Although I agree heartily that we must get a handle on the ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION problem and need to slow LEGAL IMMIGRATION until we can absorb the recent immigrants into our Culture and our way of life, foreign-born Americans are not nearly the problem that native-born Lib'rals are, IMHO.

Ma'am, I'm sorry to hear yer life experiences with recent immigrants has been so universally displeasing to you. FWIW, I've met many new Americans here in Virginia and the lion's share of them are polite, hard-working folks who love their children and feel blessed to have gotten the opportunity to participate in the Great American Experiment.

Or even better: In English, mention to your companion that they sound like terrorists planning another attack against America, and to keep an eye on them while you call the tip in. If they don't understand English, no problem, they'll get to deal with La migra in due time. And if they leave the area in a great hurry, you may have found some real suspects. Call in the description of the vehicle in which they've left and its license plate number, and report them as possible drunk drivers. That'll likely get a quicker response from most donut munchers than a certain spotting of terrorists with weapons and explosives.
I deal with this all the time and I just get furious. While I am really not able to say anything directly as in most of these cases I am at work and it would be considered inappropriate, I do give them some looks. This country is being overrun with immigrants and illegals and apart from Rep.Tancredo, it seems that congress just can't be bothered with it. The point is, everybody is too afraid to do the politically incorrect thing and do anything that might offend anybody, never mind that we are offended every day by these people being in our face and inescapable, and the language is a biggie. I don't know about you, but I have an entirely different reaction to English speaking Mexicans than I do to Spanish speaking ones.

I think it is evident that they have no respect for this country. Many, if not most, broke our laws to get here. Many of those continue to break our laws once they arrive. They have no desire to assimilate into our culture. They form little pockets of population that retain their own culture and in most places where I have spent a lot of time, their neighborhoods are dirty and unpleasant, a far cry from the good, hard-working, family-oriented people that we are constantly hearing about. While I know that there are some like that, most of my first-hand experience has proven the opposite.
I think a better approach is to learn Spanish yourself. For one it's quite easy to learn, it makes travelling in Mexico or Latin America much more fun. It really helps dealing with this kind of co-worker who does this. You never have to let on that you know every word they're saying, they will assume you don't. You never have to speak Spanish if you don't with to ---especially in this country and they should be encouraged to learn English.
I hardly think it is eavesdropping when you can't hear yourself think for their babbling. And more and more often, regular Americans, you know, the ones who speak the language, have to put up with foreigners with every accent imaginable to do business. If they have no command of the language then they need to do jobs in which they have no need to interact, if they are even here legally, and if they're not, they should be sent back where they came from. It is supposed to be a free country after all. Nobody is preventing them from learning English. And nobody should be forcing Americans to deal with their language. This has to be the only country on earth that sells out its own citizens to accommodate everybody else.

If they have no command of the language then they need to do jobs in which they have no need to interact, if they are even here legally, and if they're not, they should be sent back where they came from.

For official paperwork: agreed. If a business owner wants to capture more business from non-English speakers, or those who have limited proficiency in English, that's THEIR business, not yours.

When it is people that I have no choice but to deal with then it IS my business. I'm not talking about small independent businesses. I'm talking computer tech support, the phone company, and others that you have no control over when you have to deal with them.
I realize that many, if not most immigrants who come here legally do not speak the language when they arrive. In the old days, some of the elders never did, but it once was a requirement for citizenship and should continue to be. I have far more respect for those who make the effort to learn the language, not just the minimum required to ask for government handouts, although I don't think that is even needed any more. The taxpayers will now provide interpreters for them. But that aside, I have seen those who really wanted to improve their lives and they realized that the way to go about it was to master the language.
I am willing to concede that perhaps in some cases my perception may be inaccurate, but my reaction to those who are all over the place blabbering in Spanish is one of contempt because I interpret it, rightly or wrongly, as a sign of blatant disrespect for the country they live in, in many cases having thumbed their noses at our laws to be here in the first place. I am not talking of isolated incidents. This is pretty much a daily occurence if I leave the house. These people are not tourists. That is entirely different. They are people who live here and benefit, often at taxpayer expense, by services that Americans often do not have access to. In many cases they have an attitude of disrespect as well. I have problems with that and I feel no need to apologize for it.
Of course any one that thinks this is living in complete ignorance of American history. How is it that all the big cities in America developed these enclaves with names like: Little Italy, Chinatown, Little Havana, etc. The simple fact is the first generation of imigrants, since the original colonists that didn't mingle with the native population, have ALWAYS clustered together with their own kind. It's pretty scary being in a new country with new traditions a new language and all the other new things. It's much easier for people to phase into the new country (usually in generations) by clustering together and slowly spreading out. That's how it's worked since day one, that seems to be how it's always gonna work. Anybody thinking that this is a new development is a fool.
