A carry permit is not as difficult to obtain as a lot of people would have you believe. You have to give a good reason for wanting the permit. You have to not be a felon and not have, for example, eleven hundred outstanding parking tickets.

Here in Iowa -- a "may issue" state -- you are at the mercy of your county sheriff. For all I know, he consults a roulette wheel, ouija board and/or Magic 8-Ball.

Great article. Thanks.

I agree with the author except his move to LA and then staying there!

If he hadn't been carrying his 9mm that night, he or his wife or both might not been alive when his story was written.

Same here, newgeezer. California is a "may issue" state, and we are at the mercy of the county sheriff. In my county, you just might get a permit if you are a buddy of his, and contribute to his re-election campaign. There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 CCW permits in this county, a county with a population of over 2 million. But other than that, it was quite a letter. I believe my life is worth defending. I don't understand people who don't believe their own lives and the lives of their family members are worth defending. I just don't get it.

As for the manufacture of all those devices and all those bullets, during World War II the United States became "the great arsenal of democracy." It is a damned good thing for the English that we were, too, or they would be holding Oktoberfests right now.

Excellent Bump! Thanks for posting.

Don't appologize.

I had not seen this before - although some of my "more educated" colleagues likely have.

Thanks for posting it.

The one thing that could have gotten the author in trouble is justing wounding his would be mugger. If he would have missed his leg he might have had a different outcome.

Rule #1 - Never aim a gun at something you don't intend to shoot.

Rule #2 - Never shoot at anything you don't intend to kill.

Rule #3 - Aim for the torso it's the biggest target.

As I have said here many times before, if they want my guns, simply come try to take them away. The choice is theirs, the response is mine.

The 2 rules I was taught when I was 10 (I did grow up in Los Angeles) were:

#1: There is no such thing as an unloaded gun.

#2: Never point it at anything that you don't intend to kill.
