Yeah, I was afraid if I said "yaw" nobody would know what I meant . . . maybe think it was a sailboat or a disease . . . ;-)

But that's one characteristic that makes the .223 unsuitable for anything much bigger than a varmint (spoils too much meat). Other than fine-tuning the custom stuff for prairie dogs and (alternatively) blasting away at tin cans, there are better calibers on the market (actually there are better calibers for varminting). That's another reason why this perp is not a reloader or a sport shooter, I think he just used the most available small military caliber.

I've heard it reported (NBC) that it was a "high velocity" rifle. Gotta love these dingbats.

Of course, they're displaying any rifle they can find that chambers a .223...gotta demonize those black guns and "sniper rifles"...and anyone that owns one.

. . . there's no way this b!@#$!#$ has had the time to police for brass.

That may be a second purpose for the box on the back of the truck; I haven't heard any reports of anyone hearing shots being fired. That box may be serving as a live-in suppressor/brass catcher. There is nothing to tie the discovered brass to these shootings. Could even have been fired from a different rifle and tossed as a red herring.

...but I'd wait to see the yahoo that designated those 22-250 round for elephant to kill one first before I tried it.

At the last gunshow that I attended, a vendor was advertising his stunguns as defense against muggers, dogs and bears. I asked if he had any photos of the guy that tried that with a bear...he didn't. :)

If she lives, this case will be great testimony to the absolute and unequivocal need for all American citizens to be within thirty minutes of any trauma capable ER. The national infrastructure in trauma response is lagging at a time of war. The Administration needs to integrate trauma response under Homeland Security. The failure of the Democratic Party to consider the Homeland Security Bill in the US Senate has put our citizens at risk. Tommy Thompson and Tom Ridge should direct staff to do a national response plan to mass casulties. This civilian response plan should not be dependent on the US military resources (because those resources should not be diverted from support of combat operations, though could be used as a backup for less acute needs). In order to save lives, individuals must reach definitive care within 30 minutes of injury. This permits the life of the individual to be saved within the "golden hour".

The Democratic Party's push to socialize healthcare has undermined the national security. HMO profiteering has caused a decrease in health care capacity. Hospitals have not received adequate funding to develop full-services in most communities of less than 100,000 people. Yet, these communities often have substantial governmental or military related activities (just look at ANY community surrounding ANY military base).

The Democrats need to get out of the way in the US Senate. If Senator Byrd's perseverations are beginning to border on "outrageous" because it is "wrong" to slow deliberations on the safety of the citizenry.

These could be had for under $400 were a AR-15 (or variant), Thompson Contendor etc. would run over $800.... ,

So why do you think the shooters are cheapskates? If they do turn out to be IslamaNazies, they have all the Saudi and Iraqi oil money they need. I'd think they'd have the best heavy barrel bolt action they can afford. If they planned to shoot from various vehicles, not just the truck, they might have more than one gun, or might choose one of the handguns chambered for .223 just to have the flexibility. Even in a car, the handgun would be easier to conceal, on the floorboard covered by a blanket or some papers for example, than a rifle.

I can't shoot small furry creatures (ok ok guys... call me a wimp)...

That's OK, just so long as you don't want to use the power of the State to prevent the rest of use from doing so. I don't much care for small furry creatures myself, for eating I mean. I prefer the feathered ones, and have never hunted the larger furry creatures, nor do I have any particular desire to.

wild turkey is good. Pheasant is ok too. Squirrel and ground hog don't sound that appetizing. I'm sure the SpecOps guys are laughing at me. :)

The SpecOps guys will pass me a few ants and get me a garnish of tree fungus!

Squirrel is o.k. in Brunswick Stew. About 1/3 squirrel, 1/3 rabbit, and 1/3 chicken. Otherwise I can't stand the stuff. It's hard to clean too . . . gotta make sure you get out the little scent glands at the leg joints or it will taste pretty foul.

Give me a nice whitetail deer any day of the week.

Well tree rat is not bad (ask my dog!, but I've had it too) Bunny isn't too bad either, but as I said, I prefer pheasant, quail and such. Never had, that I recall, wild turkey, duck or goose, but I imagine, depending on what they've been eating, that they are pretty good. Bison is good, but I'd hate to have to clean and haul one of those myself. The Indians had a whole party to help with that, as well killing the thing in the first place. (I think they made the women do the worst of it, fat chance on getting Mrs. Gato, PhD, to do that!, although she would cook it, since she likes it too.)

The Spec ops, or even AF Survival Instructor types, would feed you the eyeballs. good source of salt I'm told.

Can someone explain how the DC Metro police, FBI, Secret Service, and various other law enforcement agencies can not locate a truck the size pictured?

I agree, that's the big question here....

what's a 223 cal weapon used in?

M16 or AR15. Army weapon. Been around since late 1960s. Used extensively in Viet Nam. You see our military guys carryinf them in today's airports. They're probably without ammo though.

It's a baby, compared to some others...

Yes, but it is light, accurate, and high firing rate. Does a good job of killing people.

Greta Van Susteren just stated that we should all be on the watchout for people who spend a lot of time practicing shooting or have some sort of obsession with guns because thats the tip the police need. Nice eh?

If they were series, I'd be on a Wanted Poster in the post office. That reminds me, I have a really cool jpeg from a 1950s ad that I'd like to get on this thread. It's on my C: drive though. And I don't know how to get it up on this site.

You've got to upload the .jpg to another website (other FReepers can make recommendations), then link the image to your message here via HTML. Search for the "HTML Bootcamp" thread for tips.

As to your point... yeah, they could wallpaper the entire nation with the new wanted posters. Greta needs a good slap upside her head. Maybe it'd straighten out her mouth, eh? ;-)

When I was young we used to mow through squirrels during their season. Squirrel and dumplings Mmm Mmm... Our dachshund got ahold of some one night though and turned out to be allergic to it, swelled up like a ballon.

One of the funniest things I saw at the grandparents (moms side) was my Grandpap searching through the freezer one day.
Mom walks in and asks what he's looking for.
Grandpap: "Couple a squirrel heads I had in here..."
Mom: "Oh, I threw then out, what were you keeping them for?"
Grandpap : "(muttering) Good gracious, whats the world coming to, woman throws out perfectly good squirrel heads..." "I was gonna EAT them, they were a TREAT!"

needless to say, I've eaten quite a few critters, I'm definitly a PETA member...
