I would walk along the streets and think of the old song from The Fantasticks: "Try to remember the kind of September when life was an ember about to billow." I often thought of that song myself.
Another amazing piece of writing from Noonan! Peggy rarely disappoints!

Noonan is terrific. I got the feeling of Autumn from that piece. I love Autumn.

She never fails to bring tears to my eyes! I just LOVE the way she writes; so conversationally!

She makes references to last year's 'lost autumn'.
My experience was exactly the opposite.
The sky never seemed so clear, the sun never as warm as it did to me starting in August of last year.
And on September 11 the sky was crystal clear, and it seemed to remain that way for another 6 weeks here, well past the normal start of winter.
I felt like I was being shown something really important, something worth remembering.
Strange that that's how I remember that time.

So, um ... what happened to the autumn of 2000? That was right after I had to move out of Manhattan. :(

Will the non-stop all-network Sept. 11 memorials on TV do harm or good? Is it wallowing? Yes
Do we need closure?

Peggy Noonan makes one feel that they are sitting with her over a cup of coffee. As I was reading this wonderful piece, I was thinking about how extraordinary it would be to have Peggy and JohnHuang2 write something together. Can you imagine? What a piece of fantastic writing it would be!

Thank you Pokey. Really enjoyed this one.

Thanks for the ping.
We haven't had an autumn in New York in two years. We lost last September last year. It was the summer of '01, and then before the leaves could turn it was the trauma of '01, and we woke up six months later, in the spring. So all those tender leaves--they didn't register. I would walk along the streets and think of the old song from The Fantasticks: "Try to remember the kind of September when life was an ember about to billow." It was sad here as summer elided into winter.
Very poignant!

That experience of Jose, that his deceased co-worker appeared to him in a dream, is something that I have heard from many, many people. Not in relation to 9/11, but in relation to the death of a loved one. It seems that the Almighty gives each newcomer to Heaven one chance to comfort someone grieving.

I could read Peggy all day. She is a word artist, painting pictures with words. This one is bitter sweet, but I hope for New York that they can have autumn this year.
