Carr Brothers Trial Daily Update- Lone Survivor Tells Her Story on Day 2.
The only surviving victim of a multiple murder says she thought about grabbing that gun...but realized she wouldn't get it in time. The lone survivor and the main witness for the prosecution, known by her initials "H.G.", testified Tuesday in the trial of Jonathan and Reginald Carr. They're accused of raping, robbing and shooting H.G. and her four friends.
H.G.--holding back any emotions--told jurors it started like any other night. She left her apartment in south Wichita around eight and headed for her boyfriend, Jason Befort's home. She says they watched TV for awhile and had just gone to bed, when the bedroom door busted open. "They told everyone to get undressed and one by one we took off our clothes and we continued to lay in bed."H.G. says the three men--Aaron Sander, Bradley Heyka and Jason Befort were forced into the closet. H.G. and Heather Muller were taken into the hallway and forced to perform sexual acts on each other--after that she says the men were brought out of the closet one-by-one and forced to try and have sex with the women. H.G. says she and Heather Muller were also raped by the intruders before and after each victim was taken to an A-T-M machine near 21st and Webb Road. "They wanted to know who had money and none of us did then they asked who had A-T-M cards and all of us raised our hands as we were laying down."
H.G. says she asked one of the men--"are you going to shoot us." The first time he said no--the second time he said not yet. "He said don't worry I'm not going to shoot you yet, and then I was directed to kneel on all fours where he raped me."
The only emotions in the courtroom came from the victim's family as H.G. testified. She showed little emotion on the stand during two hours of testimony on Tuesday. And it's not over--on Wednesday, H.G. will also tell jurors what happened in that northeast Wichita soccer field, where all five victims were shot execution style.KWCH provides a live feed from the courtroom on Cox cable channel 52. Parts are also broadcast on KFDI radio. Much of the testimony on the first day focused on the surviving victim-- a young woman who was shot in the head along with her four friends. Naked-- she was able to walk more than a half mile, in sub-freezing temperatures to find help.
Jurors listened to the man who opened his door that early december morning, and heard the 911 call from his home. Suffering from hypothermia, a gunshot wound to the head, and severe frostbite--the victim known as "h.g." trys to explain what she went through during the last three hours.
"These 2 men broke into our house.... and they executed my four friends and I've been shot in the head and I need an ambulance."Jurors also heard emotional testimony from a Sedgwick County sheriff's deputy, who was holding back tears when he described finding the bodies of 25-year-old Heather Muller, 26-year-old Jason Befort, 27-year-old Bradley Heyka and 29-year-old Aaron Sander.
Jurors did get a feel as to what kind of defense Jonathan and Reginald Carr will present. Both brothers are pointing at each other. Reginald's attorneys also told jurors the evidence points to Jonathan and an unidentified third man.
Attorneys estimate just the first phase of the trial, determining whether the Carrs are guilty will take at least six weeks
