Mother to surrender in videotaped beating of girl
09/21/2002
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - A woman seen on a department store security tape punching her 4-year-old daughter plans to surrender Saturday, her attorney said Friday night.
Police have been searching for Madelyne Gorman Toogood since Sept. 13, when a camera in a department store parking lot videotaped her punching and shaking her 4-year-old daughter.
The attorney, Stephen Rosen, said Ms. Toogood is on her way to Chicago and will surrender. She is charged with felony battery to a child.
Indiana police took the search nationwide Wednesday when they released the tape. "We want to get the girl the medical attention she needs," Police Chief Anthony A. Hazen said. "We want to get her to an emergency room and let them examine her."
Ms. Toogood is also wanted in Texas on at least two warrants. Fort Worth police said one warrant involves a shoplifting charge in March. Authorities in White Settlement, a Fort Worth suburb, issued an arrest warrant on an unspecified Class C misdemeanor.
Ms. Gorman's sister, 31-year-old Margaret Daley, who authorities say was present at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with failure to report child abuse.
Police received more than 1,000 calls about the video, which was first aired Wednesday night.
Staff writer Laurie Fox contributed to this report.
Thank you for your kind remarks, but in fact I didn't hit abuse. If the deleted reply you're referring to is #203, I missed it also.
Scandal in Bohemia bump.
If it fits, wear it. Don't attempt to get in my face about it, either.
That's nice. We'll have to ping you to the next "all Muslims are evil and they all need to be deported" thread.
Defenders of private tyranny over the weakest and most innocent.
What you say, BADJOE? Should we all just rant and come to the defense of this poor, misunderstood, and maligned young woman? Are the po-lice oppressing her by wanting to investigate allegations of her exercising her liberty and freedom to commit tyrannical abuse? And is this all just nunya bidness?
At the national gathering of SMOD (Single Mothers On Disabilty) today in the Cherry Blossom Motel in South-East DC Senator Hillary spoke to our national response to the incident in Indiania where a huge SUV driving woman viciously beat a tiny, defenseless and precocious fourth year old child to whom she was maternally related."Our children must be protected. They are our bridge to the future." said the vivacious and intelligent NY Senator. "We can not afford to allow any adult to punch a four-year child in the head and get away with it. We need to turn aside the extreme right-wing's concerns over privacy and ignore those religious fanatics who claim that the parent-child bond is sacred -- as this case clearly shows, raising young children safetly is something beyond the reach of many Americans. Our children are crying out in pain and agony for the help of our federal government. And we need to do something. We can't allow even one more child to suffer in this manner.
"That's why today, I, together with many leaders from both sides of the aisle in the Senate, am proposing the Millenium Omnibus American Child Security And Welfare Act.
"In this needed piece of legistlation we have mandated that all places where children may be so endangered be fitted with 24/7 security cameras, manned by specially trained caring women from the Reno and Shalala Child Protection Agency.
"This bill contains many needed and necessary provisions to ensure the saftey of the children in this new Millenium."
Sometimes FR becomes the common soap box of anyone wishing to be righteously enraged about something. Rage, however, doesn't think or even see well, nor while in a rage can anyone consider the long term consequences of actions then initiated.
So I wrote this bit of satire to show how haridans and mandarins might make use of a mob rage with some geniune founding and turn it to their own purposes.
This initially got national airplay because the local authorities had hit a dead end in the investigation and hoped that getting the images on the air would help find the little girl or coerce the mother into surrendering, which it did.
There's no conspiracy here.
Do you really think that anybody, except the most radical, would at any time consider putting cameras in private homes?
Although your remarks about this woman are inflammatory, my only question is, is whether the words used are used in such a circumstance that demeans ALL Women
PS
Your white sheet is showing...LOL~
