No. I have no wish to trick any of you. The ongoing and virulent decline towards bitterness ... grudges carried from one thread to another ... name calling ... defections and assaults on good Patriots' integrity here lately got me to thinking what a site would look like if it was up and running during the Revolutionary War ... during a time when ALL of our futures were at stake, as they are now.
Would it be any different ... or would the same passions and conflicts prevail ... the same differences of opinion? What did they use instead of tin foil ... did they even need it?! What were the arguments ... how were they resolved, if they were?
We've the luxury of FreeRepublic to settle disputes ... or carry them on ... be active or not ... on a minute-by-minute basis. If these long ago Patriots had the same ... how would they have responded?!
I would ask ... if flames are in this thread's future, please direct them towards me ... otherwise...

Let me get this straight. Fort Washington is captured ... in the final Battle of New York ...for the Brits managed to get ships past the ports without ANY difficulty ... thus rendering the ports useless to our Patriots ... a fort carrying the name of your "King" Washington ... and this same inept "King" Washington was forced to retreat.
2,722 Patriots were taken prisoner and Howe's forces pursued wimpy-Washington all the way out of the territory until wishy-washy-Washington crossed the Delaware ... running like the coward he is. WE NEED A NEW LEADER ... wake UP, man!

The sum of 2 million dollars was to be raised from the House Tax. Pennsylvania was to contribute $237,000. Since there were very few slaves in the state, the force of the tax fell or rested on dwelling houses and property. This tax became known as the "Window Tax", since the measuring of the size of the windows and the counting of window panes was a part of the assessment. It was known as the "Hot-Water Tax", because housewives poured hot water on the assessors from their second story windows to discourage them while they were counting and measuring. It was also known as the "Milford Tax", since that is where the main opposition seems to have been centered. Finally, it became known as the "John Fries Rebellion", as Fries was considered the ringleader of an armed opposition.

Of course Jefferson fled...It was prudent as no one knew better than he that at the request of General Washington, he had sent the state's militia to the aid of the American army.
The militia were north with Washington that spring or farther south, in the Carolinas!
Who could think that that "genius" Cornwallis would invade Virginia before securing his northern and southern bases!

The Battle of New York brings into focus the variables which are inherent to ALL battles fought and won or merely delayed for a better day, which this one clearly was ... these include but are not limited to ... strength of character, leadership, commitment, a clean heart and a true vision.
You are correct. I will concede that General Washington made several strategic errors when positioning his troops ... 20,000 of them, split between Fort Washington in northern Manhattan ...(at or around what was to become 180th Street on the west side) ... and in Brooklyn Heights. Washington thus had troops on both sides of the East River --- all the way up and down Manhattan Island.
But Washington underestimated Howe's ability to amass ships ... using German mercenaries, eventually enjoinging Cornwallis, Count von Dunop --- and that absolutely despicable Commander whose name will go down in infamy as a souless miscreant ... Commander Clinton.
Add to that the fact that Manhattan was awash in Loyalists, the negative psychological impact this had on the Continental Army can not be overstated. Without a Navy to control the waters around New York Harbor, Washington's forces were split in half and surrounded.
The resulting battle, right in the middle of Manhattan, was of such a fierce and bloody nature, history will use it as a measure of war's fury ~~~ for nothing worse can be imagined.
Still, it was Washington's clear command, steely resolve ... inherent just character ... and the devotion he inspired from his troops which enabled him to retreat successfully, though with many casualties throughout. So thorough, was the retreat, that when the Brits finally made it to Brooklyn Heights ... they found nothing but useless, rusting buckets. HA!
We should remember Manhattan and the Battle of New York ... for it symbolizes all this great, young Country stands for ... courage, strength, resolve and faith.
