ITHACA -- In most places, youngsters spend their summers camping, or at the mountains or the beach. In Ithaca, they learn how to become social activists.
Sixteen young people, ages 12 to 21, turned up at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center Tuesday night for the third in a series of Youth Action Workshops, "Social Change through the Arts," sponsored by Cornell University's Center for Religion, Ethics and Social Policy.

The idea for the Youth Action workshops came to Sidle and Ley when they were attending puppet camp in Washington, D.C. Now I know where I went wrong. I never went to puppet camp as a child and I never sent my children there when they were younger. Oh my!

"And Matthias Dean-Carpentier, 13, said he liked the idea of being able to make himself heard. He's in Ithaca for the summer, visiting his mother, he said. During the school year, he attends the Paideia School in Atlanta, Ga."Well, I guess his father is going to have to de-program him when he gets back to Georgia.

Well, I guess his father is going to have to de-program him when he gets back to Georgia. The kid has a hyphenated last name. Do you really think a father that allows that is going to be against this?
Heck, we may have found the next Taliban John Walker here.

Those puppets again. I repeat my statement of yesterday, now known as the Marple Index:
The obnoxiousness of a program is directly correlatable to the number of giant puppets present.
And it goes without saying that "puppet camp" has a Marple Index of infinity.
Bah! Puppets are nothing but trouble brewing.

Marcie Ley, another workshop leader and a member of Cornell's Committee on United States-Latin American Relations (CUSLAR), pointed out that the fish puppets, used in the Ithaca Festival Parade, got across the idea visually, that many small fish could organize effectively into a fish as large as the shark, meant to represent large corporations. Yeah, you could have grown up into THIS:

Why are those puppets ALWAYS scary looking?
There is something seriously wrong with these people.

Interesting post. It's too bad we don't have access to someone who could provide similar training. Street theatre could be a powerful tactic against liberals.
I recall some of the tales of FReepers who have used similar tactics, for example the classic "police" command to clintoon to "back away from the intern, and come out with your pants up." Those tactics could be useful...

Not all puppets are evil....
I'm quite found of Lamb Chop...and Beaney & Cecil started as a puppet show...

Though the person with the hypenated name in this case is a male, it is a rule of life, that if followed will pay off large dividends...
Never Trust A Women With A Hypenated Name

Lamb Chop is by far the most evil of all puppets. Lamb Chop is the leader of the "Puppet School of Mayhem" and advises on several other puppet boards.

The kid has a hyphenated last name. Do you really think a father that allows that is going to be against this? Out of curiosity, I looked up the "Paideia School" on the web, where the hyphenated boy goes, and their "Framework of Values" suggests to me that Dad's just fine with how his son is spending his summers. The Paideia School sounds like a little piece of Ithaca, right there in Atlanta...

All hail our evil leader Lamb Chop!!!!

I read about the puppet camp, and I immediately thought of the Marple Index. ;)
It says something about how indoctrinated this kid is that at the age of 13, he's talking about how much fun social justice workshops are, in a Stepford child-like sort of way. I don't know about most people, but when I was 13, I spent my summer alternating between riding my bike with my friends, fishing, shooting at things, and trying to figure out a way to get the girl who lived three houses down to notice me.
And anyone that had suggested puppet camp to me...I don't know how I would have reacted, but I don't think puppet camp would have interested me. Not without a lobotomy first, but then again, I didn't get that crap pushed on me from birth like this poor kid probably did.

I believe that is the military cemetery in Hawaii, I think in what is called the Punchbowl. These are Pearl Harbor and Pacific casualties.
