Senator Kennedy Submits Bill to Enhance U.S.-Muslim Understanding
S. 2505 to boost funding for educational, cultural programs

Senator Ted Kennedy (Democrat of Massachusetts) introduced legislation into the Senate May 10 that would increase funding for a broad array of exchange programs to build better understanding between the United States and the Muslim world.

Kennedy, along with a bipartisan coalition of senators, submitted S. 2505, and the bill was referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

According to Kennedy, the proposed bill, the Cultural Bridges Act of 2002, "would authorize $75 million above current appropriations in fiscal years 2003 through 2007 to expand the activities of the State Department's existing educational and cultural programs in the Islamic world."

S. 2505, he continued, would also authorize "$20 million in fiscal years 2003 through 2007 for the Department of State to establish a new high school student exchange program to enable a small number of competitively selected students from the Islamic world to study in the United States at a public high school for an academic year."

Citing what it termed an "under-representation" of participants from Muslim nations in exchange programs, the high school exchange program would allow for Muslim high school students to attend a public secondary school in the United States, live with an American host family and experience life in a United States host community, and "participate in activities designed to promote a greater understanding of American and Islamic values and culture."

Senator Richard Lugar (Republican of Indiana), one of the bill's co-sponsors, told fellow lawmakers that the Bush administration has reviewed S. 2505 and "indicated that they would support its passage, pending the allocation of necessary resources."

Lugar called for swift passage of the proposed legislation.

Following are the texts of S. 2505 and introductory speeches by Senators Kennedy and Lugar from the Congressional Record:

It sounds good, but it will simply provide a free ride for the sons of wealthy sheiks, hetmen, mullahs and other potential enemies who could afford the program anyway. Such a program would be much more meaningful if directed to Latin America and this hemisphere.

What do you expect from a bunch of fools that we elected. Has this thing past? If not, why don't we start calling and stop bitching?

If my President deems this good I will have a barf attack!

Forget the barf attack and act. I am printing up the whole bill and sending to both my Senators with a note attached stating this thing is CRAP and I hope they have the good sense if they are on the Foreign Relations Committe to vote against it. I am really fed up with these people - their arrogance and the whole 9 yards.

In a drunken stupor, Senator Kennedy Submits Bill to ban all drunk bastards from the senate, later realised that he was in fact a drunk bastard himself...

One of my favorite all time groups is the Judds. I would like to apologize to them for the parody I'm about to post. The lyrics just started coming into my head as I read the posts on this thread. So with apologies to the Judd's signature anthem "Love can Build a Bridge.":

"He'd gladly walk across the beaches
with his pants around his feet
or take from you the Dove Bars that you had brought to eat
He claimed to swim out to save her
but his story don't hold true
When people say that leftists care
let me tell you what they do

Ted can't drive a bridge
Reeked of beer and wine
Ted can't drive a bridge
He should have done hard time
He should have done hard time

When he drowned Kopechne
in that midnight hour
He did call anyone
Anyone!
who could help him keep his power!

Ted can't drive a bridge
strayed outside the line
Ted can't drive a bridge
He should have done hard time
He should have done hard time

Why Massachusetts continues to elect this lying, murderous, gluttonous drunk to represent them is beyond me...

Teddy-Boy's VIP seats in Hades can only be front row center just behind Hillary and Bubba.

Cause we definitely want more Muslims to come here (sarcasm)

would authorize $75 million

I've been waiting to use this Whitewater line on a Democrat for a while:

"Just think how many nurses and schoolteachers and policeman we could hire with that money. Just think how many little chillun could be provided with health care. Just think how many warm nutritious meals could be provided to the homeless with 75 million dollars..."
