FBI: Maryland shootings fit no category Agency profilers can see no motive other than terrorism

WASHINGTON – It's not gang-banging. Or spree-shooting. Or armed robbery. And it's not a serial killer.

So what would motivate two assailants to randomly target five victims in a Maryland suburb, and possibly a sixth in D.C., killing each with a single shot from a high-powered rifle?

The calculated shootings, which took place Wednesday and Thursday, are like none that federal investigators have seen.

"If some sicko just wants to go out and essentially assassinate a bunch of random people – and he's not a terrorist – it's almost like a new category" of crime, said a veteran FBI agent.

The perpetrators aren't spree shooters, FBI profilers have concluded.

Typically, spree shooters are loners who snap one day and fire away until police appear and they come to their own violent end.

They typically seek revenge on an employer, such as the post office, or fellow students at a school. They come to the scene loaded with weapons, and take a stand, spraying victims with bullets.

But in this case, two men in a white van or "box truck" did not spray bullets, but picked targets, trained a rifle, or rifles, on their victims and aimed to kill, like trained assassins.

"In a spree shooting, there are usually a lot of people wounded," said one agent. "The shooter is not really taking time to aim."

"This is much more cold and calculated than the typical spree shooting," he said. "The victims were not wounded."

What's more, the sniper, or snipers, didn't take a stand, but sped off to avoid capture.

"This is different – they've taken great steps to avoid being apprehended," he added.

Authorities are said to have a description of the shooters but are not releasing it. They've reviewed video tapes from security cameras at some of the businesses where the shootings took place.

"The idea of terrorism is to spread fear," said one law enforcement officer. "If that's what they wanted to do, they've succeeded, because there's a lot of fear in the Washington area right now."

Possibility #3) the SOBs are under surveillance to see who they talk to, don't want the public calling in the cops and causing other bad guys to rabbit

Agreed.

Of course, if it was Timothy McVeigh, smoke would have been pouring from the CNN control room as they ran his photo 24x7x52. Too bad for the libs that he was excecuted. They could have blamed a lot more on him. Maybe even 9-11.

The skin of the average "box" truck can be penetrated easily by the Girand's 30-06 ammo. An average sidearm, however, most likely will do little more than dent the shell unless it is very thin sheet metal like the outer skin of a car door.

Even 30-06 will deflect slightly going through the door--enough to miss.

Where can I get one of those Gustav rifles? :^)

Consult your nearest friendly international arms dealer, and bribe an honest diplomat to sign the end-user certificates (definition of honest: when he's bought, he STAYS bought :o)

HAR! I get it now! Let's see...connect . the . dots ...

Way back in 1775 there was this guy who went to a Freemasons meeting. Although sworn to secrecy he revealed the true agenda of the group of blacksmiths, carpenters and politicians....lol....

At that meeting they decided, that they - or at least their descendants - would one day rule the world. Their first course of action was to concoct a scheme where a moose and squirrel (code name Rocky and Bullwinkle) would overtake the public political mindset...

At least now, we know who "they" are!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think he means finding your target in the van, not sure. But the Gustav, being like an RPG, would take out the whole van... but so would the M-79 "blooper" 40mm grenade launcher. They are like a huge single barrel shotgun and the round (spin-armed for safety of the shooter) travels at such a slow speed and is so large you can actually SEE it going downrange with your naked eyes... What I want for my Jeep is one of the belt-fed 40mm guns along with Ma Deuce, the M-2 Browning .50 cal belt-fed gun....

Happiness, as we say in the trade, is a belt-fed weapon

Depends on the angle of entry, of course. But I tend to agree, its much better to have the bad guy out in the open if you're going to stop him.

Perhaps a better tack would be to try and disable the vehicle and call the cops. Trucks will run on flat tires but not very fast or very far. Also, engines have vital fluids and, if you have the firepower, the engine and its attachments (like the radiator) can be targets as well.

As for the Gustav, I suspect that I won't be getting one in this lifetime unless dot-gov assigns me one. Which, of course isn't likely as I'm a civvy who'se a bit too old to join the service.

they are ex-cons who took up "the religion of peace" and were released on liberal parole.....

It is becoming clear that the significant emerging threat is constituted by terrorists who have been here for some time and have gained US citizenship through the incredibly incompetent and inept INS processes as well as weak-minded disfunctional US citizens who are recruited to the "cause".

FYI:
IRA link to PLO examined in hunt for deadly sniper
By Sean Rayment The Telegraph

(Filed: 10/03/2002 [bvw note: that's MARCH 10th euro-date style]])

BRITISH security officials are looking into suspicions that a crack sniper who killed 10 Israeli soldiers and civilians on the West Bank a week ago might be an IRA gunman.

Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, has asked European and American security agencies if they can help to identify the killer, who shot dead seven soldiers and three civilians in 25 minutes using 25 bullets from a bolt-action rifle.

The sniper was hidden in trees on a hill overlooking an army checkpoint near the Jewish settlement of Ofra. When he fled, he left behind his weapon, which is standard IRA practice.

The attack last Sunday shocked the Israeli Defence Force. Mossad believes that the sniper could be an IRA agent or special forces-trained contract killer.

The Sunday Telegraph understands that British security officials have been checking whether any known IRA members capable of carrying out the shootings or training others to do so have gone abroad in recent weeks.

One security official said: "To be able to get 10 kills in 25 minutes using 25 rounds without being spotted means this guy is good. He could be a former member of the IRA; he could be a former member of a special forces unit. He is clearly well trained."

The IRA is known to have links with the Palestine Liberation Organisation and other Middle East armed groups, and at least one member of the IRA's army council is known to speak Arabic. The security official added: "Many IRA men and women have been trained in camps in the Middle East and north Africa."

Training and tactical exchanges between the IRA and other terrorist groups is not unusual. Last year, four alleged IRA members were arrested in Columbia and charged with terrorist offences after allegedly training members of the Revolutionary Forces of Columbia (Farc) guerrillas.

Last October, a European security conference in France concluded that new links had been created and old ones regenerated between the IRA, Basque separatists and Farc.

British security forces are well aware of the IRA's sniping skills. During the 1990s, nine soldiers and policemen were murdered by snipers in South Armagh.

For sure. And wouldn't it be a grand thing to be using to clear the road ahead during rush hour? As long as you have real tough tires for driving over the scrap metal in the road!

What I REALLY want for commuting (and terrorist-hunting, as an incidental) is one of those German Fox NBC Recon vehicles. We got some from them during Gulf LiveEx 1. When you get tired of driving over the top of other cars on the road, you just head for the nearest river, lower the bow-plane and the 2 props in the back and swim away!

I was thinking along the lines of a mini- Phalanx for the truck. Wouldn't have no problem with fast lane hogs anymore.

Yes, that Gustav would be the weapon of choice, but it certainly isn't available to the general public. It would also be a heck of a lot of fun to shoot.

I'd also enjoy a full-auto weapon. Cripes, dad got to lug around a BAR in WW-II, the lucky guy. I don't think that he considered himself lucky at the time. Germans seemed to train their Mausers on the gun that went "rattattattatta..." rather than the ones that just went "bang".

Anyway, folks are destined to use the cards that they are dealt - which around these parts generally means handguns on the road and medium-bore rifles at home. It means we have a fighting chance against these types of thugs, but only if we can find them before they target us. And, if we can catch them in the act or sufficiently along in the act as to be easily construed in the court of law as a threat. Its better than nothing by a long shot, but certainly not as good as it could or should be.
