FBI: Maryland shootings fit no category Agency profilers can see no motive other than terrorism

WASHINGTON – It's not gang-banging. Or spree-shooting. Or armed robbery. And it's not a serial killer.

So what would motivate two assailants to randomly target five victims in a Maryland suburb, and possibly a sixth in D.C., killing each with a single shot from a high-powered rifle?

The calculated shootings, which took place Wednesday and Thursday, are like none that federal investigators have seen.

"If some sicko just wants to go out and essentially assassinate a bunch of random people – and he's not a terrorist – it's almost like a new category" of crime, said a veteran FBI agent.

The perpetrators aren't spree shooters, FBI profilers have concluded.

Typically, spree shooters are loners who snap one day and fire away until police appear and they come to their own violent end.

They typically seek revenge on an employer, such as the post office, or fellow students at a school. They come to the scene loaded with weapons, and take a stand, spraying victims with bullets.

But in this case, two men in a white van or "box truck" did not spray bullets, but picked targets, trained a rifle, or rifles, on their victims and aimed to kill, like trained assassins.

"In a spree shooting, there are usually a lot of people wounded," said one agent. "The shooter is not really taking time to aim."

"This is much more cold and calculated than the typical spree shooting," he said. "The victims were not wounded."

What's more, the sniper, or snipers, didn't take a stand, but sped off to avoid capture.

"This is different – they've taken great steps to avoid being apprehended," he added.

Authorities are said to have a description of the shooters but are not releasing it. They've reviewed video tapes from security cameras at some of the businesses where the shootings took place.

"The idea of terrorism is to spread fear," said one law enforcement officer. "If that's what they wanted to do, they've succeeded, because there's a lot of fear in the Washington area right now."

Happiness, as we say in the trade, is a belt-fed weapon

I would also agree here. :^) There is a certain "intimidation" factor that comes from a large-bore, belt-fed weapon. Visions of that scene in "Predator" where the soldier literally mows down the forest with that modern-day gattling gun come to mind. I know, its only a movie. But what a cool scene.

Calmly (physical and mental calmness is necessary for good shooting) transcending the oldest of man's prohibitions is something else entirely.

Not a problem if you have allowed evil to take over your thoughts and actions.

Belt-feds are FUN. A .50 cal is almost the most fun you can have with your clothes on... An M-60 is OK... but jams a lot. I have never had the chance at the M-19, but I'd sure love one. When we get rid of NFA-34 and GCA-68 and all their variants, I plan to plunk down my bux for both Ma Deuce and the M-19... and p-u-l-lenty of ammo for both. Then go way out in the boonies and have a ball!

I found the initial thread when it was 20 minutes old. After monitoring for a few minutes,I saw a second confirmation and called my Va affiliate office.

I told my counterpart I did not want to panic them, but that there was a situation in their area. I asked how close they were to the new "possible sniper action".They were less than 20 miles. I explained what I had read, and asked her not to panic. She didnt. She was upset, did not panic and thanked me for letting them know. How else would they have found out?

I did a Eunice in this case.I have info. I am not sure of the value, but I want to share what I know to those who may be affected by the information.I did not want to induce panic, I wanted them to know what was going on in their area.I pray that one of my other affiliated offices would clue me in if they stumbled upon info that they "heard" was happening in my area. The media is not going to broadcast useable info if it interferes with popular programs.

There is a concerted effort of downplaying breaking news by media news outlets related to the "war on terrorism".Many of us will die needlessly while the Feds, media, and the politicians play bureacratic games in an obscene juggle for personal power pretending we are not at war.

I implore everyone to share the information they stumble upon to those who may be affected immediately.Do so calmly, use common sense and avoid panic.

A calm "heads up" to someone is not the same thing as spreading panicky rumours.

Apparantly, in this case, there were not additional multiple victims involved in Va.Like Eunice Stone, I do not regret making the call.Nor do I chide my far away friends who call me to make sure I am aware a hurricane is threatening my area.I know they do so out of genuine concern, not any morbid wish for inducing panic.

Thank God for the internet, and bless FReepers everywhere!

Indeed. A lovely thing it is, to be sure. A soft-sided vehicle like that, though, should have at the least a M-19 or two mounted behind the canvas... and I want a few cases of ammo thrown in or no deal!

It is unusual when you can't find any info about any description, any cars, any thing ... what's up???

You'd think with three agencies involved that there would be some kind of activity...maybe they are waiting until Saturday 9 AM to make some announcement when all of America can watch (and preempt the Sat AM cartoons?).

My feeling is that this was just a practice run for the main event... .223 makes kevlar pretty much, irrelevant doesn't it?

A tune up of the optics I suspect.
I am nervous about election day.

with justice and dod claiming a minimum membership of 60 thousand of al queida alone... I am guessing that MOST of them are here... 30 thousand... andof ththose, I would guess half are trained with highpowered hit rifles.
15 thousand... in america.

the speed of the shots within moments of each other... tells me that these guys were probably NOT firing from over 100 yards... and were mobile.

If these WERE terrorists, they would be watching to gauge the police response to such tactics and form plans for those responses. Our regular cops are NOT trained to respond properly. Our swat team types aren't either. They have been busy setting up hit jobs on cornered kidnappers and such... and have NO experience dealing with paramilitary types... hiding in the shadows.

We needed homeland defence six months ago. Daschle will be held responsible for murdered americans through his partisan inaction... we need to go active on THEM before they can go active on us... but thanks to daschle, we wont be able to. Tell your kids, wife and parents how much you love them... every day.

God bless America and save us from the liberal lefties...

"They need to check for patterns in the shootings this may very well be a cult of some kind "

Somebody did. It's an inverted cross.

The Sherrif gave a brief announcement that they had 4 matches including the one in DC. There is another thread on the DC shooting.

So who trained them? And who were the victims? What's Lon Horiuchi up to these days? These guys are using a "high-powered" rifle chambered in .223. I'm pretty sure Lon uses a .308 but somebody should see if he hasn't snapped...

"How could this have happened? I thought the Maryland gun laws were real tough."

They're working on it. And in anticipation, I've already got my AR-15, M-1A, etc., and lots of ammo.

:)
