Marc Racicot, former Governor of Montana. Not a bad guy, but no firebrand.........and of course you know that when it comes to "face time" with today's media, the head of the RNC can't BUY exposure.

Governor Marc Racicot
Chairman, Republican National Committee

Nominated by President George W. Bush, Governor Marc Racicot was unanimously elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee in January 2002.

Governor Racicot has a distinguished record of public service that spans nearly three decades. He served as Montana’s governor (1993-2001) – winning reelection with 79 percent of the vote in 1996, the largest winning percentage for a governor in Montana’s history and the largest winning percentage for any governor that year.

As governor, Racicot sought to improve government efficiency and bring government services closer to its owners, the people. He favored reducing government wherever possible and eliminated two executive departments. He worked with Montana’s legislature to eliminate a $200 million deficit in 1993 and helped to produce a $22.4 million budget surplus in 1995. The governor's office staff was reduced to approximately half of the 1977 levels. While reducing the size of government, Racicot was also able to more than double the proportion of women appointed to office in Montana, increasing the proportion from 20 to 41 percent.

Prior to being elected governor of Montana, Racicot served as a prosecutor in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the Army (1973-1976), as deputy county attorney for Missoula County (1976-1977), as assistant attorney general and special prosecutor for the state of Montana (1977-1988) and as attorney general (1988-1992).

Throughout his career, Racicot has strongly committed himself to children and community issues.  He is a current member of the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service and Jobs for America's Graduates.  He has also served on the Board of the United Way of America and as chairman of America's Promise--The Alliance for Youth, where his predecessor was Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Racicot earned a bachelor’s of arts in English from Carroll College and a juris doctorate from the University of Montana Law School in Missoula.

Racicot performed brilliantly during the attempted hijacking of the Florida election by Gore; he was powerful, articulate and effective. But, I must agree: he appears to have gone into hiding. A major disappointment in that office.

He needs to be replaced ASAP. If Racicot really wanted to help the GOP, he should've taken Max Baucus out of the Senate this year.

Paging Newt Gingrich...;-)

I'm not gonna get into the "good Chairman/bad chairman" wars, but there is one overriding fact of life to take into account. We've got the White House. That means GWB is the face of the GOP.

Haley Barbour was great on tv, which was a godsend for the Party, but the real reason he was ubiquitous was that in '93 and '94, the dems controlled everything. The Party Chairman becomes top dog only when you ain't got elected top dogs as go-to guys. Haley became much less visible in '95 and '96 because we took Congress and Gingrich and Dole became the spokesmen. Jim Nicholson was an effective Chairman too (though not Haley's equal on tv -- few are), but he was always in the background behind the congressional leaders. Similarly, only the political junkies knew who the DNC Chairman was when Clinton was in the White House.

Racicot is a good guy, but he's also a puppet on a string. Comes with the territory. Under the circumstances, his job is to raise money and otherwise stick to his White House talking points.

Funny, I saw him on Sean Hannity's show just the other night. A good question to ask is if he has declined to appear on talk shows, or if he hasn't been invited. As I am sure you know, the head of the RNC cannot demand air time on Meet the Press.

Now, since we have seen McAuliffe on several shows by himself, and since the hosts have NEVER said "The GOP Chairman declined to appear," I must conclude that they are following the same strategy as with their invitations to members of the House and Senate. They only invite the ineffective speakers and McCain.

I would like to see Racicot on the air more, but I think it is going to be hard to accomplish unless we run our own info-mercials.

Well, of course he is! Remember, Republicans see spinelessness as the defining characteristic of their party.

You have a very good point as to who is the face of the Repub. party. However, the Repub. party needs to grow a little attitude towards the Dems. The Dems will hit us conservatives below the belt every time, we need face men that will nail the Liberals in the double speak that they engage in, kinda like R. Limbaugh does.

Be fair to Racicot, he was excellent during the whole Sore Loserman debacle. He just apparently expended all his energy during that time and hasn't been heard from since.

Regards, Ivan

You want the skeletons to come out of his closet? Keep him in check. And besides this "Two-Party Cartel" doesn't function as well when each are opposed. He also was ask to run for gov & refused because he "didn't have the fire". So they gave him this job. Bob Dole would be proud.

When a party holds the presidency, the president does the talking for the party. When it doesn't, the head of the national committee does the talking for the party. Barbour talked for Republicans when Clinton was president. McAuliffe talks for Democrats when Bush is president.

To get your wish for Racicot to be all over TV, you are going to have to elect Al Gore in 2004.

The RNC website is www.rnc.org

By the way, Haley Barbour hasn't been chairman since 1996. Since then there has been Jim Nicholson, Jim Gilmore, and now Marc Racicot.
