George W. Bush had a rare opportunity after 11 September. He could have attempted to reverse the most toxic tide in the Western world: the sappy multiculturalism that insists all cultures are equally valid, even as they’re trying to kill us...

Thanks for the post and the pings, gents.

This is a must read article.

I love Steyn, but the NEA makes me so mad all I can see is red (pun).

Last spring I read that some western state was fining the NEA for contributing an insane majority of its funs to the DNC. I was hoping that 49 other states would follow suit but even the story of that western state seems to have vanished.

Every teacher I've known for the past 15 years hates the NEA. What gives? Why is it still around? Could it be - Demoncrats?

"He has the American publi on his side - all he has to do is explain it. He has great speachwritters and they can do it, but he doesn't."

He doesn't because it's the waning days of summer and no one is paying attention except the highly-annoyed media. You're "misunderestimating" him again. When the time is right, he'll make you proud.

By ‘Islam is peace’, they mean that once the whole world’s converted to Islam there will be peace, but not before.

When the heck are we in the west going to get this???

I called my son's school on Monday and talked to the principal, expressing my concern about the NEA and what they suggested in regards to 9/11. The principal hadn't even heard of the suggestion, and told me that they had planned on having the kids wear patriotic clothes and have a patriotic ceremony that day. There are schools and teachers in America that are still doing it right.

Another great one from Steyn. He's approaching de Toqueville status, but with a sense of humor added. Sometimes it takes a foreigner to see clearly and describe accurately the essence of being American. I am grateful for this man's abilities to do exactly that.

I have a bunch of school teacher friends and I try to avoid discussing teaching because, to the one, they end up going into these wild gibberish rants. I live in Mass., too, and some of them are Dems, but what they are forced to accept is far too bleeding heart liberal, even for them, like accepting teenage criminals into their classrooms, even ones who have committed violent crimes, because some judge gave the kid the option of jail or school. And the teachers are not allowed to carry any sort of defense nor are allowed to touch these kids.

Like your story, most of the teachers I know completely ignore the NEA and generally do the right thing.

NEA has to go.

Bravo to Mark Steyn for clear thinking.

Western self-loathing is primarily a subject thoroughly written about and taught in our schools of higher education. What K – 12 missed, these purveyors of the Machiavellian approach to life continue to assault the mindless once in college. “The Ugly American” is still their ‘bible’ and a best seller these days in the Mid-East and Europe.

Tolerance/Political Correctness are America’s Achilles Heel not only to the media/press but to the Islamic world as well.

The letters I have received from some NEA members tell me I have it all wrong in condemning their approach to 9/11...they can’t see what has happened to them they are so indoctrinated in Socialism/Marxism and the continued studies of John Dewey. Do you remember when Bill Clinton said loud and clear...”all children should be able to read by the eighth grade”? The children of the 60’s and 70’s are the very products of such professors and are now trying to lead our country in their failed attempts of that idyllic fantasy...socialism.

Being Compassionate brings with it the huge responsibility of doing the right thing, ethics and integrity. No lying; no Cheating therefore no Political Correctness and no Tolerance for evil.

I wonder if Steyn will ever write an essay that's less than excellent? He seems to have an infallible touch.

Bush has done a lot of good things, but he has let us down badly here.

The very fact this issue even needs to be discussed in a serious and defensive manner indicates how badly we are losing the struggles for the hearts and minds the Liberals continue to influence with their idiotic notions!

Somehow, I don't think people are paying attention, including Mr.Steyn. In almost every speech, the President talks about this being the greatest nation on earth, how our people are the best, and that we will prevail. He defends freedom, our form of government, and the freedom we have to worship as we please.

It is not necessary to point out the defects of the other side, merely to promote ours as the best, which is what he has done. Those who want to hear the President ranting about the defects of Islam (evident to anyone with an IQ above turnip stage) are going to be waiting a long time. It is not his style nor in his nature; in the same way he campaigns by dwelling on the positive instead of going into a full-frontal attack on the democrats.

What has happened is that to the American public who might not have understood initially, they see a reasonable man who seems to be a nice guy, and then they get a hefty dose of ranting Islamic spokespeople and clerics. I do believe they have figured this out for themselves.

Besides, there are plenty of people to carry on the war against the PC culture, and it is not the President's job to do this when there are so many more weighty things on his plate.

And as far as I know, no one in my state is going to be using this NEA curriculum. We are having memorial services and videos reviewing the events of the last year.

Mark Steyn: The war Bush is losing

Excerpt:

President Bush has won the first battle (Afghanistan) but he’s in danger of losing the war. The war isn’t with al-Qa’eda, or Saddam, or the House of Saud. They’re all a bunch of losers. True, insignificant loser states have caused their share of trouble. But that was because, from Vietnam to Grenada, they were used for proxy wars between the great opposing forces of communism and the free world. In a unipolar world, it’s clear that the real enemy in this war is ourselves, and our lemming-like rush to cultural suicide. By ‘our’, I don’t mean me or my neighbours or the American people. I don’t even mean the Democrats: American politics is more responsive and populist than Europe’s, and when war with Iraq starts Hillary will be cheerleading along with the rest of them. But against that are all the people who shape our culture, who teach our children, who run our colleges and churches, who make the TV shows we watch — and they haven’t got a clue. Bruce Springsteen’s inert, equivalist wallow of a 9/11 album, The Rising, is a classic example of how even a supposed ‘blue-collar’ icon can’t bring himself to want America to win. Oprah’s post-9/11 message is that it’s all about ‘who you love and how you love’. On my car radio, John McCain pops up on behalf of the Office of Civil Rights every ten minutes sternly reminding me not to beat up Muslims.

Please let me know if you want ON or OFF my General Interest ping list!. . .don't be shy.

all he has to do is explain it

I'd be happy if, sometime before his term ends, he'd show some indication of UNDERSTANDING it.
