'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings
A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.
Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.
He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.
The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.
If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.
The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.
He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.
Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.
He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

I recognize Finn from some of the gun rags. Seems I've heard of Col. Young before. What would I know him from?

With 1.4 million homes haveing loaded guns that have no safety devices on them and 40% of them have kids!!
How many of those homes include homes such as mine - where the loaded firearm, sans "safety device on it," is secured away from the children but accessible to the adults?
I think you need to provide cites for your statistics. You are beginning to sound like a shill from HCI/VPC/MMM/Brady Campaign.
The NRA (I hate to admit it) has managed to reduce firearms-related injuries and deaths over the last ten years through EDUCATION AND TRAINING. I have problems with your statistics and want to know where you got them from and how they break down. For instance are the following included in your numbers:
- accidental police shootings?
- accidental discharges by criminals?
- training-related accidens among police, military and civilians?
- accidents associated with moronic behavior? (My term, included are the idiots who forget to empty a firearm before cleaning, accidental discharges during loading of the firearm, etc...)
- legitimate shootings mis-classified as "accidental"?
- criminal shootings used to inflate the statistics?
Understand that your product will NOT have any effect on reducing the above-mentioned types of "accidents"
Also understand that firearms are intended to be dangerous (to the target) when used properly and can be dangerous to the user when used improperly, therefore there is a given amount of danger involved.
Making a firearm as safe as possible can be done in two ways:
1) unload it; or
2 USE IT PROPERLY
The first option makes the firearm useless for it's intended function. The latter is the only true way to make a firearm safer for the user while still being able to make it perform it's intended function.
Your product basically falls under the first option - and it will get people killed. The wrong people.
Get a good insurance policy.

I have no doubt that an under powered bullet will jam a chamber. I just wonder why I (or anyone else) would want to use the product. Just dont keep a round in the chamber, and it wont be fired by "accident".

He was one of the instructors and I thought that I had seen his picture in the background when Cooper was back at Gunsite.
Other than that, I don't know if he has ever written anything.
He was our favorite instructor. He had a sense of humor that you had to be there to believe.

I've heard this story a few times before I don't remember which city the officers were from though.
I heard that one or two cops got killed in a shoot out. When their bodies were recovered it was found that they had 6 spent revolver rounds in one hand. Investigators wondered why this happened. They later found out that when they were at the range after they got done firing six they would have to empty the chamber catching all the empty's in their hand so they could dump them in a bucket.
So in this stressful shootout these cops, or cop, reverted back to his training, catching his empty's and looking for the can to put them in.
They used to teach us "tac-tac" and then drop the weapon down. Now they teach us to fire until the threat is ended. Once in awhile I catch myself doing tac tac and then dropping the muzzle.
One of our guys was on the cover of a street survival book when he shot and killed a guy behind the newspaper here. It was one of the first street survival books that came out.

I don't. I do not believe for one second that he is not an anti-gunner. His whole "for the children" stance gives me that feeling.

"found him with six spent rounds in his hand"
Wasn't that one of the FBI Agents killed in the Miami shoot-out?

Then the lawyers and prosecuters have a field day piling on the cops who shot the dead crook "excessively". You can't win.

Sorry I missed this one.....busy at work. I have a keypad safe next to my bed. As soon as my toddlers reach proper age, they will be taught as I was not to fool with daddy's handguns and they will first get proper instruction and respect for long arms....at about the same age as you suggested. Handgun instruction will come a bit later. I also keep other protection devices in very high places out of their reach....just in case.
The main issue I have with this safety device is that if mistakenly fired in a WTSHTF situation then the weapon is useless....plus I can envison a law whereby this bullet will be required....another backdoor entry into gun confiscation. We also have a big safe/cabinet locked as well which I can open quickly if the situation requires heavy equipment.
Mean Dog and easy access handgun safe close by sounds prudent enough to me.

I don't believe you would need this any way. You are aware that kids are curious and have the safe. Sounds like you have things under controll. Still do some reseach on accidental shooting. Maybe you can come up with a better idea.
The surprising thing is how all these young children get ahold of a gun. First thing they do is pull the trigger. About a month ago a cop was shot dead by his THREE YEAR OLD!! I belive in proper gun education but at three? If you've been reading these posts I have been catching it from every side.
That is eactly what I need to know. When I invented this I tried to think of something that I would want to use and this is it. If the gun is anywhere near your person you don't need this but if you store a gun away put one in the chamber and if anyone pulls the trigger you have just saved a life and 20 years in jail.

This is where the anti gun group come in. If a guy can't remember if his gun is loaded should he even have one? More people have died by accidental shooting than died in Vietnam! Smart ones, dumb ones, old and young alike. This will put a stop to that.
ITs a great idea. If you have something better let me see it.

Cool do I get to shoot back?
Ok Bright boy whats your bright idea?

To: Shooter 2.5
Yes.
Check out the records at the CDC and the FBI and
www.igc.org and there are 100 others.
Then the owner of the gun gets a fine and gets to spend 10 to 20 in jail. Go to any search enging and type in accidental shooting. If that does not wake this crowd up nothing will.

I have done the research now do yours.
Start reading the articles and find a device that will work to stop these needless deaths. Left right what diffeace does that make. I am doing what I can to make guns safer. Many agree with me that this is a great idea. If you have something better lets see it.
You don;t so you slam me. Call me a liar etc. Feel better. I did this for one reason to try and stop accidental shooting. It works. It took three years to figure this out.
I have not hit the abuse button I can take care of myself.
