MASSACHUSETTS SMOKERS' CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STATE ECONOMY-2001

Massachusetts smokers comprise only 20% of the adult population in the state. Here is what they already pay because they choose to buy a legal product:

Massachusetts smoker payments in 2001 were more than nine times larger than state revenues from excise taxes on alcoholic beverages ($64 million).

2001 Massachusetts smoker payments could supply all the funds that the governor is budgeting for FY2002-2006 capital spending on:

University of Massachusetts’ facilities – all campuses ($247 million)
Public safety and correctional facilities ($180 million) Public housing ($507 million)
Information technology ($501 million).

Massachusetts 2001 smoker payments would also supply enough dollars to support FY2002 spending on:

Sheriffs statewide ($193.2 million)
Local aid for public school construction through the School Building Assistance program ($375 million).

In 1997, smokers supported 9,739 jobs that paid an additional $17,557,097 in state and local personal income and corporate taxes.

Actually, I am in Canada so I doubt you have stats for us...but I'm certain the numbers are comparable.

It used to be governments said they were gouging smokers because smokers weren't paying their socialist 'fair share'. Once that argument died governments wanted to increase the gouging of smokers so they changed they're justification for doing so to they wanted to make smokers quit. The problem with that is anything that is not against the law is supposed to be beyond the reach of governments. Government gouging of smokers is now at such a pathetic state that they have to admit they are social engineering to gouge citizens.
