A carry permit is not as difficult to obtain as a lot of people would have you believe. You have to give a good reason for wanting the permit. You have to not be a felon and not have, for example, eleven hundred outstanding parking tickets.

Here in Iowa -- a "may issue" state -- you are at the mercy of your county sheriff. For all I know, he consults a roulette wheel, ouija board and/or Magic 8-Ball.

Great article. Thanks.

As for the manufacture of all those devices and all those bullets, during World War II the United States became "the great arsenal of democracy." It is a damned good thing for the English that we were, too, or they would be holding Oktoberfests right now.

Excellent Bump! Thanks for posting.

The one thing that could have gotten the author in trouble is justing wounding his would be mugger. If he would have missed his leg he might have had a different outcome.

Rule #1 - Never aim a gun at something you don't intend to shoot.

Rule #2 - Never shoot at anything you don't intend to kill.

Rule #3 - Aim for the torso it's the biggest target.

As I have said here many times before, if they want my guns, simply come try to take them away. The choice is theirs, the response is mine.

"I aimed the automatic at the outer edge of his left thigh and shot him."
I don't know whether this guy is damn good or damn lucky.

And this was written in the 80's. Today we are in the beginning of a great war, and don't let anyone tell you we are not. It is not a war of OUR choosing, one has only to listen to the rhetoric of the Islamist fanatics and their schools and mosques, to know that. It is being carried TO us, and we cannot turn our backs on it anymore than the writer could turn his back on the perps who were trying to victimize him.

Go to the range, find your weapons of choice, train with them, train with as many other types as you can get your hands on. Prepare for what IS coming!

A favorite of mine:

We have so many violent people looking to shoot someone that we should ban handguns, but if you want a gun to protect yourself from these violent people you are just being paranoid.

Esquire reprinted this in their 50th anniversary issue of 1983 I believe and that is where I read it. I reread it relatively recently after I had joined FR. It is fascinating how this obvious liberal goes through the thought process of justifying the use of a gun.

The play's premise is that what we call human values are actually luxuries qualities that only emerge and exist under the best and calmest of conditions. It was a spooky production and great theater, but I did not see how it could possibly relate to America in the late Seventies.

This statement can rightfully claim hours, perhaps days of introspection and discussion, if not outright debate.
Unless curling up in a ball and waiting for death to come is your idea of resisting mindless chaos, is is truly frightening to realize what we might (and probably would) do to protect and defend our loved ones.

The environment, the ADA Act, Endangered Species, Air pollution, the Ozone Hole are all artifacts and luxuries possible ony if we are not aware that civilization is a very thin veneer, and it is mostly worn away.

Things since the late 70s-early 80s have definitely not improved.

Harsh reality breaks through. The founders knew all of this. Human nature has not changed, either individually or societally.
