to block off traffic where the shootings occur.
Of course, they would have to be positioned beforehand, which would be no easy task given the geographic area to cover. A starting point would be those locations which many escape routes as the shooter appears to prefer these locations. Volunteers could help out the local police here.
I don't think that random or universal car searches will help catch the terrorists, since terrorists are used to getting around these tactics in places like Israel.

[Law enforcement are stopping and handcuffing all drivers in white vans that fit a description in the current Washington area sniper attacks. ]
Why not just go through the Federal Gun Registry and confiscate everyone's guns? Oh. That's right. They don't have the registry finished yet.

AND HE SPEAKS PROPER ENGLISHLOL! Moose's dis and dats and flustrated idee-ers has been driving me up a wall since day one.
I heard this guy when he was on the radio the first day and thought who was this boob? Heart fell when I found out "this boob" was in charge of my security.

It looks like the FBI is on the case.
To: abner
They're kinda like Texas Rangers, but with refined manners.
Genteel, but no-nonsense bloodhounds.
To: patriciaruth
ROFLMAO.........you got it!
To: rintense
Really. You notice they were quick to say WHERE the shot came from tonight. Maybe those Rummy planes are helping? :)
To: edwin hubble
Local TV witnesses report they are all "OK" with the searches and stops. and "Glad they are being thorough in trying to catch the sniper". Good thing Girlshortstop and Mulder weren't trying to drive to Maryland.
