Every summer for the past 25 years, New Zealand native Maggie Anderson and her American husband have visited their family in Portola Valley.
But never before had her visit begun in handcuffs and humiliation.
Upon landing at Los Angeles International Airport at 11 a.m on July 24, Anderson -- a former flight attendant who had flown in and out of U.S. airports hundreds of times -- was questioned and arrested by federal immigration agents.

Many of these minimun-wage paid yahoos just like harassing people, particularly white. Just look, when have you seen a person of any other color so harrassed, including middle easterners?
Willie, you're an honest man. What is your opinion?
Help! I fell down laughing and can't get up!
For the most part - low IQ, low wage, suddenly give great power over people many probably hate (older, successful, white or whaever race they have a beef with, etc.). I even seen younger (and sometimes older) male security screeners take extra time scrutinizing the documents papers of attractive young ladies. Security, (and common sense) it sometimes seems is, secondary.
Power is where the attitude comes from, pure and simple.
There is a precedent, from only 80 years ago. It happened there, it can happen here.
But I thought "Federalizing" airport security was going to fix everything - hmmmm.
You're absolutely right. Until our trustworthy government has us completely protected, we can't step out of our houses! No more vacations! No more hassles! The tourism industry will flourish! Best of all, we get to get those filthy foreigners out of this blessed country! Glory be!
``We have been the subject of very harsh criticism since 9-11,'' said Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for the INS Western region. ``All our employees understand we cannot afford to make any mistakes now, and everybody is very, very vigilant. The stakes in this climate are very high.''
For the first half of this year, the INS has denied 7,422 individuals admission into the country by air. That compares with 9,130 people denied entry over the same period in 2000. But as a percentage of all travelers who are entering, or returning to, the U.S. from another country, the percentage of denied admissions has remained at .02 percent.
This born and bred American wants to know how many Saudis have received this treatment, Ms. Kice, and how many have quietly entered the USA since their countrymen massacred 3000 of our countrymen, and destroyed the World Trade Center.
I guess I'll get flamed for saying this, but I hold President Bush personally responsible for this BS. I wish I believed he had a clue about who our enemies are and who our enemies are not. (I'll give him a clue: 51 year-old women from New Zeeland are not the problem, and everytime we spend time paying attention to them, some dirt-eating bastard with a towel on his head walks by to assist in our destruction.)

,,, that's an interesting comment in the light that if New Zealand didn't participate in the war on terrorism, which we are, we'd be "against you". As we have our SAS engaged in this effort, I presume we can call ourselves allies. Should we feel like we're doing the right thing if this is the sort of comment we get from people like you, let alone iron curtain treatment from government approved "Dr Jellyfingers" at LAX is resultant?
I think most of these "security" positions are low-wage, highly repetitive and monotonous, and filled by minimally qualified people. While many may be minorities who "have a chip on their shoulder" for whatever reason, I would not generalize that as a major problem. You come across individuals like that in all walks of life, and all socio-economic classes. IMHO, its simply a matter of humdrum, boring, low-skilled incompetence, regardless of their ethnic background.
She's married to an American yet stays a New Zealander by choice, so she pays the price when she chose to overstay her visa.
