Which State is the Armpit of America?

Ok fellow freepers. The aristocracy had fun deciding which 'hick town' was the armpit of America. Naturally it had to be rural and conservative. A tad redneck.
They were way off the mark. I would have picked New York prior to 9-11. I mean, good grief. Hellery's husband pardoned bomb terrorists to get her elected, the scandal is exposed to every New Yorker and they elected her anyway? She was silent on the issue for at least a week. But well, perhaps NY had been reborn in blood. So, I'm tempted to give them a pass.
Arkansas? Could that be the armpit of America? The home of NationsBank, Tyson Chicken, Walmart, Web Hubbell, and the Big Creep himself?
Then there is the delightful state of New Jersy, which is batting a thousand at elected scandal-swamped senators. Not only the Torch, but also Corzine.
Some might choose South Dakota. Not only do they keep re-electing Timber Tom [also called Rushmore Daschle], but they also go three days without brushing their teeth. So many choices....

I don't remember eactly how to define median, mean, and mode - so I can't use those terms for a pitness index. And there are probably some decent FR types in each state. Exempting them, and using anecdotal experiences to arrive at a per capita pitness rating, I pick WVA - one of your choices - and Kansas. I used to wonder "How could they keep electing Dole?" Then I spent some time there...

Remember when the 55 freeway had 1 lane each way? Hey remember when Knott Berry Farm was still a farm with a pie stand & chickens on a Beach Blvd that was a 1 lane each way asphalt strip with a dirt shoulder?

Why is it so easy to pick the most beautiful state, and so difficulty to pick the worst?
I've visited about half the states and would choose Kentucky as the most beautiful.
But armpit, that's tough.
Most boring state to drive through? Ohio. (has to have competitors, though, in the west)
Ugliest city? Albany, NY.
Worst traffic? Houston, TX.
Loneliest place? Mountains of West Virginia
Armpit? -Hot, sweaty in the middle of the summer? -- The bayou of Louisiana. Don't try to drive through New Orleans, in July, with no air conditioning, as I once did. Very bad idea.

What excites you about driving through Illinois outside of Chicago? Have you driven through West Texas lately? How about the drive from Tampa to Orlando?

The only I've done is Tampa to Orlando. And you are right, it is boring. But hey, there are lots of farmer's markets. More than can be said of Ohio.
To: glorygirl
only one, that is.

You drove the National Road through Ohio right, now known as I-40 I think? Yup, I thought so.

In case you didn't know, Joe Hadenuf and I are the self appointed defenders fighting the bad rap California gets around here.Gee, I'd never have guessed! ;-)
I could have pointed out a few negative things about Alabama if I wanted to, I suppose, but I take no joy in running down another state.
I could say some things about Alabama as well. As I said in another thread, it is an embarassment that Howell Heflin once represented us in front of the entire nation. I don't take any joy in running down the negative elements of any state's social/political situation. However, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist and is not a problem for the people of that state. You will have to admit though, ever how large a percentage of the population they are, the socialists out in California want to make life miserable for the rest of the state. Also, there is Hollywood, not satisfied with sticking its nose in California state affairs, it has to do it elsewhere (and, by Hollywood, I'm talking about the entertainment industry).
and the fact that the state produced my brother in law.
Well, you can't blame the rest of us for a bad apple.

Whats THIS?? NO ONE picks Louisiana?? You all must be tourists...you come here for two weeks and think its Orleans paradise! But we have had more crooked politicians here than any other state! New Orleans may have good food and Mardi Gras, but try living here and you'll soon find out that we are, at heart and soul, a SOCIALIST state, with the worst public elementary schools in the country!

Hey, Georgia isn't THAT bad !!! My Dad ( U.S. Army Major )was transferred here when I was a kid. We just never left. We live in the Garden of Good and Evil (if you get my drift ). It's nice here, you have your rednecks but you don't have to socialize with them .... lol. I moved here from Dover NJ and boy did we hate to leave that place ... it was so nice in the late 60's. Personally, since South Carolina is right across the river, I have come to just hate that state. Aside from going over to the outlets, I just have no good experiences there. Talk about rednecks !!!!

I remember the time I visited Laverne, Alabama circa around 1970 with long hair, to visit a dear college friend of my mother's. It had both considerable pluses and minuses. To live there would have been hell at that time. Cheers.

I wouldn't want to go to a town/city called Laverne, no matter which state it was in! I can imagine it was bad in 1970. I can remember seeing people's homes, in the mid-70s, that didn't have telephones or indoor toilets. Talk about culture shock!

I nominate Gary, IN for the worst slum/murder armpit of America!
