Mother to surrender in videotaped beating of girl
09/21/2002
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - A woman seen on a department store security tape punching her 4-year-old daughter plans to surrender Saturday, her attorney said Friday night.
Police have been searching for Madelyne Gorman Toogood since Sept. 13, when a camera in a department store parking lot videotaped her punching and shaking her 4-year-old daughter.
The attorney, Stephen Rosen, said Ms. Toogood is on her way to Chicago and will surrender. She is charged with felony battery to a child.
Indiana police took the search nationwide Wednesday when they released the tape. "We want to get the girl the medical attention she needs," Police Chief Anthony A. Hazen said. "We want to get her to an emergency room and let them examine her."
Ms. Toogood is also wanted in Texas on at least two warrants. Fort Worth police said one warrant involves a shoplifting charge in March. Authorities in White Settlement, a Fort Worth suburb, issued an arrest warrant on an unspecified Class C misdemeanor.
Ms. Gorman's sister, 31-year-old Margaret Daley, who authorities say was present at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with failure to report child abuse.
Police received more than 1,000 calls about the video, which was first aired Wednesday night.
Staff writer Laurie Fox contributed to this report.
I was hoping you'd show up and comment.
And, yes, I knew exactly what you would say. : )
Care to compare the amount of time spent by your favorite TV media outlet on Sudan in the past year with the time spent on this absolutely insignificant 'story' in the past 24 hours?
What should you conclude?
Even with a camera on every corner, where criminals are fully aware of the surveillance, there is no evidence that they give up on crime. There are cameras in every bank in America; are there no bank robberies? Of course there are. Banks are still robbed, children are still abused, and women are still raped.
A crime is already committed and over by the time it's "caught on tape."
Video Cameras by their nature make as little sense in PREVENTING street crime as Mutually-Assured-Destruction makes sense for preventing a criminal like Hussein from committing atrocities.
why are such paranoid people, such as you and the others you agree with on this thread, even on the Internet? Don't you know that Big Brother is watching?
"on the internet?" Nobody in America can "choose" to stay "off the internet." Government, bank, commerce records of each person are parked on the internet whether you own a computer or not! My credit accounts can be hacked while the card is in my wallet.
Posting on a government monitored "hate site" like FR doesn't concern me near as much as those who really want to promote Orwell's visions to the non-fiction section.
These things happen, you know?
Is THIS news?
My point exactly....wait till the CPS folks tell you what constitutes "beating" to them. How bout mental abuse from too much "time out"? Good luck!
The label tossing on the thread comes as a reaction to the crime that occurred, or the crimes and lifestyle of the people, or group she's associated with. They're pissed off at the crimes, not that she's white, poor, rich, or Irish. The labels fit the catagory of meaningless intensives. IMO, if the words were used in a hateful manner it's appropriate, 'cause the bitch deserves it.
That's disgusting. Suggesting we should sacrifice a child's life. Get a grip.
MY ACCOUNT HAS BEEN COMPRIMISED.
Actually - what I believe is that so many of the things we consider to be abuse today weren't considered abuse 30 years ago. We are a society in denial - life is ugly - that doesn't make it bad.
It's disgusting, true. But it's a good example of they hyperbole being so liberally dished out in this thread.
She probably has tools with sharp edges. (/sarcasm) Of course you've had ONE glimpse into her life and drawn all sorts of conlusions - easy enough to do I suppose.
Obviously you have not seen the 'full' video or you would not have aired your previous comments.
I agree completely. And I would say that the video is plenty to initiate an investigation. I'm not certain from what I can see in it that it would be enough to indict all by itself. I have not espoused the support for this woman, her behaviour or the lack of any appropriate role by government that you have accused me of. My complaint is about the hang 'em high attitudes and the lack of relevance to the aims of FR.
