'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

because of all the screwey laws

That caught my eye, too. But I'm too busy trying to get the answer to what the Million Mom March and The Brady Center thought of his safety bullet when he went to them.

If the cycle the gun they will load the second safety bullet. I realize it may not be the perfect answer but its better than whats out there right now. You say that my idea to save lives is going to kill somebody??

...the best of intentions can get people killed. When you are able to get the answer to the following question, then we will debate the logical conclusions of having two(not one, but two) safety bullets, say one chambered, one in mag.

Answer this question please: At what range do the vast majority of self-defense shootings occur?

"So you just had to do something"....you mean like reinventing the wheel?? Are you sure you've thought this through well? You haven't done much research into dummy or practice, or nonlethal rounds have you? Ever heard of SnapCaps or a company called Pachmayr?

You have not answered ANY of the legitimate questions that I and others have poses to you. Not ONE!

We all wait with amused curiosity to see what some of those answers will be...(smirking)

"You simply don't get it do you. Talk to your wife have her explain it to you or call the NRA they think its a great idea and they can explain it to you. "

Dimwit! I AM THE NRA -- And I get it!

It's just another Ditsey GIMMICK !!

And Just what the H*ell makes you think the Wonda-Safely Bull-it will magically appear in some loser's pistol, JUST in time to save some innocent kid? You haven't GOT Sh*t, You don't know Sh*t, and the Safety-Bullit won't AMOUNT to SH*T !!

You might make a few bucks, though. There's a sucker born every minute . . .

Well Mr Freeper since Sept 4, 2002, I wouldn't say that I exactly "put down" the product you proposed. As a matter of fact, I mentined that there were circumstaces I could imagine where it would be desirable or useful, or something to that effect.

I did say, however, that it didn't personally suit me, and I gave my reasons, and I suggested that there are forseeable product liability issues. Those things just aren't the same as a "put down".

I'll add to my previous remarks that at this point, based on the things you have said here and your way of saying them, that I personally think your prospect for success with this product is doubtful.

You have also said that you are a RKBA supporting NRA member, and that "they" like this thing you have invented.
That's doubtful too.

My beautiful stainless steel Ruger Blackhawk .357 Magnum revolver is the later style that has the hammer block mechanism that helps prevent it from engaging the firing pin unless the trigger is squeezed, thus helping to prevent accidental discharge. No telling how many "children"'s lives have been saved by this design. But do they call it the "Safety Blachawk"? Nope, they don't because it isn't, and you will find freepers here that could give you a list a mile long of precisely why it isn't.
That's how it plays in Peoria, a mixed review. While others don't like it, when I go to fondle my guns, the Blackhawk is the first one I will put my hands on.

If you are currently allowed to post, which is doubtful, you would do well to post a few dozen apologies, and when you are ready to market your invention, I would suggest that you not try to do it yourself, but instead hire an enthusiastic and ethical marketing manager with a proven track record.

Who wants to tell Worley that his bullet has already been invented -- by somebody named "Squib".

"I would appreciate a step by step description how a so-called Glock thumb is even possible while holding a gun in a correct manner. Thank you."

Back off, Shooter.
I'm the one who got his thumb scraped by the slide, and I take full responsibility for that.
I never claimed that I was an expert with a pistol; in fact, what I know about pistols I could stick in my eye and not feel it.
But the last thing we need is for someone like you to come on the thread and start ragging us because we scraped a little skin off our thumbs.
It's not that big of a deal.
Drop it.

You better take a good look at 246.
I tried to handle that little outburst with a little humor and he came back at me because I didn't realize that there were three people in that picture with injuries.
At no time did I introduce him to this thread.

Since you object so much that I'm posting to him, I'll stop. Just tell him that the last post doesn't need an answer. In fact, I'll ask to have it removed.
If you ever decide to post about the M1, you can also leave me out of it so please don't ping me.
Thank you.

That was fast. Thanks again, Moderator.

Well, COB, I hope everything is good in your world.
Just so you know, I don't own a Glock. They're too ugly for my tastes. To each his own.

I hope they never need to use the gun, since being awakened by someone breaking into the house, I doubt that most people would remember to remove that gun-jamming cartridge, and they would then be thoroughly *screwed* as far as self-defense.

Why IS it that people spend so much time (and money) figuring out ways to right things so that they can keep from having to TEACH kids about guns and safe handing, and making parents parent?

My children are old enough now that there's no reason in the world to lie to me, and neither of them EVER got the gun except the one time my daughter needed it because someone was trying to break in. I also know that I never touched my parents' guns, either, until authorized. Now, we try to do everything possible to make them stupid and helpless. Argh!

Tell you what, Mike. You have some guy a lot bigger than you grab you by the hair and drag you, punching you in the face, while you jack that fake round out of the chamber. Or, you arrange with a friend to do a pretend - and very surprise - home invasion (load your gun-jammer bullet and a bunch of empties), and see if your tunnel vision, tunnel hearing, shaking, adrenalin dump, and loss of fine motor coordination let you manage to remember to jack that one out, or if you automatically raise, aim, verify target, and fire.

I've been in that first situation, by the way, and if I had had to jack a round out of the gun, he would have taken it away from me. It's a clever idea, but has no real life application. I keep and carry my firearms for self-defense, not game and giggles.

I think, by the way, that getting insulting to other people on here is pretty obnoxious and self-serving. If you can't take criticism, you should probably get out of the inventing business.

Be Safe, Know What You're Doing and Do It Right.
