'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

'Safety bullet' invention aims to prevent accidental shootings

A Florida man claims to have designed a safety bullet which locks up a gun when it's accidentally fired.

Mike Worley says his simple invention takes gun safety to another level.

He came up with the idea after a local boy was shot in his elbow while showing off his dad's .357 Magnum.

The safety bullet can be hidden in the gun chamber and ejected quickly if the owner needs to fire a live bullet.

If the safety bullet is fired, it jams the chamber and locks the gun until the shell is removed with a special tool.

The News Herald reports Mr Worley has applied for a patent for his invention.

He says several companies are interested in his design, and one has started making a prototype.

Mr Worley, from Panama City, says he supports the use of guns and understands why people need a loaded gun as protection.

He said: "I think the safety bullet is a step in the right direction. I don't want fame and fortune. This is a simple device that takes safety to the next level."

A "safety device" (which will jam the gun) that is hidden inside the chamber is worse than useless to me. It's dangerous.

Any "safety lock" needs to be on the outside and highly obvious so that if awakened at 0300 by crashing glass or a club to the head, one will at least know what he needs to do to get the gun he loaded 3 months ago ready.

A "disabling bullet" hidden in the chamber (3 months ago) is going to be forgotten in the heat and stress and fear and ringing in the ears environement of sudden life or death combat. Then it will get the defender killed.

Step by step, we are coming to the day when every gun will have to at all times be "disabled" with an "approved" safety device while locked in an "approved" safe, with the govt retaining the right to "inspect" all "private arsenals" (two guns or more, 100 rounds of ammo or more.)

That's the other reason I hate these "safety" gadgets, when what is needed is to firmly teach every 8 year old and older to treat ALL guns as cocked and loaded at ALL TIMES, while keeping them safely away from smaller kids.

I think I read about this "invention" a few weeks/two months ago.

I like the qoute from the Delta operator in Mogadishu. "This (his index finger) is my safety"

Great idea,

Go to Yahoo type in accidental shooting. Can you tell me why there are 60,000 stories of accidental shooting. Plus it happens to everyone not just the stupid people but cops, mititary hell even a few NRA guys have accidentally discharged their weapons.

I had to do something so I invented this. It was a lot harder to invent something like this than to bitch about it.

So whats your contribution?

I can take the shots but I also know how to dish them out. If anyone wants to go toe to toe with me when I am fighting for an idea that will save thousands of lives let them. I will fight for what I believe in and I believe that my savety bullet will save a lot of Fathers and Mothers and Sons and Daughters.

I have been getting hammered by a lot of people here that to me just don't understand what this is all about. If they can't take the slam they should not fire the first round.

Some of these people would probebly go in the woods and kick a bear in the butt and then be shocked when they are run down and eaten. I would pay real money to watch.

Give me your best shot! I don't turn my check I will return the favor.

I am on your side. I will fight that every step of the way. The only thing I want to do is to stop people from being harmmed by accidental shooting. I am pro gun and am working with the NRA on this. They have a mighty big hammer to fight legislation like that. Still if you hear of any movement like that let me know and I will do my best to stop it. The last think I want to see is someone else telling me I have to do something. you can reach me directly at.

You have your opinion a lot of people don;t agree with you.

The are going to come two in a pack for that reason. If the cycle the gun they will load the second safety bullet.
I realize it may not be the perfect answer but its better than whats out there right now.

You say that my idea to save lives is going to kill somebody?? I guess the truck carring them COULD run someone over.

OK,

Start reading some stories on accidental shooting. Take a look at each one and how they happen. Its either a kid who doesn't know any better or someone who said they did not know the gun was loaded. Most everyone here knows their way around a firearm and are not likely to be involved in an accidental shooting. Just like they all probebly never had a car accident. People other than the owner of the gun gets in and fires it and kills someone. SOmetimes their sister, or father, or a friend wind up dead because they don't know guns but you do. It was your gun that did this. Guess what you get to attend a funeral then you get to go to jail for 10 to 20 for involuntary manslaughter.

Thank you for your feedback,

Your saying that I should lie down and let myself be kicked. When Hitler decided he could walk on the world he went at it. It took the entire world to fight this guy and put him in its place. My father and Uncles fought in world war two. I have many friends who died in Vientnam for something they believed in.

I believe in this and I will fight for it as long and as hard as I can. It will save lives. If you think I am going to let someone give it a shot without answering back you have no idea what this country is about. We all fight for our rights every day and will continue to do so. I guess when those planes killed all those people on 911 you would have said we should not go after them. Wrong!

I have invented an idea that will save thousands of lives and brother I will wage war with anyone to get it out there.
AS far as managing my own business. I have done so for 30 years and I will bet I can buy and sell you 10 times over. Business is not for the timid. You want something go get it.

I want to make your gun safe. You saying my insults have caused you not to want to by my product. Thats your decision and I can not controll that. But don't kick me and expect me to lay there and take it.

Teacher,

These are the guys who are dishing out insults like a 5th grader!! YA!!

The reason people don;t know the entire storey is because they have not been given the entire storey. The news clipping I read was about 20 sentences. The patent application is 18 pages. It is involved. People that know guns think its one awsome idea.

If I walked up to you in the street and punched you in the face I guess you would just stand there and take it?!

I am happy for you and all your friends and how much they know. Its great. Know this this is going to be on the market. It is going to save thousands of lives and it will be the greatest lifesaving device ever made for a gun.

Mike, this is just stupid. I'm sure you will be a hit with the Brady bunch because they love stupid ideas.

As for me and mine, we will stick with safe gun handling. Why would I pay good money for something designed to screw up my gun?
