Florida asks again: 'Who won?' Reno weighs options after voting glitches

By Deborah Sharp
USA TODAY

FORT LAUDERDALE -- In a state already famous for voting foul-ups, Floridians still weren't sure Wednesday which Democrat won the right to face Gov. Jeb Bush in November.

With 97% of the vote counted from Tuesday's primary, Tampa lawyer Bill McBride held a thin lead over former U.S. attorney general Janet Reno.

But final tallies from the problem-plagued primary aren't expected until noon today. And election officials are scrambling to determine what went wrong.

''This must not happen again in November,'' Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas said. ''People don't trust our ability to run an election.''

The primary was the first statewide test of updated equipment that cost more than $32 million and a system completely overhauled since the presidential debacle of 2000. Other regions also reported glitches, but the most serious mishaps occurred in heavily populated Broward and Miami-Dade counties -- Reno strongholds that account for more than one-fifth of the state's 9.1 million registered voters. New touch-screen voting machines malfunctioned. Polling places opened late or not at all. Workers failed to show up or get trained on the new equipment.

Voters are disappointed and disgusted at mishaps reminiscent of the 2000 presidential election that took six weeks to settle in Florida.

''The whole world must be laughing at us. It really is a shame,'' said Florence Pittelman, 83, whose Broward County polling place was hours late in opening.

Reno, a Miami native, is concerned that hundreds of voters were prevented from casting ballots in counties where she led McBride in polls.

''She's extremely upset about the disenfranchisement,'' campaign official Nicole Harburger said.

Reno is weighing legal options, such as demanding a recount or suing to overturn the results. A recount will be automatic if the final difference between McBride and Reno is less than half a percent.

By Wednesday evening, with nearly all of the precincts reporting, McBride had 599,465 votes, or 45%, compared with Reno's 588,177 votes, or 44%. State Sen. Daryl Jones had 155,699 votes, or 12%.

Jim Smith, the state's elections chief, criticized the independent supervisors who oversee voting in the two southern counties.

''I'm very proud of what's been accomplished in 65 of our 67 counties,'' Smith said. ''Two counties get F-minus, minus, minus.''

Even before Tuesday, the Florida primary earned headlines. Reno, the former Miami prosecutor and U.S. attorney general, polled as much as 30 points ahead of rivals early in the campaign. But the little known McBride, a Tampa lawyer and former Marine awarded a Bronze Star, portrayed himself as the only Democrat who could beat Bush in Florida's more conservative districts north of Miami.

He outspent Reno and won the support of Democrat activists who felt he could better take on Bush, younger brother of President Bush.

Reno's e-mail was sent out 5 minutes before the Florida secretary of state held a news conference to certify Mc Bride as the winner. Seems clear she is fighting on. What's incredibly ironic is that she will now fell the same heat from the Clinton mafia that she once was in charge of doling out. It is true,Janet what goes around comes around. Terry Mac is probably about to make her life a living hell. Expect lesbian photos any day. This is wild.

Reno Refuses to Concede Fla. Primary

MIAMI (AP) - State election officials said Thursday that Bill McBride finished 8,196 votes ahead of Janet Reno ( news - web sites) in Florida's bungled Democratic primary for governor. Reno refused to concede and would not rule out a court challenge to determine who will take on Republican Gov. Jeb Bush this fall.

Let them go at it.

Jackbill, you know that the democrats never let the truth or the facts get in their way.

It is not so much that they lie, it is that they are incapable of telling the truth.

If they did not lie they would not be democrats.
