A Few of FR's Finest..... ......Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001
So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!
And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

ONE OF FR'S FINEST
"Alamo-Girl" Freeper since 3/14/98
"Do you Remember the Alamo?"
Alamo-Girl will likely never forget the Alamo. She was born and raised in San Antonio TX and lived there for many years. She now resides in Illinois but still flies the flag of Texas on her Profile Page.
Alamo-Girl is being featured as One of FR's Finest because of her contributions to Free Republic in the past, in the present and her plans and goals for the future. Long before FR had lots of bandwidth, sophisticated software and John Robinson's expertise, Alamo-Girl was providing valued service and assistance.
Alamo-Girl and FReeper Jolly were co-recipients on the first round of Golden Eagle awards presented by Free Republic. Alamo-Girl is proud to have this award hanging on the wall over her desk. Alamo-Girl enjoys the honor of having a link to her website on the Front Page of FreeRepublic (located under Resources). She is one of the few individuals to be listed there.
Alamo-Girl describes herself as "being a grunt in the effort around Free Republic, basically doing secretarial and clerical work over the years to support the forum and the activism."
Long time FReepers remember her well for her Newcomer Welcome Center and Information Desk; Freeper Profiles and Downside Legacy at Two Degrees of President Clinton.
"Newcomer Welcome Center and Information Desk"
The "Newcomer: Welcome Center and Information Desk" threads were refreshed almost daily to welcome newcomers, answer questions and provide useful links. With the redesign of the FR Home Page, there was no need to continue because the major functions are addressed there. The last Newcomer Welcome Center and Information Desk thread is linked here.Newcomer Welcome Center and Information Desk.
"Freeper Profiles"
Alamo-Girl created Freeper Profiles and kept them refreshed to summarize for the Lurkers "who we are" and to provide Freepers a way to find authorities on various subjects and to get to know one another. The vast improvements made by John Robinson to the software have pretty much satisfied the functions previously served by the Profile list. The last one is here: Freeper Profiles
"Downside Legacy at Two Degrees of President Clinton"
Alamo-Girl began the Downside Legacy at Two Degrees of President Clinton (DSL) in 1998. "It was a full time job, seven days a week tracking the Clintons at two degrees." In the early days, she refreshed the information directly as threads on the Free Republic file server. But the information grew too large (it's 10,000 pages worth now) and the preview function on Free Republic was such that it couldn't be downloaded. So Alamo-Girl relocated the entire DSL to her website: Alamo-Girl Website
During the impeachment, a group of Freepers had the DSL, which was only about 1,000 pages at the time, printed, bound and delivered to the Senators and some Representatives. The information was also burned to CDs by some Freepers for their own use and to provide information to journalists.
Eventually,. Alamo-Girl "got a bit more sophisticated" and started analyzing the information using timelines and other techniques. Just before the Cox/Dicks committee report was released, a group of Freepers used the timeline information from the DSL and prepared another publication for all the members of Congress. The DSL information was also used in the Chinagate project and other research endeavors.
Alamo-Girl continues to compile information for the Clinton Legacy but she currently has it housed on her local storage only because of cost considerations.
"She Should Write a Book"
Well, as a matter of fact, she already has. Several in fact. The first one has been published - "The Downside Legacy at Two Degrees of President Clinton's Missile Defence "which tells the story of what happened to missile defense from the beginning, through Clinton's watch and into the George W. Bush administration.
The book, and future books (she figures it will take at least 50 books to relate the whole Downside Clinton legacy), is written in layman's terms and provides a "forest" view of the related events on a timeline so you can see things emerge in context. The information is offered as a compilation of excerpts. It does not suggest what it all means - instead it challenges you to arrive at your own, independent conclusions and asks you to share your views online at FreeRepublic.com!
THANK YOU ALAMO-GIRL
ENJOY YOUR DAY AS ONE OF FR'S FINEST

Hey Captain....be careful out there....the whales are coming aboard.....all hands on deck!
Collision With Whale Stuns California Fishermen (One Fisherman Dead)
San Luis Tribune ^ | September 4, 2002
MORRO BAY - Fishermen accustomed to the hazards of one of the most dangerous professions are still shaking their heads over the freak accident that killed Jerry Tibbs on Sunday.
A whale breached and landed on top of Tibbs' boat, the BBQ, knocking the Bakersfield restaurateur and frequent Morro Bay sportfisherman into the ocean.
Coast Guard Chief Mike Saindon has spent the better part of the last three days searching records to see if this kind of fatal tragedy had been documented before. He came up empty.
"I've heard of countless boats hitting whales," said Saindon, the commander of Coast Guard Station Morro Bay.
"That's pretty common, and it's what we expected this to be when we got the distress call," he said. "It really floored us when we saw the boat. We're still in shock. It's quite bizarre."
It's an extreme long shot, according to a local marine surveyor, but it can happen.
"A gray whale breached and landed on the side of my crew boat back around 1979," recounted Jim Wood, a marine surveyor and ship captain from Morro Bay. "It was just outside of Port Hueneme.
"Fortunately, the boat was 65 feet and steel. We were making about 18 knots and managed to slip by before it slammed onto the aft rail and starboard transom corner."
It was probably a humpback whale that struck the BBQ, and it must have been at least 10 feet off the water, said Harold Davis, owner of Davis Boats in Paso Robles and a friend of Tibbs. The damage may have been made worse due to the construction of the hull. It is effectively unsinkable.
"What crushed it was the buoyancy of the boat pushing against the weight of the whale," Davis said. There was heavy damage to the roof and the seat, and major damage to the transom (the back end of the boat), where the whale's body or head hit. "It was a hell of a blow," he added.
The whale rolled over the wheelhouse and badly damaged the transom. Tibbs was thrown into the water and lost his life.
The BBQ's radio antenna was broken by the whale, as was most of the electronic gear. Saindon said the three men left on board were unable to use the electronics to help rescuers find the boat. "We were unable to hear them on our radio," he said.
Security officers at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant were able to pick them up on their radio.
The Coast Guard rescued the three other Bakersfield men on board the boat -- Charles Brim, Alan Brim and Richard Arrington. Arrington suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital, treated and released.
Morro Bay contractor Joe Anderton was a "best friend" with Tibbs and fished with him many times. He was supposed to go fishing on the BBQ on Monday but instead spent Sunday night and Monday morning helping organize the volunteer search.
He also went to Port San Luis to pick up the boat, which had a fish hold filled with albacore. Pieces of whale flesh were snagged amid the damage.
Anderton said they gave the fish away to people standing around the hoist, commenting that Tibbs wouldn't have wanted the fish to spoil.

I didn't see any listed that way, but you might find a good source through some of the Freepers under Sales & Marketing or Seamstress headings. BADJOE might be a good one to ask also, I think he knows a lot about a lot of things!

WVNan: Re: your #197 questions:
To clean the bilge, find Scuttlebutt via your nose and it will be most obvious what needs to be done. After finishing, put Scuttlebutt back where you found him. Put Thud back in his lap as that is his favorite sleeping place. After your bath and inspection of the area by beowolf, you may go ashore with those of the crew who have had recent baths and are not in the brig. Your spouse has been given a long list of the auction houses which he might enjoy.
We will be here three days, so enjoy the view and other sites in the area.

Howdy Pippi. Slay any liberal giants today?
They may try to argue, but just hit 'em with the truth - gets 'em everytime. They'll fire an insult at you then turn and walk/run away with their tails between their legs talking to themselves.
It's a lovely site to see and a lot of fun.
Practice, Practice, Practice.

And here I have a lot of chances to practice! LOL!!

Back for just long enough to make a quick post and leave a couple of gifs. (And answer you, Lori..............Yes, I feel bad, but not too bad to save that rose and exchange it for the one I already had put on my profile page - since you put the name on this one. It is SO PRETTY, Lori - so soft and feminine looking!) I'll take back my comment and let you have one of those hugs from that graphic after all. :)
Now, Coby, he's just a tad stiff, but I'm playin' like it's cause he just climbed down off that horse after a lot of miles in th' saddle! Has nothing to do with his white hair, mind you!
Nan, some people don't leave any 'canvas' room around their gifs, so I had to add the name on top of the gif!
