Couldn't possiby be that the SBA is throwing money their way, could it?

You'd think that these entrepreneurs would be a natural GOP constituency, seeing the DemocRAT nanny-state regulations as an impediment to their businesses' growth. On the other hand, maybe they just want to jump onto the RATs' crony capitalism gravy train.

They are going to RESEARCH this to find out why?????
SHEESH.....like someone else said, because the government gives them MONEY TO START BUSINESSES......and not to WHITE guys!!!!!

With the vast majority of loans and set-asides for minority owned businesses, this is just incredible!

Couldn't possiby be that the SBA is throwing money their way, could it? Of course it could.
More importantly, however, what does it imply for the state of racism and the "oppressed black man" in this country? What ground is left for demagogues like Jackson and Sharpton.

That is a very low remark, rather unbecoming for someone bearing a noble (screen)name.

They may have a point, but it depends whether hold-ups and carjackings are defined as a "business". David Duke?

Bingo- Being a "minority" or "women owned" business has many advantages over a "white male" owned business. For example- funds are avaialble for startup costs that are not available to white men. Low interest loans, tax deductions and exemption from even environmental regualtions that whites are not exempt from. Not to mention outright preference in the awarding of most state contracts and all federal contracts. Of course their are ways around this- like making a minority or woman the nominal owner of the company or a significant shareholder. Such "strawmen" owners are more and more frequent and front for white male owners. The most blatant example of this is Fidelity Investments- the largest privatley held investment firm in the country started by Ned Johnson. It is now technically listed as a "woman" owned business with his daughter as the nominal "owner."

You'd think that these entrepreneurs would be a natural GOP constituencyThere are a fair number that are, already. Of course, with as many of us still "in the closet," as it were, we'll be pretty hard pressed to see any correlation easily...

'Bout time y'all started coming out of the closet!

Yes. The SBA and other organizations assisting in enterpenuership devote more time and momey to "minorities". Not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make it more difficult to get assistance if you do not fit the category (at least in Florida). Being a small businees owner here, I can attest to that. But I did not apply for, or want, any financial asistance via the SBA or Govt.; I funded my work entirely on my own.

Another example is Spectra Communications/CenturyTel. When GTE sold CenturyTel some of their telephone facilities in Missouri, CenturyTel could not afford it because they did not have the mulah. No problem. They made up a front company called Spectra and made an african-american the owner. They were able to get the funds.
One year later, Spectra is history and CenturyTel is the owner.

African-American men and other minorities may be more likely to start their own business because they may face a tough time finding jobs compared with their white counterparts. Well, at least AP avoided interjecting implied racism until the last sentence.
Interesting they never bothered to examine the possiblility of preferential treatment in landing government start-up money. Nor was the likelihood of government set-asides mentioned. Is this just a typically slanted AP piece or rather an incomplete work by a boob?
