J O H A N N E S B U R G, July 30 — A week-old baby girl has been raped in South Africa, police said today, making her the youngest victim in a spate of child rapes fueled by the myth that sex with a virgin cures AIDS.
Superintendent Lawrence Zondi told Reuters by telephone that police were investigating Sunday's attack at Kwaminya in KwaZulu-Natal province. "A week-old child has been raped by an unknown person. She is seriously injured but her condition is stable," he said.
On Friday, a South African man was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a nine-month-old baby in an attack that outraged a country known for high levels of violent crime.
Passing sentence on 23-year-old David Potse, Judge Hennie Lacock said the rape of the baby — identified only by the nickname Tshepang, meaning "Have Hope" — was the most gruesome example of a human rights violation that he had come across.
Lacock said he would have imposed the death penalty without hesitation had South Africa not abolished capital punishment.
Tshepang survived October's attack but had reconstructive surgery to repair her genitals and internal organs.
Horrendous Myth
Some 21,000 cases of child rape were reported to South African police last year. Experts say some of the culprits are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus and believe — as elsewhere in Africa — that sex with a young virgin will cure them.
Today, Superintendent Zondi said the baby's mother, whom he did not name, saw blood on the child's diaper when she changed it on Sunday evening and found bruises on her genitals.
"I am speechless and horrified," said Kelly Hatfield, who heads a group opposing violence against women in South Africa.
"Rape is about power and control but how much more powerful can you be over something so little and vulnerable? It shows lack of self-esteem, depression, depravity and perversion," she told Reuters.

They didn't believe abstinence, or condom use, would prevent HIV/AIDS, but believe sex with a virgin will cure it. Yea, I really want my tax dollars sent to Africa. We send them aid so they can breed more AIDS.

The men , who rape babies and tiny children, in South African, do so, because , even though the Afrikaners tried to educate and yes, " civilize " these people, it just didn't " take " , with many. The ANC is SO racist ( not to mention MARXIST ), that they have declined FREE HIV/AIDS medicines from Western countries and up until recently, did NOT bother, at all, to even look for, let alone prosecute those who raped children. Heck, it was just more votes for them. No one should expect that man, who was just sentenced to life in prison, to be stuck in jail for his entire life. That is NOT the way things work over there ; not now, anyway.
I don’t have anything handy, Jeff, but a quick Google search will easily lead to a plethora of unbelievable comments made by Thabo Mbeki and the other ANC merry pranksters concerning AIDS (Including the “discovery” that HIV in no way leads to AIDS).

I am just attempting to explain to you, and others, that you are viewing this through a cultural prism, that more than three centuries of exposure to Western Civilization has NOT managed to get through to them, on any significat level.
Again, you can't use a dictionary , meant for AMERICAN consumption, to describe what another set of people believe. What is bad / wrong / immoral / " evil " to us ( and yes, to many South Africans, as well ), when those people do NOT percieive it thusly, is the rub. Only ONE man , who committed baby rape, ONE in tens of thousands , in one year, has been caught, tried, and sentenced . And, if, for one moment, you imagine that he will serve his entire life term, you don't know a thing about the horrific state, that the ANC has allowed ( nay, encouraged ! )there.
You bet that " SOME " South Africans have morals and values, that are the same as ours. The problem is, that they are no longer in power . You think that slimey COMMIES,and their followers,who are also one step away from being savages, have morals and vakues, that are recognizable, to a Western mind ?
How does one " teach " people , who don't think as we do, " our " sort of morals and values and make them stick ? I doubt that anyone can answer that query. After all, Christian morals and values have been taught ( attempted to be taught ) to these people, for close to 350 years. Obviously, it didn't take with some. It hasn't taken, with some, in all Western societies; however, that's a rather different subject and one that doesn't really " fit " these circumstances.
I can try to explain this, until I am blue in the face. What you have to stop doing, is to see the people, who commit these acts, as the same as you or me or anyone else that you may know. They aren't ! THEY GO TO WITCH DOCTORS AND BELIEVE IN THEIR CURATIVE POWERS, EVEN THOUGH THEY DON'T WORK.
To the group of people, who engage in this disgusting behavior, this IS the norm, the mores ! Yes, they've been " educated ". Yes, they are slightly civilized. NO, they are NOT like anyone, whom you've ever met, know, or imagine you know.
Here's a tiny history lesson for you. There are many tribes, which have long composed the black populace of South Africa. The most " civilized " were/ are the Zulus. The Xhosa, who make up most of the ANC power structure and base, were once the slaves of the Zulus, and are NOT indiginous to the region. There are many, many, MANY other tribes, as well as legal and ILLEGAL black immigrants, from various other African nations. They are NOT all the same. even though they are the same race ; their cultures are as different, as ours is from most of their's
You find WHAT " amusing " , dear ? My choice of words ? Well, try this on for size, then. When Christianty was trying to win converts, it adopted pagan holidays , as its own, made saints out of local gods and goddesses, as well as making local " holy places " into Christian " holy places ". In some places, for some peoples, it took far longer than 300 + years for Christianty and Christian doctrine / morals / values to " take ". In places such as South America and Hatti and Puerto Rico, they still haven't really " taken ".
If the president of their country tells them, that the " white man's medicine " can NOT / will NOT cure them of HIV/AIDS , and they should turn away from that...and they go to a witch doctor ( for want of a better word, that you'll understand ) , and that witch doctor tells them that sexual intercourse, with a " pure " , untainted virgin, is ALL that will " cure " them, then, just how " easy " is it, dear, for their " white " taught morals, to kick in ? This has NOTHING to do with their " not paying attention ", nor any of the rest of the things that you wrote. GOT THAT ?
Why, on earth, would fellow prisioners, who believe exactly , what the ONE MAN, out of thousands, who committed this vile act, and was sent to prison ( prisons there, BTW, leak like a seive ! ), give him a hard time ? W-H-Y ? It's what would happen here. It is NOT necessarily what will happen over there.
