Mother to surrender in videotaped beating of girl

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - A woman seen on a department store security tape punching her 4-year-old daughter plans to surrender Saturday, her attorney said Friday night.

Police have been searching for Madelyne Gorman Toogood since Sept. 13, when a camera in a department store parking lot videotaped her punching and shaking her 4-year-old daughter.

The attorney, Stephen Rosen, said Ms. Toogood is on her way to Chicago and will surrender. She is charged with felony battery to a child.

Indiana police took the search nationwide Wednesday when they released the tape. "We want to get the girl the medical attention she needs," Police Chief Anthony A. Hazen said. "We want to get her to an emergency room and let them examine her."

Ms. Toogood is also wanted in Texas on at least two warrants. Fort Worth police said one warrant involves a shoplifting charge in March. Authorities in White Settlement, a Fort Worth suburb, issued an arrest warrant on an unspecified Class C misdemeanor.

Ms. Gorman's sister, 31-year-old Margaret Daley, who authorities say was present at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with failure to report child abuse.

Police received more than 1,000 calls about the video, which was first aired Wednesday night.

How about people calling other people 'white trash'. If anything could fall under 'hate crime', that this is it. You are divorced from reality if you claim only a victim can commit justifiable homicide.

CPS is run by the state. The state cannot legally punish crimes until after a guilty verdict is rendered. CPS routinely removes children (punishment) without even charges, much less conviction. That is unconstitutional, no matter how you slice it.

Don't worry. The problem in Sudan will become an issue of concern and you will see everyone here emoting like crazy as soon as the gov't and/or all the media at once (funny how they seem to be in tune with each other) will tell them that whatever happens in Sudan is outrageous.

Of course, this may never happen but it's not impossible.

It is possible that the child prevented whatever the perp was trying to scam. I believe that she and her sister were thrown out of the store just moments before. Grifters perhaps? That would explain a lot.

This woman reminds me of so many women I am acquainted with who resent their children interfering with the sordid lifestyles they would rather be leading.

Actually there are lots and lots of people truly concerned and aware of the atrocities in Sudan. Many Christians are working and praying and financially supporting relief efforts in Sudan. I am aware of no conspiracy media govt or otherwise to prevent that information from being known. Where have your been?

I did a couple of those interventions, before all the child abuse laws. I always gave the kid my card and never left until I was assured the kid would call if it ever happened again. I also made sure the cowardly oaf paid attention, so he knew I'd be back. I knew if I interveined, the creep would take it out on the kid later if I didn't promise a return and surprise check.

So you run into parking lot beatings often? I think that you and the last guy are quite frankly full of it.

I agree that what I see in this video is definitely a beating but I do not agree with the tone of many of the bleeding hearts on this board. This case was over the line yes but many of you sound like the type who stick your nose in where it doesn't belong. You know the type. Parent is in the grocery store child is completely out of control, parent disciplines child and then out of the blue there is one of you bleeding hearts sticking your nose in.

First thing to note: Parents often take their children either to the bathroom or the parking lot to discipline them. This is to avoid people like you. (Don't get sidetracked I said discipline, not beat, I do agree this woman was beating her child)

Second thing to note: It's none of your business when a parent disciplines their child.

Third thing to note: if one of you should happen to brazenly stick your nose into my business, then you would soon after be having your nose set in the local emergency room!

fourthly: Like I said, I don't believe either you or the previous poster. A child whether he was beat or not would not side with a stranger over their parent. Did you get charged for assaulting thes eparents when the police arrived? I think you two are just a wee bitt looney and perhaps looking for some attention. I also find it interesting that at least half of the bleeding hearts here claim to have been abused. Thats the problem with the internet anyone can make anything up to prove their point. That is all...

My final analysis: The woman should be charged. But let us not spill this over into the "don't spank your children mantra"

According to the knee-jerk ideologues, the innocent and sinless mother who mercilessly slapped her 4 year old is a veritable Jesus being sacrificed to the blood-thirsty mob, and the little monstrous and criminal girl is the robber, Barrabas.

I have been given the instruction and advice, by my incredible wife, that my Biblical analogy was lacking and unclear. I never intended to cast the mother in the 'innocent' role of Jesus or her child in the role of Barabbas. So, Kevin, I now understand why you picked on that small piece of my original post. It is my opinion that all those posters calling for her imminent destruction, based on this video, were not unlike the mob who screamed for Jesus' crucifixion not knowing the first thing about Him or the case against Him. The mob mentality wants what it wants facts bedamned. That video is little better than what they had yet this thread sounds like the roar of the crowd calling 'crucify Him, crucify Him'.

A better analogy might have been the 'woman caught in adultery'. I wasn't thinking so much of the Toogood woman as I was the principles involved. This thread began with the most inflammatory rhetoric, right out of Al Quaeda's version of the Koran. (Don't ask me what the real version is. I don't care.) I found the blameless principals of 'presumption of innocence' and 'due process' as being sacrificed for emotional gratification. I guess that makes 'sinful nature' the Barabbas of that analogy.

Am I outraged that people beat children? The harshest of you wouldn't want to see my reaction to it. The most sadistic of you wouldn't enjoy seeing me struggle to curb that reaction.

But I'm on FR to explore the rights and wrongs of government, not every sinner in the world. And common sense dictates that government cannot solve all the problems of all the people. Asking it to will inevitably cause us all far more problems. Neither of you two, IMO, believe that. Statists! I completely disagree with you on this one. I'm all for keeping the government out of our lives, especially when it comes to our kids, but this wench went beyond the pale; she beat the living hell out of that baby and she DESERVES to lose that child.
